This tracker that I previously linked still seems to be my go-to as it doesn't just give a tally state by state but actual town by town statistics. Zoom in and click on the dots

Right now I am starting to wonder about the economy from all the people staying home and not earning a paycheck. The numbers tossed around as a stimulus won't last that long since even if it's $2 trillion that is about half of the taxes collected in a year. That doesn't really seem like that much when you really think about it and might cover like a single month for everyone. The real problem will be that places that stay open are relying on other people having money to spend and that is going to quickly dry up as people start to rely on unemployment until they get a government bailout check in hand which could take a while since it would need to be passed by congress, signed by the president and then processed and mailed out.

Tuesday, Gov. Cuomo announced 432 new cases of COVID-19 in New York, bringing the state total to more than 1,300 with 12 deaths related to the virus. New York remains the No. 1 state in the country in terms of confirmed cases.

It's now just one day later and NY is at 2,481 cases for the state and 16 dead. Most are concentrated in NYC.

Only 4 days later and New York is at 15,777 confirmed infected with the virus and 114 dead, the majority right here in NYC. The US total is over 32,000 infected and 401 dead. At this rate it's only a matter of days before the US hits 6 figures, and maybe just NY alone.

I get it. Corona virus is dangerous and scary. Many US people are idiots and won't stay away from others.

But anyone else concerned that all these shutdowns and shelter in place orders are setting a dangerous precident? Governments rarely relinquish power once they have it.

In the US, multiple states now have recent uncontested precident to shut down nearly everything in the name of anything they can construe as a public health emergency.

I can't imagine the anxiety anyone in the service industry is feeling right now. I'm lucky to have a job that is considered essential. Barring some seriously apocalyptic stuff I'm covered. But waiters, hotel person's etc. The bills alone are one thing but now, the idea that going forward your state can just say. Nope you and your entire industry is closed. Go home. All without a vote from the people or even your representatives. That's utterly terrifying.

Imagine if States decided to act on the notes Scientists have made regarding pollution clearing in just this short time. They now have the means to shut everything down for weeks in the name of the public health emergency known as climate change. California could close everything on a heavy smog day until it clears. States could shut things down for a month once a year. All they have to do is declare a public health emergency. Heck they could just keep a single public health emergency open the way the federal government keeps multiple state of emergency declarations open for decades. Then they can close stuff willy nilly cause the emergency is already perpetually in effect.

Just in general, yes. I am wondering about the new cases being reported, ect. If accurate it's encouraging. This is a time to try and help each other. Follow the health recommendations. Stay safe all. I see what they are giving our health care workers for "mask's". I'm not sure it's better than nothing. My wife is a RN, trying to buy her a decent/better mask.

Did you guys see the AZ guy that stole 29 Covid-19 test kits? Disguised himself as a delivery driver. Might be able to sell them at a crazy price no doubt. Can't get them tested or developed, has to be a lab. I hope he chokes on them.

If left to the people to do what is right on their own to stop the spread of this virus, half the country would end up dead. The fact that they are having to enforce restrictions is because some idiots won't act responsibly on their own recognizance, as we have seen up to now.  This is a serious infectious disease with no treatment and no vaccine. This isn't a smog day. Drastic situations call for drastic measures. They will not use it for any reason 'willy nilly' as you say in your angst-ridden post, otherwise this sort of thing would have been instituted years ago. Please remove your tin foil hat and stop adding completely unhelpful and unnecessary rhetoric to the panic that is already out there, and maybe stay away from the sort of websites who are spreading this sort of fear-mongering. As it turns out, many of them are from overseas actors who are intentionally trying to sow unrest in the midst of this emergency, so stop helping them please.

They say to go out and exercise, walk the dog, go for a hike.
Not to go out and hug and kiss everyone you see as you're running down the road.
It it really that hard a concept to grasp?

Yeah what an asshat - nobody can use them afaik as they have to go to a lab to process, so the idiot achieved nothing but to deplete the supply. Hope they catch him and make him lick the floors clean in a hospital ward with virus victims in it.

The next week is gonna be a mess. It's going to get worse before it gets better. Bear in mind everything done has at the very least a 2 week time delay. We're beginning to see right now what was not done in time 2+ weeks ago.

+1 I feel for all in the medical field, patients, civil servants. The economy maybe on life support shortly.

