Hey guys, as the title says I've been MIA for a while now. i was involved in a head-on collision on the interstate in April 2015. guy who hit me was suicidal and accomplished what he wanted. needless to say its a miracle i'm alive and all that good stuff. so after 10 months in a hospital bed, breaking up with my fiance because of all the stress that came with it and moving back to New Orleans.. i'm back. looking to upgrade this old rig of mine that sat in a closet for all these years but i don't want to spend a small fortune like i use to. SPECS in sig! what do you guys suggest. like i said out of the game for a couple years now and don't really know chip sets and all that good stuff anymore. upgrading graphics cards best bang for the buck or what?

upgrade cpu and gpu's that should do it (if you can get the video cards that is).

Glad that you made it out ok from that crash. Looks like a nasty crash and I wish that the other driver hadn't tried to take another life with his. As for the PC what are you looking to play? What games did you like? Have you played any games since April 2015? I think that it's easy to recommend stuff that might be overkill for the games you might want to play and while it's great to play the latest games I also have to take into consideration that you might have missed games like Fallout 4 or Witcher 3. Probably wouldn't make much of a change to the recommendation but someone who likes single player games and plans on playing on an existing 1080p monitor wouldn't really need a 1080ti to get the full enjoyment out of the games.

I really appreciate that Hoggle. I use a 1440p monitor. As far as gaming goes before the accident I played a lot of wild star / Tera / PoE / battlefield. things like that. I’ve played both fallout 4 and the witcher 3 on console while in the healing process. I’d like to get into Black dessert online possibly (I bought a founders pack before that game even dropped because I was certain it’d me my new mmo) . Also would like to try out some PUBG, anything on steam that catches my eye. I’ve always been an mmo player over single player on PC, although I can imagine the witcher 3 looks pretty amazing on PC

Good luck on recovery . You might be able to just get away with the videocard upgrade ,.. but while you've been gone we've been in about a year long shortage of memory & videocards for gaming . Prices are through the roof and supplies are strained. So good luck on finding a card to upgrade to......

Also agree with just upgrading GPU to something like a GTX 1080 or 1080 Ti. However like was also stated, good luck getting your hands on one for a decent price right now. My wife is still running an i5 3570k in her PC, and her rig can do anything my rig can do with ease. As old as Sandy Bridge is now, CPU performance simply hasn't made any large leaps since. The next generation Nvidia GPU's are due out soon, so you may wait a few months and see what is to become.

Man life is rough sometimes. I'm glad you're getting back on your feet after all that trauma. The good news is that your OC'ed 2600k shouldn't be too much of a bottleneck at 1440p resolution. The bad news is that GPu's are hard to come by right now. A GTX 1080 would compliment your system nicely. Your sig. says your running SLI but that is not recommended at all as the game developers have basically just stopped supporting it, so get the best single gpu you can.

Really, your rig is pretty good and will play most games no problem., especially if they are coded for sli. You have more than enough Ram, your ocz agility is a little meh, although the Toshiba ones are pretty good, so a upgrade for that may help some or a raid setup and the rest is great. Who could complain really?!?! I game with the rig in my sig and I haven't found a game I cant play at med to high settings no problem. If you just have the itch to upgrade id say wait for Ryzen 2 in april for cpu/mobo but ram will probably be really expensive by then. Glad to hear you made it through such a devastating accident. My wife went through a motorcycle accident and died, ended up in rehab eventually and had to learn how to walk, talk, swallow, write, got to the bathroom etc... again and spent about a year doing that before she could go home, so I know all too well what you went through brotha. Keep on keeping on and good luck to you in the future.

thanks everyone for the replies and the love! i'm guessing video cards are price jacked because of all the bitcoin stuff going on? ill probably end up getting a 1080 then once i can find one that's not crazy high. shame about SLI not really being a thing anymore. whats the deal with that?

