Okay I'll take a few pics. My Florida place isn't anything special, don't expect much.

My Missouri place is where all the big boy toys are at. I'm not headed back up there until the eclipse in August.

I will be traveling somewhere to see that eclipse. I will NOT miss it.

I got lucky, the eclipse will be going literally over our farm land up there. We are actually in the totality section. I plan to head up and fish for the week out of our ponds on the property. When the eclipse happens, just pause, record the eclipse with my gopro when the time comes, back to fishing.

It will also be an opportunity to meet up with a buddy that I didn't get to see during my hunting trip in november. His shops make our farm's look like an a hobby operation.

Anyway, here is a pic of the workbench where I will be doing most of the fine shaping, polishing, and sharpening. Gratuitous target rifle being cleaned at the moment . Bonus points for whoever can spot the retired graphics card in that mess.

Of course here is a pic of the other workshop...the driveway. I have a collapsible small workbench that I will use out here to do the major shaping and contouring with the angle grinder and bench grinder. This way i dont start a fire and dont set off any of the plethora of smoke detectors this house has in it. If the feeling strikes me, I might even do some etching out here. I have a line on a makeshift forge a coworker has if I wanna do some major reshaping unless that isn't allowed as part of this contest.

For what I wanna do with the handle, I'll have to borrow a buddies drill press to keep everything accurate enough to look good.

GO NUTS.  you have access to a forge, then go for it!

We found some places along the line that are military friendly (armed forces vacation club).  There is one in South Carolina that is (kinda) a days drive from Jersey that we can get there.

Got Scarlett's address, need yours Bruno.

Here is an update.  This is what the blade will look like if you don't grind off too much of the surface:

Here is what I suggest you guys do.  Find yourself an old large can and build one of these if you don't have access to a forge.  This is ALL you need.

If you pound it into shape, you will get a pattern similar to what I just pictured.  This has incredible potential for a DEAD SEXY knife.

I really think you guys should make a small forge, and hammer it a little bit on an anvil.  Even your vise anvil will be enough.  I may make it a bit easier for you guys... but more on that later.

Well the coffee can one intrigues me, I may make it just as a fun project. I was going to use my buddies forge down here, but it's nothing I would call professional, just a homemade forge that is pre-existing.

Im hoping I dont have to do any major reshaping, but that all depends on how the measurements work out.

I wonder though, if Scarlett wants to come up & make his own, then you can have that entire billet.  Its just under $40 in steel.  Takes around a day to crush and draw out the material into a similar size billet.

Alright guys, just to keep everyone in the loop, I got the spring steel and damascus from Nate last week, but had to delay starting due to a family emergency. Everything has calmed down now and I started on the spring steel piece today. I still have lots of rough cutting to do. When thats done, I'll post the general shape before final shaping etching and handle work.

Measurements of the spring steel from Nates work fit well with what I am making so I won't be doing any forge work with this piece.

May is shot for me.  Headed to Fort Pickett for a month long rotation.  :(
Will probably have to schedule for June.  Probably will be bringing some knives with me to knock out all the mundane sanding that still must be done.

Making more progress, I want to get the handle roughed out before I post pics. I test etched part of the blade today to see where I was in depth compared to the springs. I think it looked excellent, but I am going to order a different pommel. The pattern makes me think of a snake's underbelly.

It's looking pretty good. Once I get the blade closer and the tang for the handle cut Ill post pictures. If it doesn't rain tomorrow after work, Ill probably post the first set tomorrow night.

Alright, picture time. My apologies Nate, I should have listened and put it in the forge and flattened it a bit more to keep some more of the pattern.

Trying to take some of the nics out where the spring steel didn't quite fit together make me take too much off the center. I still love the look though. and now that its etched, the nics seem to give it a nice character.

Okay, First pic. Blank arrived, and put the base design on with a sharpie. Oriented the blank so that the blade end is the end where the spring steel was penetrating deeper into the billet

Second Pic. Cutting off the excess on the end of the blade.

Third Pic, rough cutting the notches out where I would eventually grind out the curves of the blade. Dremel seemed to work best for this, even my big angle grinder with a cutting wheel was incredibly slow going.

Most of the rough cuts made, I decided to make some changes to end at this point, didnt like the way the curve on one side looked weird.

I completed most of the shaping for the last few curves and the end. I decided to do an etching test. I only had Muriatic acid on hand, so its a bit lighter than I would like. Still need to work on the last curves and make the blood grooves.

Finished the sides, and tried to start making a blood groove. I think I am going to take this over to my buddies place and have him mill out the groove. Doing it by hand is looking terrible and I keep skipping the tool out and making marks next to it. I also dont have anything wide enough to get the width I want without making the cut really uneven. I etched the blade longer and wiped in between checks to start getting a good color to it. Lots of spring steel taken out from the grinding. I know, I have let our master Nate down. Forgive me master.

Still need to cut out the handle area, fit the guard and pommel and start cementing the layers of the center of the handle. I have a friend who collects knives, so unless we are having a raffle here to keep this competition going, I am going to give this one to him as a present. Nate, I wanna pay for the cost of the materials so that you can make another billet and have another competition here. This has been a lot of fun. It's been a long time since I made a knife from a blank. Thank you for getting me back into this.

Hopefully you have ignited a spark in a few people to start trying it themselves.

I love it!
I would take it easy on the blood groove though, since its the only part of the spring steel that is left.  Without the look of the spring steel, then you simply have a tool steel blade.

If you want to take another stab it it...I can make you another billet where you can do more forging, and less grinding.  Just let me know.  Also I can throw a nickle layer in it ;)

and holy COW, you used a DREMEL?!?  That must have taken you forever??   You have WAY more patience then I do.  I am curious what handle material you are using.

I only used the Dremel for polishing and cutting the big chunks off. For some reason it was much much faster cutting g the original major hunks out with the Dremel wound up to 35k rpm.

The major shaping and grinding down was done with a grinding wheel and starting with 80grit flap wheel going progressively smaller grit as I got closer. Then polished with 400grit Dremel sanding drum and the polishing buff with compound.

I'm not solid on handle material now, but I am thinking a stacked leather handle with a wide nickel guard and I have a large nickel eagle head pommel to go with it.

For the Damascus, I have a nice chunk of turkish walnut burl left over from some grips I made for a friend's 1911. I'll go full Tang with a nice sealed piece on either side with brass rivets.

Damascus one is profiled and etched. I found some wood I like better for the handle so it will have some beautiful ironwood slabs on either side.

Let me know if you want some stabilized burl... i have a bunch.  Or if you need me to stabilize the ironwood prior to installation.

While I wait for Scarlett to start on his knife I have continued work on the Damascus blank Nate gave me. I put the final etch on tonight and mounted the guard. Going to start on the ironwood tomorrow night. Hopefully have this one done by Monday.

I am still away on orders until 11th of June... so it will have to be sometime after that.

Yeah that is a beautiful piece of Damascus.

If you have another damascus blank or two I'd be happy to purchase them from you. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting back into this. So much so I purchased a 4x36 bench top belt sander. Once I get more comfortable grinding in the blade profile, I plan to make a set of Damascus kitchen knives.

Problem is this is a rabbit hole, now I want some leather tools to make a sheath.