One good thing happened. Harbour Freight is donating all their masks and PPE to hospitals: Got this in a E-mail

Dear Harbor Freight Community,
As we’ve been following the news over the last few days, we’ve heard about the severe shortage of protective gear for hospitals, healthcare workers and first responders as the impact of COVID-19 is being felt across the country.  America depends on these heroes every day and in the days ahead we will depend on them even more. At Harbor Freight, we want them to know that they can depend on us too.
So we’ve decided to donate our entire supply of the personal protective equipment items listed below to front line hospitals with 24 hour emergency rooms in the communities served by our stores.
                   •   N95 Masks
            •    Face Shields
            •    5 and 7 mil Nitrile Gloves
If you work at a hospital with a 24 hour emergency room in need of these items, please ask the office in charge of procurement at your hospital to click  here so they can provide us with the information we’ll need to determine if we can make a donation.  If you’re not with a hospital, but would like to give us the name of a hospital with a 24 hour emergency room in your community that might need our help, please email us at hospitalhelp@harborfreight.com, identify the hospital’s city and state in the subject line, and our team will follow-up.
PLEASE DO NOT MAKE REQUESTS AT YOUR LOCAL STORE OR OUR CALL CENTER AND PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT HOSPITALS—THEY’RE BUSY HELPING THEIR PATIENTS.
For hospitals we’re able to help, we’ll email them a voucher when the supplies are available for pick up at their local Harbor Freight Tools store.
Although we certainly won’t have enough of these supplies to fill everyone’s needs, we’re going to donate everything we’ve got. We also recognize that there are so many other critically important people responding to this crisis and that there is need everywhere. We’ve chosen to focus our efforts on hospitals with a 24 hour emergency room with the hope that we can help as many people as possible right now.
Thank you and God Bless,
                         Eric Smidt
                         Owner and Founder

Sad part is, this guy's life will get destroyed now over a error/mistake.

Wow, thank you for posting that, an honest mistake. I hope the media edit the original story too. Now I feel sorry for the guy. Damn. Shows how wrong the media can be, and how ready we are to believe whatever they publish. Amazed the company didn't know better - or maybe it was the media making a story up... wouldn't be the first time. I apologize for calling the guy an asshat, and about licking the floors in a hospital ward.

People wear mask in the day time do they wear one im their sleep🤔.
I mean the virus will get in your system while sleeping

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

The masks are best for those With the Virus & medical professionals

Social distance is best for those without the virus, along with the washing, cleaning & not touching their face

If healthy people do not stay home & out of crowded places this will get much worse ... exposure till symptoms is measured in Days (7- 12) - Not Hours

Those in city environments have to make a bigger effort .. to get social distance

I don't think it's going to be anyone's year this year, the way things are going.

It's not your fault.  It's the fake news mainstream's fault.  Sad part about all of this is, the hysteria and panic was created by the media while you had others trying to score political points in all of this.

I do believe the virus is serious but by how much, we'll never know till after with all the statistics but for now, we're watching dirty politics play out and our economy in shambles.

I just hope things don't get too expensive quick (more debt = less buying power aka inflation = GPUs will cost more, etc.) with all these bailouts, with the exception of a national emergency, it's understandably so or you risk SHTF and on the bright side, it's amazing seeing the private sector step up and give a helping hand which isn't a small order either.  Ford, GM, Tesla, 3M, etc.  Bravo to them.

Re: Corona Virus tracker from Microsoft 2020/03/23 07:12:28 (permalink)
OK... I have not said anything up to now because of a few reasons. Two being I like to know facts and hate the  national media of today. Another is how soft/sensitive some folks have become (Unable to accept reality and make changes for their own growth and others).

On a more serious note...

We are all in this together. This is our time to demonstrate compassion. It is a time for understanding, tolerance, flexibility and learning.

We all will still need to take time to smile, cry, laugh and love. We are after all, blessed with life, the ability to be critical thinkers and the ability to adapt quickly.

Please note what I am saying if from my own opinion. Please also note that I am blessed to be around a solid foundation of folks that have their heads on straight and work with facts. And as I work in the community with the leaders of all types. I believe this puts me in a place of at least a neutral point of view.

The chances of everyone going back to normal on April 1st is 0.000000%. It is best to mentally and financially prepare for July-Aug as a target for getting back to some form of what we think is normal.

Recession is in full effect. Get ready for it if you are not already. There is sadly, a very real chance we will see a global depression. Not just the US.

Covid-19 is the real deal when it comes to what it is capable of. What some may not be thinking about, is the flu does not spread this fast or live as long in the host. Because the flu is ingrained in the world, it is impossible now to control. The hope was to try and keep Covid-19 from doing the same. People infected with flu virus may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick to about 5-7 days after getting sick. Most with the flu virus become ill in 48-72 hours. It currently looks like Covid-19 hosts can infect others for 7-10 days, without even showing symptoms. This is why they are going with 14 days for quarantines. To "Make" sure as much as possible, folks are clear of the virus.

