So this holiday season I was given the task of building two gaming pcs for these two kids that lost everything after hurricane Matthew flooded their home.  Currently they are living in a hotel and about to relocate into a new home and the only thing they wanted for xmas was computers.  My wife brought up the fact that I build and repair computers as a hobby, so here i am now.

Building two gaming pcs on a budget was tasking but with the help of my neighbors I was able to get two fairly decent monitors for free. I was able to pick up two m81 thinkcentres off ebay for a fairly decent price, unfortunately the cpu advertised in the listing was a i3-3220 but I received one 2100 and one 2120.  Instead of returning the units I opted for a partial refund as they may still suit my needs.   So all in all they cost me 130.00 shipped after all was said and done. (i3 cpu, 500gb hdd, 4 gb ram, dvd-rw) Hell I figured the ram, dvd-rw and hdd alone would cost 65.

Also was able to pick up two gtx 1050 off newegg for 99.00 each.

I originally went the new build ark but once built left no room in the budget for a decent gpu.  I hated going with a prebuilt but it presented the best bang for buck and more room for a dedicated gpu.

My question for you guys is do you think I should try and pick up some better performing cpus for these systems?   I could probably check ebay or make a wtb thread in the marketplace.

For budget gaming a Core i3 is fine, id more concerned with the ram being only 4gb

First off, I think what you're doing is awesome and highly commendable. Selflessness is rare these days.

I agree with candle in saying that 4GB is a bit low. If you could do 8-12, that would suit their needs better. As for better CPU's, if you could find an i5 for comparable price (meaning that the cost for the cpu + mobo would be close to what you're paying for the i3) you could do that. That part is totally up to you because depending on how old they are, the type of games they'd be playing would be very different than someone older/younger.

Regardless, you're already going out of your way to do this and I'm sure they're going to be happy no matter what they end up getting in the end. It will be something to make them feel somewhat "normal" again and hopefully be their escape from reality for a bit. I'm interested to hear how things turn out.

8GB is enough, 4GB is really low.

Got some synthetic benches.  Made with obs studio and using my rigs capture card so no performance hit.  Fairly impressed with the 1050 not needing any aux power.

Notfordman is sending a 4x4gb mushkin kit.  So that would bring them up to 8gb each.  I appreciate the offer though.

I found a couple of 2500 for 66 each, may go that route.

Just ordered the 2500's maybe I can sell off the 2100 and 2120 and add that to the budget, we will see.

It's been two months and the systems are rock solid I just would like to thank everyone again for helping me out in getting these systems up and running for these kids.  FEMA is still working with her and her husband and their kids to get them back on track but at least now they have a dry roof over their heads and no longer living in a hotel.

Also my wife threw in a couple of 20.00 steam gift cards to get the kids started with their new systems.

Notfordman cable guy hooked up the router and it is working flawlessly, also was very impressed with the systems and was totally surprised that a couple of kids would have mechanical keyboards.  If you ever need anything don't hesitate to ask, I owe you far more than you know.
Candle 86, would like to thank you for your offer to help.
Jeffro66, thanks for your offer to help also.

So it's been 6 years since I joined evga forum and I have met some great people on here, they all try to help as much as they can as well as I try to do the same.  As time passes we are less active but we always find our way back in some shape or form.

I appreciate everyone's interest in this thread during the very busy holiday season and glad everyone cared so much about people they didn't know.

Yeah they were fun builds, but crunch time toward the end was hell, she ended up picking them up on Christmas eve.

I appreciate the fact that you would of helped too, I wasn't really looking for help with the builds it's just that everyone jumped in.  A few things needed repairing and refurbishing but I was willing to do the work.

I have done the same few times, i work in tech so i can usually get a few for cheap if not free, clean them up and get them setup for basic stuff, done a few mild game machines also, nothing fancy but the people i do it for appreciate them. Was down that way a few weeks back and looks like things are starting to return normal, besides the road construction by ft. Bragg. Lol

Well you inspired me man, I was volunteering and ran across someone who lost everything to fire, I couldn't afford what you did, but I set them up with a 17in LCD, Athlon II X4 640, 8gb of ram, 500gb hard drive, windows 10 and a 9500GT, I wish I could have built something more but they where very thankful.

Still a nice little build, first system I built for someone was from a old school computer they got, I threw in a q8200 and a quadro gpu.  They really wanted to play minecraft, single income family like mine, so I was eager to help.  I didn't have no money lying around and was limited by the cases form factor, remembered I had a quadro that was in my kids original build, Lenovo s20 came with a dual core which I replaced with a w3530, had a ample psu and was able to run any card I could put into it.

Now with the new low profile 1050 those low profile cased systems can get some use.

All that matters is we do what we can to help who we can, knowing they will get some mileage out of that system.
