I have taken a long rest from the computer OC world. Looking at getting back in. My last rig used the X59 Classified board on a I7 920DO cpu. It's been running at 4.2 GHz on water for about 8 years. Well sparks flew (literally) and it's time to build a new one. I think my radiator wore a hole through from vibrations in the case.

Tough decision. Go for another home run ball or just buy good stuff and run closer to stock. That was my initial plan but the bug started to hatch yesterday and I'm looking at water cooled loops suddenly, M2 drives, huge cases like the Thermaltake Tower 900 to name a few things.

I would probably consider waiting for the Dark but wondering if the FTW would be fine. EVGA is out but I've seen some on Amazon and a few other sites like Ebay. So the big question is, if Amazon or other resellers like that are supported by EVGA? They were not supported when I was into it  years ago but has that changed? I may consider doing a step up from a FTW board and don't want to get stymied because I didn't buy it from an approved vendor.
Or should I just grab an Asus or ASrock board?
I passed up a 9900K at microcenter yesterday. Probably shouldn't have but I don't have a board picked out so thought I'd wait.
Any help appreciated.

LOL, I just looked at my sig. Yea....it's old! lol. Time to renew that baby!

I7 9900K, Asus ROG Maximus XI Formula, EVGA RTX 2080 TI Black, EVGA 1600T2 psu, Thermaltake Tower 900, Samsung 970 EVO MVMeM2, G.Skill Trident Z 16GB DDR4 3600 CL15, EKWB D5 rgb pump res combo with 400 mm reservoirs. You should be in for a treat updating from that rig.

I am currently gathering parts for a new i9 9900k/ Z390 build. I think those 9900k's are still in somewhat short supply. I got in on a pre-order with Amazon but waited a few weeks before finally getting it last week.

I think as far as Amazon (and Newegg as well) as long as you stick to stock sold and shipped by them you will be ok. However oftentimes they are out and only offering stock sold by third parties, I would probably be careful of those. Oftentimes they also have the price jacked due to limited availability of the item.

I am holding out for the Z390 Dark, mainly cause I have had such good success with my current Dark board the last 5 years. Have most all my other parts already. I was tempted by the FTW, but I am patient and decided I would just hold out for the Dark. I am sure the FTW will be a very good board also.

I read through your build post. Looks good.
If I buy a FTW and then step up, I'd probably have to go with a closed loop cooler since I don't think I'd want to do a full loop, drain and replace so the hoses fit.

That thing still feels like destroyer and gamer god and all that junk and even if you wanted to do some lighter stuff. Not lying lol, appropriate average user builds or something. Thanks! Yep I have been around since the EVGA Nforce 680 days lol.
I went with a Corsair H150i Pro CLC for this upcoming build.

That's the problem I have, I like overkill.

In all seriousness though, I game strictly in VR and want to get the best I possibly can. Probably could have been just as well off with say a 9700k, but figured what the heck.
Have been seeing some good reports on the 9900k with VR.

    Absolutely!!!

I also had a 680 board. They had a deal about wanting some and exchanging for a Dark board or something. Unfortunately, I had traded may 680 for the 780 so no dice there. I had one of the original memory killer 680 boards.

We came from a similar place. I just upgraded to a Z390 FTW and 9900k from a E770 Classified and i7 970 @ 4.2ghz. The X58 platform wasn't slow by any means but this upgrade is much snappier. I think you'll love the upgrade.

As for a motherboard, I'm very happy with the FTW. Happier than I thought I'd be. I planned on stepping up to the Dark when it's released but I think I'm going to stick with the FTW board. I don't have LN2 or anyway to take the Dark to it's limits and my 9900k already hits 5.2ghz on the FTW. Aside from the Dark just being a beautiful board I can't think of a functional reason to step-up to the Dark.

Very Nice looking rig! What memory did you use? I'm kind of thinking similar. If I can hold near 5GHZ daily wouldn't really need the Dark. But going back to some drag racing is still fun. So I may grab an FTW or an Asus. Need to see who has the best support/forums on overclocking them. That's probably the most fun anyway.

I don't think you'll have any trouble hitting 5ghz. I went with a 32gb Corsair RGB 3200mhz kit I bought off a forum member here. Haven't started OCing those yet.

Yeah you can do 5.2ghz agian, that is overkill though. Just cruiser at 4.7ghz and I think the Icyest, I do not know some 3rd party Gallium a little different.

Doesn't anyone drag race anymore? I won't run it at max overclock but at some point in time I plan to find that max "stable" overclock. Like my old rig. 4.58 was the max but I ran it at 4.2 for 8 or 9 years.

Same with Vid cards. We always tried to find the highest scores.

Other thing I've noticed. There's not a lot of folks on here anymore. Where does everyone go now to talk overclocking, new boards, GPU's etc?

Yeah I have noticed this also, back in the X-58 and X-79 days for sure, there was a ton of forum activity.

Sad indeed. I think a lot of people have moved over to Reddit. Which sucks since Reddit is so toxic and there's a lot of people that have no idea what they're talking about.

Maybe then..everyone else had the Rampage and the sabertooth. stuff ran forever at 4.2ghz....there's probably still a sabertooth surely running. Somebody did have area 51 though.

I need to send the supermicro after that catastrophe, dumped out all over the right and front and a bent pin..stuck with 55.

The conversations here may have slowed down but hopefully the current content is accurate enough for you guys.
And as you guys stated above, yea the top clocks are great to reach, but daily cruising / stability is all what really matters in the end.

I could "probably" hit 5ghz with my i7-7940x on an X299 Dark (actually have a bios screen shot of it at 5ghz) but settled at 4.8 as a daily for temps and stability

Kind of sad. Black Friday weekend.... Have a ton of parts sitting in carts out there but cannot decide on a motherboard. Even scored a 9900K at Microcenter (and Newegg).
I really think I want to wait on the Dark. But....But I don't want to hold off forever. Was thinking the Asus board and get a decent overclock but it will never go through the roof. Same with the ASRock ultimate board.
Want to start a water cool set up but can't do it without a board.
    I wish they would let us know a potential release.....3 days.....3 months.....etc.
Can't even buy an FTW board.

    I7 9900K, Asus ROG Maximus XI Formula, EVGA RTX 2080 TI Black, EVGA 1600T2 psu, Thermaltake Tower 900, Samsung 970 EVO MVMeM2, G.Skill Trident Z 16GB DDR4 3600 CL15, EKWB D5 rgb pump res combo with 400 mm reservoirs. Corsair LL120 X 4, LL140 X 2, NOCTUA NF-f12 X 3, EK XE 480 and black ice 360 Radiators, Custom LED lights, PetG tubing.

I think I wore out my CC this weekend. Ordered parts from all over.
Setting up to do a dual loop Water cool.
    Parts so far.
    I9 9900K
    Thermaltake Tower 900
    970 EVO 1TB
EKWB... 560 rad, PETG tubing, D5 pump going on 250 or 400mm res, All black fittings, Green coolant.
I'll reuse my Corsair AX1200 psu and GTX 780 for now.
Still cannot decide on motherboard. May wait for dark. #1 contender right now is the Maximus XI Formula.

Suggestions on "other" boards to buy? Want a good overclocker.
