Well, it finally happened. I broke down and ordered a 1080 TI last Friday. Should be here today or tomorrow. I clicked on the slickdeals page where the card could be had for 699 after mail in rebate(I should have know it was too good to be true, but I did order it literally seconds after it poped up, which is how one gets good deals). Header said FTW3, did not see DT model until later in the day when I went back to check for more comments, and I quickly pulled up my newegg order.

I had been waiting on a good deal for an EVGA 1080 TI for a few weeks. I had missed the deal where the green ftw3 was 699+gift card because it disappeared in minutes/seconds. Anyway, I was in a rush to pull the trigger on this because of said previous deal, and didn't research(edit: I did research ftw3, but when I say I didn't research, I mean I didn't copy the exact model number and pull up the EVGA page for it because I assumed 1080tiFTW3 was 1080tiFTW3, I'd been looking at the 1080ti series from evga for months, in drool mode) the card or even know it was a DT or what DT was.

Here is how Newegg has it listed:
EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 DT DirectX 12 11G-P4-6694-KR 11GB 352-Bit GDDR5X PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card.
If you click on the picture gallery, you have to click the three dots for more pictures to see the box cover predominantly displays the DT across the front.

Upon reading reviews I found 2/4 reviewers had also purchased the DT mistakenly. Perhaps the newegg description can be updated. I was going off the slick deals user posted description, so I can't say for sure if it would have made a difference for me either way. Again on slickdeals the DT was listed in the body of the deal but not on the title iirc, at the time of my hurried deal searching.

Of course now I know DT stands for down tuned, or aka reverse binned chips. It's a shame, since I do enjoy overclocking, and I will still try to overclock this one.

Anyway, I immediately jumped back on newegg to return the card(it had been about to hours). The card was already in shipping. Apparently it is part of a Destiny 2 bundle(I already have destiny 2, lol) and there are NO RETURNS on the card from newegg. Wow, I really screwed the pooch on this one.

Anyway, I guess I'm gonna try to overclock the card and see what I get. I don't have a lot of options. I'm coming from a 980 TI Classified. If I'm stuck with it(and I would love to hear from an EVGA rep that would let me upgrade the card to the actual FTW3, my card will be unopened, and I'm actually willing to pay a crapload to upgrade at this point, I just want the real thing) then maybe I can give you my experiences in this thread once I install it. I may wait a while to put it in, just to see if an opportunity to get rid of it comes along that isn't me chancing to sell a 700 dollar card on ebay).

I wanted to know this. There is almost NO info about 1080 TI DT cards out there. I read somewhere that these have the stock bios? How do they run the third fan, if so? Should I expect 1 fan not to work, or should all 3 fans work on this thing? I learned a valuable lesson here, don't worry, lol.

edit: to be clear, I'm not blaming EVGA, but I did want to report this issue to the forums, just in case it is interesting or can be useful to anyone else.

Sucks! That's the number 1 reason I don't buy gpu's at newegg!! Or really anywhere online. Always locally from microcenter so I can easily return the thing if needed.

Should call evga.. they will answer basicly right away and ask them if the res anything that can be done.

I'd never grab a dt "down tuned" card to say a measily $50 bucks.

I will call them for sure once the card arrives and run the problem by them. I thought I would go ahead and make this thread. I really understand that I'm the idiot here, lol, but maybe they can help me out. It's not my fault I was born dumb!!! :)

I read somewhere that these have the stock bios? How do they run the third fan, if so? Should I expect 1 fan not to work, or should all 3 fans work on this thing?

Stock vbios meaning... stock 1080 ti clocks. Not meaning stock reference vbios. Yes, all three fans will work.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. I was thinking that I suspect some of the lower benchmarks from the founders editions may have been due to thermal throttling. Even at full stock clocks this card is likely to bench better than a stock FE if thermals get involved at all. It should still be a little faster than a non overclocked stock card, in that case, so it's not like I'm not getting the real 1080 TI experience, even if I have to keep it. I just won't be able to push it to the max.

DT just means that it didn’t like the full ftw3 bios. Many still get the same exact overclocks. If you are going to open the card, you should test it before assuming it is just a horrible card because it says DT.

Many DT cards overclock just as good as non-DT cards. DT just means that it didn't pass every test in a suite of rigorous tests that EVGA uses.

    +1.
I would open it and see how it performs (benchmarks, OC, stress test, etc..).
If it does good, I would keep it.

    OP,
I bought an currently use the EVGA GTX 1080 DT card running +170 core, +500mhz mem. 2075mhz on water. Never had any issues with the card. Wife's card also hold the same overclock.

Thanks all, I got the card in when I got home last night. I haven't opened it. I'm gonna call EVGA first and tell them my story and see what they recommend. I'll report back when I know more. Thanks for all the advice/info.

I just spoke to an EVGA rep over the phone(great service, stellar customer service). It looks like my card isn't eligible for step up. I am still gonna wait a few days on opening the card.

Once I do, I will report back with some benchmarks and try to do some stability testing on the card.

Thanks for your help and advice everyone. I suspect it may still be a great card, and I also suspect that some of the major advantages the FTW3 has over the FE is not necessarily just stock overclock, but also thermal performance.

If... and only if... the next gen cards are released in the next 80 days (or so), you may be eligible for step up. Keep your fingers crossed. Currently there is nothing to go up to, but there may be later on if Volta releases soon.

Yeah selling it and losing prob $100+ then paying the difference most likely isint worth it.

If your really concerned about overclocking the ek ftw3 card will deliver if needed lol.

Those 3 fans are awesome and why I bought the card in the first place hoping to not go with water cooling per usual.. but luck has it I stumbled on the newer thermaltake tower 900 in a microcenter store that's made for water cooling and I caved as usual haha.

Every card has a chance on the silicon lottery! Good luck to you as your due for a break!
