Is there a limit to the model/generation of the card we are stepping up from?
Can I buy a new 8400GS from Amazon and use that for stepping up?

I can't find this information anywhere on the support page for step-up, but I talked to an EVGA rep and they seemed to be saying that any -KR card would be okay. The page says that "you can unlock the Step-Up option for most products." Which suggests that there are some 3 year warranty products for which step-up cannot be unlocked.

You should be able to use any card that is brand new, purchased directly from an authorized retailer. If it is sold by a third party through Amazon marketplace, it will absolutely not work.
Amazon will link you to third party resellers, so make sure it says “sold AND shipped by Amazon.”

OP is trying to buy a 40$ card to get on the stepup, lol. The only cards that work are the ones ending in KR with a 3 year warranty, just make sure it's sold by a authorized retailer, and not some 3rd party that sells through Amazon....

$46.88, excuse me. LOL. It worked, I have a step-up ID now. I have an EVGA 980Ti from 5 years ago. There isn't much available for me to "upgrade" to while waiting for the step-up to process. It is less painful to have $50 tied up than $400+. And if this doesn't work out or I can find a 3080 at retail sooner than the step-up, I can change my step-up to the 3060 for my son (assuming that will be in the program in the next month or so). You have to admit that this is quite a good plan. Counting down to see how long it takes Amazon to sell out of the GT710. Hottest card on the market. hahaha

Why would you buy an old cheap card assuming you are stepping up to the 3080? You might as well buy a 2070 super. Either way you are paying the ~$810 or so combined, so why not just spend $500 now and enjoy a good card for a while and spend $300 later? It's better than buying a $200 card now and spending $600 later. Either way the cost is the same. Buy the best card now that is cheaper than the card you want to step up to.

2070 Super not in stock. 2060 Super not much of an upgrade from 980 Ti. If I can land a 3080 at retail, I'll switch my step-up to a 3060 if they're out in time. Buying a more expensive card would prevent me from doing that.

The way things have gone so far, we are what, 2 weeks since release and it's still small numbers of cards dropping, only to be instantly cleaned out. Literally seeing buttons go from add to cart only to be sold out when you get to the cart. I have been online through at least 20 different availability windows, always the same, add to cart, can't check out due to card being gone.

I did the 2080 Super since that card was not much cheaper and a significant upgrade over my 1070. This way even if my step up takes 5 months, I will have a solid card :) .. here is to hoping EVGA can fulfill the step up queue sooner than Cyberpunk launch.. doubt it.
