Just arrived back home from my (final) deployment overseas.  It has been a loooooong time away from family and friends.

I have set a 3 year timer for the military... pending 1 of 2 outcomes (regarding promotion board) but if and when that happens the clock starts.  Being in 3 months shy of a quarter century I have seen some things, and it's getting time to retire.  Just gonna spend some happy time relaxing at home driving my wife and kids crazy.

Hope everyone here is well!

My best friend recently retire after 25 years in the Army.  He did 3 deployments and has told me some stories throughout the years.  Always good to hear a service member has returned safely from a deployment.  So welcome home, enjoy that family time and thank you for your service.

Welcome back stateside, things got a bit messy in your absence but I bet you're glad to be back. 25 years is a long haul - my dad also retired after 25 years (LCDR USN). Getting to spend time with family is a biggie. Thank you for your service.

    Welcome back nate😊👍
    Well let's see🤔
We have a couple old members back in the norm,
We are facing shortage of computer hardware,
We have UFOs popping out here and there,
We have new "hippies" members around,
    and more😁.
Looking forward of more telescope space pics from you😆

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

    Nate,

if you do the math it does not make sense to stay past 20.

The promotion carats are carefully designed to keep you in forever.  I nearly declined my promotion to O4 just because it was going to keep me in 3 extra months past 20.....  I did the 3 months and leadership was telling me "why don't you just stay for one look at O5?"....  my answer was "because I'll get promoted"

I ran the numbers O-4 at 20 (retiring at 40 years old) and O6 at 30 retiring at 50 years old.....  ***under the legacy retirement system 50%****  and my numbers didn't include a check from the VA rating...  the O6 @ 30 will never catch me.

That's what I'm saying. O6 at 50years old after 30 years active retires with 75% high three base pay..... Don't get me wrong, it's a sweet deal...... But........ That was 10 extra years NOT drawing a retirement check, a VA check, and a new job in the real world.

The old 20 year cliff vesting system is great but you really have to avoid getting dragged down the road with the dangled carats.

O4 board was back in March.  Just waiting on the results (O6's were just posted last week so O5/O4's are shortly behind) and then the "high 3 retirement".  I have no intention of completing ILE and all that jazz.  Just wither away my last 3 years on staff.

Oh I will be visiting the VA as soon as this yellow ribbon thing kicks off.  Seen enough IDF to last several lifetimes.

BTW, we can collect and get VA.  For us we either have to accept the VA check, or the normal pay.  Whichever is higher.  There are some folks in my unit who are 100% and basically work for free there.  To collect retirement points I guess.

Nope. That's not how concurrent receipt works. You just need a 50% rating which most people with combat tours will have.

If you honestly do the math declining a promotion to exit asap probably checks out. Like I said, I tossed and turned for months about declining my promotion because it dragged me to 20.25 years. That 3 extra months was rough.
