I never thought about before, cause it's usually simple to setup, but mine has 2 bios with a lot of settings I would rather not have to setup again. So if you your PSU is on, will the CMOS reset if I pull the battery? I swear I used to change the battery and settings would hold as long as the PSU power switch was in the ON position, But I can't remember.

With just the PSU on? I don't know. Does it get power from 5v standby? I don't know. But if you carefully change it while your computer is on, I don't think you should lose any settings. I read on another forum that someone used a cupped piece of paper to catch the battery. The danger with changing the battery with power on is that the battery can fall and short something out while the motherboard has power.

A number of motherboards allow you to save the BIOS settings to a USB flash drive which would be far better for changing the battery and then restoring saved settings over trying to change the battery when it's got power from a PSU to it.

As long as the PSU is on it supplies standby power to the motherboard and CMOS settings will not be lost when the battery is pulled.

Wow thanks for all replies, it's very appreciated. good info..
I did save the 2 BIOS Profiles to USB, but I "think" I remember some of the settings not making it over. Not sure. My battery is not dead, but it's nearly 7 years old, and I started thinking about it last night. I'm going to try just the PSU switched on, board powered off. But I will wait until after Christmas I think.. I will update this post on how it goes. Still going strong with X99 FTW / 5930K no issues in games. nearly 7 years now.. going for another 1-2 when EVGA comes out with the next Intel HEDT Sapphire Rapids x or something interesting.

Hi guys ... merry xmas , Mr Scary if ALL you are doing is changing the battery and NOT Flashing The Bios. You can create multiple saved profiles in your bios under the "Save and Exit" tab these profiles are saved on a separate memory chip on the board and will not be lost if you remove the bios battery or unplug the psu. However they WILL be erased during a bios flash

I didn't change the battery yet, but I upgraded the CPU, and just reset the BIOS, and used the USB Profile, and that works perfectly.. No problem. However installing the new CPU fouled up so much that I ended up just resetting, re-flashing and going through all the settings, and it started coming back to me. More then I imagined, the worst was the HW Monitor having to set all the smart fans and such.
