As most of you know... I make stuff.  Anything really.  From machines, to more recently... knives.

I was inspired by a Youtube post of wrapping spring steel around some tool steel.  I took a much different route to do it, but in the end it was a success.  Sadly, the billet I made was not wide enough for the project I wanted... so it got me thinking.  Dangerous I know..

I am going to challenge those of you out there to make a knife.  TWO of you out there who can take up arms and heed the call, are handy with tools, and actually HAVE tools to do this.

But to make it more fun, I am going to cut the billet in half and send it to TWO of you... and the community will see who made the better knife.

Here come the pictures....

On the right, is the tool steel core.  Left is obviously the spring.  I extended it to blast the inside to make good contact.

Here is the billet welded up and ready for forge welding.

Successful forge welding:

Trimming off the excess spring material:

As you can see... it didn't fit the knife I wanted to use it for:

Each of the 2 challengers will have 8" of steel to work with.  Enough for a small knife.  However you design the knife is up to you.  (hidden tang offers more blade length fyi)

I can help you along with the process, offer advice and whatnot, but the community judges who wins.

BONUS....

I also have a chunk of Damascus Steel laying around that I will toss into the mix.  It will be slightly larger than the section of spring steel wrapped tool steel (lets call it san mai of lack of a better term).
The damascus chunk:

A glimpse into the intricate layers of the billet:

So in summation, I want 3 of you who would like to build a knife and dont mind being judged by the EVGA community post here... and let the sparks fly.

Some small ground rules.
1  Lets set the min post to 50 so I know you are an actual member here.
2  Post a picture of your shop with the tools.  Gotta see the goods (drill & grinder is a MUST).
3  Lets keep it to CONUS US.  I am footing the bill for shipping.
4  HAVE FUN

Here is some help for those of you who think you can't do it:

If I still had access to a forge, Id take you up on this just for the sheer fun of it.

I hope to see some good things out of this.

I'd laugh if someone had a family member that's been making blades for 20+ years take you up on this.

The forging was already done, stock removal time.  Gotta hacksaw and grinder?  :)

I would love to give it a shot, but I am not close to home to be able to take this up right now. I do with someone would step up and get this going. I want to see their craftsman skills.

Nateman, if you sent me the billet and I drew on it what I wanted you to do with it.  Would you do those things for me?

You can draw anything on a piece of paper and I can make it happen.  I'd like to see what some of the folks here can accomplish.

If you dont have a taker soon, I would love to work on one of the pieces of steel. I dont have grinders and such, but I can get a nice set of files to start, and get a grinder along the way.

I will give it till the end of the month, if no one is up for it, t I will re-purpose the spring steel and the Damascus is yours.   If you are up my way you are welcome to use the forge & press etc.

I may make a trip up to visit to see this work in progress and to get some video of the process if you are up for it sometime.

I get home March 12th, and have to work all week, but I would love to work on one of these right after I get home. I could come pick it up also, just to save on shipping.

I limit myself to removing the old scales and making new ones on pocket knives.
Using burl, spalted wood or buffalo horn. Don't have the metal working hardware.
Although I have an old hand saw I was thinking would make a nice knife or two or three.
Working with buffalo horn make me think I am at the dentist getting a cavity filled! Yuck

Life is too short to carry a cheap pocket knife

I have a few chunks I left in the woods to spalt.  I love the look.  Scares me though... using "rotting" wood.  But after stablizing... its good to go.