Nvidia does not want to support it and I guess many games don't use it.

oof glad your ok. But like other people have said its a pretty bad time to upgrade a gpu.. the new series is probably around the corner possibly near April just really depends . part of what you should ask your self is what is your end goal for this upgrade to really know what you should upgrade as I know some people still rocking a 2600k and 1060. I have a few friends who have decided to wait out for the next gen cards since prices are so nuts. But if you can find a card for near msrp It wouldn't be to bad I'd keep an eye peeled in the selling forums here as sometimes people put up cards at reasonable prices

That is actually terrible. I'm glad you're alive though OP. Personally I would say go with a GPU upgrade and a CPU upgrade as well down the line. It'll help you, Aside from that - it's a bad time to return to the industry as seen by the GPU prices but then again, we're all in this together my dudes.

honestly just want to play games like PUBG and black desert online at max settings. i know my 1440p might push it a little hard though, on bdo at least.(maybe its the SLI thing those games dont like?) im looking for games to get into again honestly. maybe some battlefield, maybe some battlefront? been browsing the QUE on steam for something to play!

First up, Welcome Back! - really sucks what happened to you. That asshat should've done a header into a bridge support, not another person, selfish prick. Also sucks your fiance bailed, but hey probably better sooner than later, as hard as that is to take. Glad you fought your way this far. Onward and upward! As posted by everyone else, the market just sucks right now. Memory I purchased ~10 months ago for $250 is now priced at $450, and that's just regular retail pricing. The 1080s now are being jacked up mostly by individuals reselling due to lack of supply - there's a huge demand in part thanks to the whole bitcoin explosion. Some 1080 cards are being sold for well over $1,000 now, which is insane. Unless you have cash to burn, I'd suggest sticking with that CPU for now and trying to pick up a used 980 for fairly cheap in the meantime. Once the bitcoin crap calms down and supply starts to catch up to demand (and maybe the few memory makers get sued for price fixing lol), then you should look at a full platform upgrade. Also note that the newer CPU's basically require you to 'upgrade' to Windows 10 due to driver conflicts and other issues, depending on what hardware you use, so you have that joy to look forward to, lol.. I probably wouldn't bother going SLI - I used to run strictly SLI for years, but GPUs are getting so powerful that it seems more and more new games are not being optimized for SLI, and many newer CPUs have cut down PCIe lanes to 16 anyway. AoI (all in one) water cooling systems are much improved over the last few years - not up to a custom water loop performance of course, but still very capable for most users, and no maintenance headaches (big bonus imo). I used to play Guild Wars 2 - beautiful graphics on that, you might like it, I just don't have the time for it these days, but I do jump on Battlefield 1 every few days. There's a new Battlefield coming out this year (2018) at some stage btw, probably Q3, which will apparently be WWII based - basically a sequel to the current Battlefield 1. There is also apparently another slated for early 2019 which will be Battlefield Bad Company 3 and will be based in a mid- and post-Vietnam conflict setting. Hope that helps some. Cheers.

Wow thanks for all the love Nereus. yea prices are jacked, lucky my Gskill is under warranty, I had to RMA it to get this rig up again since it died for some reason. I was looking at some 1080s, even had on notify from evga for the FTW and kingpin. (which they are available as of today) just don't know if i can bring myself to drop 1k to 1.3k on a GPU that'll be obsolete in a year. the 980 idea crossed my mind, even a titan(those are still high too though). I see how much GPU's have come since the 580s I have i'm just wondering if a 780-980 is that much better than SLI 580s. maybe i'm being sentimental because this was my first custom loop and I only want to upgrade it to the best haha. trying to get good again at games at this point. its been so long i just don't have the reflexes for some fps gaming! but working on it. Humble has a good 2k sale going on right now that I picked up Civilization VI from but that's definitely a slow paced game comparatively. still kinda searching for something to hook me. i did play GW2 when it first dropped, i'm sure there's been a lot of upgrades/ patches since then to make it a little better than i remember it, but maybe ill pick it up again. isn't it f2p at this point?

A 980ti would be a sizeable upgrade exspecailly with how some games don't gain much from SLI. But the new cards could be around the corner. But if you can find a 980ti for a reasonable price and not the 450-500 I have seen them going for it may be worth it

Before prices went crazy they sold for about $275 to $325 if I remember right.
