I read that earlier today. Now why would you want scan when you cannot print? Seems reasonable to me!/S

I was being sarcastic, hence the /S afterward which meant the comment was dripping with sarcasm. We seem to be in an age where companies know what is best for us and the consumer is expected to take it. The entire supply chain thing grates on me, as business incompetence is reward with more revenue. And when it looks like things might get back to normal, profit hungry executives are now making production decisions that support the artificially high current prices. I guess a business figures they could sell to someone other than consumers. Interesting concept.

Most inkjet printers are an ink scam. Give away the plastic garbage printer and sell the ink for 1000x markup. Even the aftermarket inks are robbing people blind. Wear out the throw away printer after 5 reams of paper? No, you can't scan now, because the printer is going to force you to buy another throw away printer to enable scanning again.

like i said before.. corporations will be corporations.. and they only seek profit above ALL and who thinks otherwise is really living in wonderland but honestly... i pay around 80 euros to 100 euros ( depends if there's some promotions) every 2 years perhaps.. for 4 ink cartridges for my OfficeJet PRO 6960 ( 903XL cartridges) that's a lot.. that's equal to new OfficeJet PRO 6960 printer cost every 2 years i only print when i really really have to! otherwise.. its all digitalized

No joke, I worked at a very wealthy non-profit in NYC for a few years; but they were spending so much money on Konica toner that they bought ink, by itself, in tubs, that I would bring the cartridge to, and have to scoop up and refill. The only learning curve was how to reset the ink level sensor on the inside first. But I can't tell you how many shirts/pants I had to just throw away because of refill spills.

Excerpt from OP link "The problem is, if they run out of ink, Canon disables the scan and fax functionality." -- end -- excerpt------ At least the lawyers will make some big $$$ on this class action, consumers will probably get $5 off on their next ink refill (Joking) apparently the fax & scan circuit goes directly through the ink cartridge, which has a float switch & counter built in & they stop working once the limit is reached It is a software "gate" ... should be easy enough to fix --> Why not just sue because the printer can "say it is out of ink" - well before it is actually out of ink ?

How did they possibly think this was acceptable? Their in-house lawyers must be total idiots.
