I woke up this morning to a bios screen on my computer stating an unsafe voltages were tripped by the bios. I continue to start up windows and after I log in I just get a blank colored screen sometimes white, black, pinkish. I reboot into safe mode fine and uninstall the video drivers and am able to reboot into windows.

How do I check what has gone bad?

Sounds like your video card, or the current output you're using right now on your video card is shot.

    Things to try...

#1 Reset bios to optimized defaults.
    #2 Do #2 listed here.
#3 Test the system for issues. If there are no issues at this point you're all fixed up.

If you continue to get a pink screen try a different output on your video card. Trying another video cable would be a good idea too.

Listing your full system specs would be helpful as well.

I tried another video cable and I got to the desktop before the screen going out.

    Windows 7
    Intel core i7-4790k CPU
    Asus Maximus vii hero
EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti ACX SC+ ACX 2.0+ Graphics Card with Backplate 06G-P4-4995-KR
    Cosair TX650M power supply

I have windows on its own drive for easy installs, so I have that to try after I go through your list.

After going through your list, I can get to the desktop and have my slew of auto start programs launching before the monitor goes to a colored screen.

So I figure my next thing to try is to kill all those on launch programs and see what happens.

Well now with video card drivers installed it usually goes to a black screen after I log into windows. I guess I will try to format and reinstall a newer windows.

I formatted my OS drive and installed windows 10 and it downloaded the video driver fine and booted to windows. I'll do another update once I get all my utilities installed.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it comes up as a random color screen that I cant get past now. I had installed the GeForce experience and it started acting up again. I reverted the windows 10 install before anything was installed and was able to get to the desktop again.

Either your video card died on its own, or your power supply had some malfunction and killed it.

Most likely will be able to test it in another computer in the morning.

I was able to control the fans with precision x, so they seem fine.

I am able to play a simple game, FTL: Faster Than Light, without having the computer freeze up. Something bigger like wow or xcom 2 and I just go into a blank screen. Still don't have a way to test what is causing the problem though.

If the same issue occurs in another pc the card has a problem and will need to be rma'd if still under warranty.

What would be a good way to test this in another computer that doesn't really have games? Just run a video diag software? I guess I can check before hand on something that also crashes.

Well I found that I still had a evga 970 in my closet(looking to see if i still had the box and everything if I can get an RMA on it), so I installed that one and will report back how it does. I really hope its not the card because none of my evga graphic cards have ever had a problem.

It most likely is the card. Played a few games of vermintide 2 with the 970 just fine and almost want to say at a higher fps than the 980 ti was doing before this started happening. I guess I will try an RMA on it.

Thanks for reading and replies and your time.

when the card is in ''safe mode''   it running on low power ''safe''  to insure boot .  when you add the driver  the driver  kicks in the cards full power states / features  and that's where you see it fail as you say.

now could be a psu issue feeding the card  , but you say the 970 seems to work as expected  so  far  on that same psu .  for me here  99% of the time if a card fails to take the driver  or fails to work under the installed driver  but will display under safe  mode   its something failed in the card .

like said its best to test that card in another strong gaming rig or a build that can take the card / compatible for these cards   [ good psu , real motherboard , ect . not a prebuilt like a HP or dell type]

    good luck

Why do you have windows update the drivers for you?
You should disable windows installing any drivers except the windows updates.
Also, do NOT install Nvidia experience, or anything except the drivers  and physx (unless you have speakers in your monitor, and you need the sound drivers from nvidia to use them).
I am surprised that none said to disable that, and try an older driver. Nvidia has not been very good with their drivers as of late.
Go back to 388.00 drivers and check and see if it works with the 980TI before sending it in and having them send it right back to you.
If it still doesnt work, yeah, you have the evga 900 series high end video card problems that a lot of other users have (ie, need to rma).

    ya.
if you got that malware service  called win-10  you best .  with it you do as Microsoft want not as you want  even turned off I could not trust it as far as I could throw it  / I'd never use it   and have to hate your guts to even think of recommending it  to be used  [lol ]
