Ever since i got this video card the system will just reboot randomly. It seems like it's anytime there is a load. Is there a way to know if the psu is going bad?

I have a 8700k @4.8
EVGA RTX 2080TI XC ULTRA
Asus X-maximum Hero-x board
32gb 3200 memory
Thermaltake 850psu.
Is 850psu even enough?

Thanks

I've had this problem a couple of times over the years. Replacing the power supply fixed the problem. YMMV but I'd think power supply. 850 watts should be plenty, but one of the problems I had was with a 1000 watt supply, guess it developed a defect. I'm currently using a Seasonic 750 watt supply with my 2080Ti FTW3 with no issues.

Swapping the psu out with a brand new one will help you narrow down the issue. 850w is plenty. This problem could be coming from the card itself, overheating hardware, or even an unstable oc.

Before running out and buying stuff I would do some basic things.

Remove all the OC's on CPU, memory and GPU and see if you still have the issue. If not its likely an unstable OC. Changing out hardware can change the stability of an OC and you may need to revisit your voltages on the CPU OC.

If it still crashes, try doing a clean uninstall and reinstall of all your GPU drivers and overclocking software.

Random crashes are the hardest to figure out but your event logs "should" have some record of what has crashed. I say should but sometimes the crash is too fast to get logged.

+1 random crashes are annoying to track down. In the past, I had an abundance of hardware to swap in and out for testing purposes but not so much today. It has been my experience, if the system simply restarts randomly (non OC'd) then it is usually the power supply. I had a 1000 watt PSU that randomly restarted with 1080 Tis in SLI. It was tricky because not all the games utilized SLI or had poor optimization and the cards ran at 45 to 55% so it wouldn't restart until I played a game that pushed both cards.

I started seeing a pattern so I ran Furmark. It pushed both cards to 95% utilization and the PSU would trip almost immediately. After testing both cards solo, I determined the PSU was bad so I had it replaced. The new one has worked flawlessly! GL in getting this tracked down asap!

Put the card in debug mode from help in the Nvidia control panel, see if it still crashes. Typically a PSU issue, but I would test the card in debug mode (stock speeds) first.

I would start by looking at Windows Event Viewer to see what kind of crashes you are getting, usually a loss of power will show up as a Kernal Power event.  This often points to the power supply being unstable.  Like the previous users suggested try removing any overclocks, you can do this with your gpu in the Nvidia Control Panel by setting it to debug mode in the help menu.

You can also check the idle reading of your 12v rail in bios, by following this guide from our FAQ.
https://www.evga.com/support/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=59025

That should help narrow down to where the problem is coming from.

Thanks all. Just checked the even log and saw the Kernal Power event. So must likely the psu then?

Yup.. my money is always on the psu! Haha cant count how many times I've told people this.

Usually people upgrade the while system and forget about the psu or tey to get by by saving a couple of bucks by not buying a new psu. Eventually it will bite you in the rear. They wear out over time.

Grab a 1000watt and call it good. Always a good idea to get more then you need for the future.

Yep but for the Future or a second card you really should get at least a 1200 Watt PSU.

cpus and gpu keep needing more and more power as time goes by. I remember my pentium 200mhz/voodoo 3 3000 being passively cooled and only needing 250 watt psu for the whole system. Soon ill need to replace my 1200 watt with a 1600 watt to keep up with the growing power demand of both gpus and cpus :(

I picked up an EVGA 1600 P for $149 from the 2080 card promotion that is still going on. I have that sitting on a shelf as a backup.

I am curious about the original power supply make and model you're using.

Your covered! Got the psu I lusted over for about a month. Could of got that one for $180 but was hard to justify over the $73 I spent on the new 1300watt after the sale price plus 26 in evga bucks. Trust me it was real tuff and I even wanted to cancel the order 5 mins later! Haha I never satisfy unless it's the top.

Is 850psu even enough?

Thanks

Considering the CPU is overclocked, and the 2080 Ti XC Ultra is a bit power hungry, I would likely say it is the PSU at fault here.

Did you ever pinpoint the source of the issue?

Make sure you Do Not Mix the Cables, remove ALL the Cable from your Computer and use Only the Cables that came with the Thermaltake 850.
