Hi, I built my computer one year ago and everything was fine. I recently got a new gpu and everything was great. After 3 weeks of using the new gpu I notice a burning smell which seems to coming from the power supply. I have a supernova 650 GS. What could be causing this? What should do I do? Should I worry? Please help

    Hello NostalgicBog,

Is this smell you're describing very apparent when the system is on or do you have to get really close to the power supply to smell it?

the smell is not strong when I'm putting my computer at almost no load. I have to go and put my nose on the top of my computer and I can smell it. But when I put my computer on a lot of load like when gaming, the smell is all over my room. I opened my computer and the smell is strongest from the Power Supply. I had issues with the power supply in a couple months back where it would make this constant high pitch ringing noise. That ringing doesn't happen anymore but now this smell is here.

Welcome to the forums..Is the fan even working in the PSU?..You'll need to disable the ECO Mode on the 650 GS to see it run under low-load conditions..With ECO Mode enabled, the fan should begin to run at about 35% load.

Me, I would grab another PSU somewhere and try it..You can pick up another one that's "good enough" fairly cheap..You can use the OuterVision Power Supply Calculator or the EVGA Power Meter to check your estimated system wattage requirement..If you use the EVGA Power Meter you'll receive a 10% off discount good only for 30 days in the US region..But if you're sure the 650 GS is the issue, contact EVGA Support in your region about it.

Maybe put your old video card back in (what was it?) and see if it still smells..Info about your system hardware and OS is usually needed and asked for when posting in the forums.

Always nice to have a spare PSU available for testing purposes or to use during any RMA time.

True. Also when using the calculator, when it tells me the psu, does it give me a psu with just enough power to handle my computer? For example if my computer required 550w would it give me a psu of 550w?

OuterVision will give you an estimated system load wattage and also the minimum recommended PSU wattage, which is higher, a the bottom-left of the page..Hover mouse over those for an explanation.

I always play it safe, and get something a little higher in wattage.

This doesn't sound good. There could be lots of different reasons, why it is smelling like this. I would get my hands on a new PSU to make sure, that the hardware can't be damaged from your PSU.

It could also just be New Electronics Smell.

Doubt it as the psu has been used for a whole year already. New electronics don't smell like a burning odor.

even then new electronics dont tend to 'stink', a light smell perhaps for a short time when brand new, but thats it, honestly i just dont think it would be worth the risk.

I would recommend more then good enough. I would say something a bit better like 750W or 850W and name brand. I would also take apart the system and take the PSU into another room and see if the smell is really coming from the PSU. If it is then odds are it should be replaced when it comes to power supplies better safe then sorry.

Even if you do opt to go with a new power supply, I would still if you registered, RMA the one you have, so that you can either have it as a backup, or sell it on Ebay/Amazon/Craigslist, etc. to get some of your money back.

Is your case on the floor where it picks up serious dust?  PSU get very hot, and not sure if you have smelled a furnace kick on after being off all winter, but it smells awful from dust accumulation. It could be some serious dust in there getting hot and stinking so as someone said a good blowout could help as well if you want to try the less hassle, and less expensive route before spending the money to get something else.
