I'm honestly shocked that 7 and 10 were not first mention...the original 7 is best in my opinion. Tactics and 10 both are close for second

Tactics by a mile, the original none of the followups

    Followed by 7

6 should be on my list but it got so hyped that the actual play was a let down

For me with 6 it's more the story and graphics.  If you mean gameplay at the end  it's Square and the gameplay in their games was never quite as good as Enix.
Six's strength is Tina as heroine but you have a number of other strong character stories as well which makes it compelling.  In that sense there are little Vignettes for certain characters.  In this way Octopath Traveller is an homage to it as well as in graphics.

edit:  Nice to see you have Tactics as 1.  It's appreciated but many don't have it as #1.

Tactics didn't stay at my no 1 mostly because of the grind with replay as time went on. Wotl didn't help with adding the multi-player aspect. Became to easy for everyone to level. With 7, the chocobo replay value just felt less tiring.

This answer for a lot depends on their first and the time. I remember 3, but didnt play it much and i know its great, but i fondly remember playing 7 and it will always be my number one

I understand you mean 6 guitars but a number of people will think you mean 3 for the Famicom since many are use to the accurate naming system now.

VII and X/X-2 for me. I had a lot of fun with Final Fantasy Tactics as well on my old Gameboy Advance SP.

I never did beat the Weapons without using a PSX game shark though  Also FF Brave Exvius caught my attention at SD Comic Con in 2019 and I've been on/off with that game.

Call me old, but for me it's final fantasy for the NES.  This is purely an emotional and nostalgia based response because it was the first time I had played that style of a game.  That and when you have not played something for over 30 years your mind probably builds it up to be more then what it was.

I think everyone should share how old they are when they share.

    I'll start - Final Fantasy IX - I'm 32.

Understood.  You might also give the original Phantasy Star a play through.  I remember playing Phantasy Star 2 back in the day on a compilation and was put off by the size and look of the character sprites compared to the SFC/SNES FF ones.  Gotta be honest that I preferred the way the battle system was on FF too.  All this being said for "Phantasy Star" I found myself hooked on it and I was playing the GBA compilation.

I wonder what this list would look like for the Japanese crowd as FF3 is largely beloved and considered the best FF for the Famicom.  In fact it was going to get a 2D 16 bit remake just like FF1 and 2 did on the Wonderswan Color.  Someone told me the consensus from Square was it was too much work so they gave them FF4.

I started FF12 last week and I cannot say that it is my favorite. The controls have not aged very well. FF6 is probably my favorite so far, but I have not played FF15 yet.

Which Final Fantasy would you recommend to someone that has never played any?

I tried FFXV and it looked interesting but decided to play it when I have a better PC.

I'd say that depends on what kind of game you're looking for and how much you prefer top-notch graphics. All of the main series single player games up to 12 use turn based or, starting at 4, active time battles where the character's speed stats determine how quickly they can take actions. Starting at the 12th game battles play out in real-time with the player able to switch which character they control on the fly with the others automated. The first six games were all 2D with 7 through 9 having 3D characters on 2D backgrounds and 10 forward being completely 3D. If the graphics are not a big factor for you but the characters, story, or battle system are then those are going to vary greatly from one person to another.

Aren't they remaking some of them?

They're completely remaking FF7 but it will span three games now and only the first one is out right now. They've ported most of the old ones to various newer systems over the years but they mostly retain the 2D style of graphics. FF4 was completely graphically redone with a cutesy 3D style that I didn't care for and voice acting that I didn't like. There are several of the older games that have been released on Steam that you could check out and see if they look appealing to you or not. One of the biggest draws to the Final Fantasy series from the SNES onward have been the characters and stories so if that appeals to you the most then I think any of them you might potentially enjoy.

    Alright, thanks.
To be honest I guess I could start with the ones included on Gamepass.
I also know that every Final Fantasy is supposed to be its own universe, right? So it doesn't really matter where you start (probably some references here and there though) but also some must be better than others.
Objectively, would you say the remakes are just as good, better or worse than the originals? Sometimes remakes can ruin the original experience by changing things too much and ruining the original atmosphere.

Yeah, they're all standalone stories (excluding FF10 and FF10-2 as well as FF13 and FF13-2 and FF13-3) so it won't matter where you start. There are some reoccurring character names and themes but that's all they are, just names but completely unrelated characters.

I think the only one that has substantial changes to the story and systems is the FF7 remake. The ports of the earlier games sometimes have things added in like some optional harder bosses or, in FF4's case, the ability to play the game with whatever party members you choose instead of being locked into specific ones. Though for this game I'm not a big fan of doing that because the original game limited the characters that come with you due to the story. I'm not sure exactly which versions of the older games are available on PC though as there were sometimes several different versions made for the various consoles and handhelds.

As a young kid FFVII took a whole lot of my childhood. Can't say that about the other ones. FFX was cool too.

Final fantasy 7 (the original) will always hold a place in my heart as it served as the gateway whereby I fell in love with RPGs. Beyond that, it becomes difficult to pick a second favorite as there are elements of each that have their virtues (story line vs battle mechanics vs graphical novelty).