One of the other concerns is how fast folks are losing their lives once infected in a person with underlining issues. It is not the same as the flu. Normally the flu turns to bronchitis or pneumonia after the flu, then death is a real possibility.

After a quarantine, there is the assumption that everything is basically sterilized to not re-infect the host any given day in the quarantined area. What of something was missed and now they are a carrier again? Or they met a loved one, animal. Did the virus die in their space?

Then there is the problem of no real direction on what to do as there are so many "Chiefs" and "This will never happen to me" folks in leadership.

Yet here we are.

What I am seeing, is there are projects that local governments have been trying to fund, that all of the sudden are getting funded as they are converting the funds provided by their or the Feds emergency funds. Not sure if that is good or bad.

Sadly, then comes the fight between real world concerns. Hurting the economy for a short period with overreacting to not reacting fast enough and killing the economy in order to stop the bleeding. No one will ever get it right. It is impossible.

After that, comes the ripple effect.

Now the following has nothing to do about the virus and our need to be smart about this. Just thoughts on our recovery...

Distribution, supply chains, logistics and manufacturing are not capable of responding like a light switch. There are many examples I can provide, I will focus on one for a moment.

Our logistics/distribution system was already under significant strain before the outbreak with what was starting to look similar (Although a different industry) the mortgage implosion in 2007-2008. Large and small firms closing their doors and stranding trucks and employees in mid transit at  a scale not seen before. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/celadon-bankrutpcy-biggest-of-nearly-800-trucking-companies-failures-in-first-three-quarters-of-2019/

Not to mention the last 10-15 years, where the big corporations are forcing most small businesses into very small margins just to stay in business and compete. Will those small businesses survive or even open back up for business when we can go back to normal? Whatever that will look like.

We have to be aware of the trickle effect on shutting any industry down. Not to mention, we all switch to "Necessity" buying. No more "Want" or "Would like to have" buying in uncertain times. Think about how long it took to recover from 9-11.

Look at restaurants... What about all their suppliers and their employees? And now that the suppliers are hurting, they are not ordering from distributors. And now distributors are canceling or pausing their orders. Impacting everything down to the farmers and the part suppliers that support manufacturing companies.

This same effect can be tracked for most industries. Even if on May 1st every restaurant was open for business and was now thawing out all the food they froze. With so many having financial impacts, what is to say when the doors open, they go right back to the volume of sales needed to support all the employees they laid off before the virus? Not going to happen. There is significant historical data available showing when a company has closed their doors for over 30 days, it takes at least a year to recover back to the volumes before the shutdown. And that is during a normal business environment. Now add the financial strain their clients experienced... Longer recovery period.

And let us not forget... This Country was built into a consumer driven economy. How is a significant reduction or long term elimination in employment going to pay the taxes our government has placed themselves into needing to function? It won't. They will need to print money again. Call it 9-11 2.0.

As a Country, we better be veeeeerry careful and not see over a 15% unemployment. If we do... This event is going to take 5+ years to recover from. History shows that the great depression after World War One peaked at about 25%. All one has to do is go back and look at history to see that is a possibility if folks do not stop and shelter causing more Mayors to shut towns down crushing all but the essential businesses.

Now the flip side of this...

This to shall pass. And from it, will come many changes. More than we can imagine I am sure. Here are a couple I hope to see...

  • The unsung heroes right now is IT (Everyone is applauding the healthcare industry, I am speaking to what no one is speaking to.). Think about it. How many companies right now, in an extremely small window of time (In comparison to any other project ever done before in a large scale like this) sent the majority of their employees home? Where I am at, it is 400+ employees in a 48 hour window. All needing VPN log ins to imaging their personal computers/laptops. Resulting in nearly no negative impact to the customer experience.
    • This will show many companies that had fears of production with folks working from home, if they had been unfounded or not.
    • Many employees that thought they wanted to work form home. Now are finding out it is not what they thought it was. Others, are going to try hard to keep doing it.
  • New ways of discovering what to have stock piled and what not to.
  • Correcting the wrongs on how to respond when.
  • Logistical corrections and efficiencies are now being proven or discovered.
  • The broadband network will finally get improved.
  • The national infrastructure will undergo much needed changes.
  • The fight between one generations way of doing things and another, will merge into a unified voice/direction.
  • Helping our healthcare system right the wrongs forced on them by governments and budget restrictions. "Prioritization corrections".
  • Folks learn we actually do need each other. And come out of this with a kinder more compassionate mindset.
  • More folks are seeing now, what can happen with a unified direction.

Good lord, a wall of text. Hope it helps someone!
