I’m back guys... here’s a run down on my pretty much two year hiatus...

Race mountain bikes now

Still in college

Make great money

Got married

Looking to build a PC and haven’t built one since I had a 4820K and haven’t read up on anything since January 2018. Is Intel still not knowing what’s up with the line between their Enthusiast and maintstream?

Welcome back in a short list of absentee

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

    Welcome back

If you're making good money, the latest and greatest from Intel is the i9-9900K: 8 cores/16 threads, 5.0GHz boost speed, 16MB cache, fast af but runs a little hot - I wouldn't run it on air, but a AiO cooler like the CLC280 is sufficient - I just installed the i9-9900K today and it's no worries with that cooler, sits/peaks about 75° on full load for an extended period, which is definitely hotter than the i7-8700K I was using, but not hot enough to throttle anything, so it's all good. This is likely the best Intel will have to offer for some time for HEDT builds. It's a great all-round CPU as it's probably the best CPU available for gaming, while also being a solid performer for apps that can utilize multiple cores.

AMD have just released a beast Ryzen 9 3900X which has 12 cores/24 threads and I think 70MB cache, but lower clocks, so it depends if you have a use for the additional cores as to which is better. If you're primarily gaming, I'd go Intel (I just did lol), if you're primarily using some sort of rendering programs, video editors, photoshop etc. that can utilize all those cores, then go AMD, that's my thoughts on it anyway.

As far as GPUs go, NVidia are pretty much ruling as usual, with their latest high-end being the 2080 series, I'd recommend the hybrid RTX-2080Ti GPU - hybrid made a HUGE difference to my Titan X(Pascal) - I just clocked it to 2.1GHz about 20 minutes ago without having to touch voltage or anything else, and it's only peaking at 62° on full load for extended period, so I don't yet know how high it will go. If you have the time to maintain a full custom water loop then go for it, but if you're like me and have a pretty busy schedule, the AiO water cooling is a great alternative, and hands down beats air cooling.

If you want to go extreme on the GPU like a compute card, then you can spend $3k+ on the Titan V . GPUs have got pretty expensive these last couple of years.

Again welcome back, gratz on the permanent hook-up and everything else. Cheers.

I just swapped my hardware out for an i9-9900k build and have no regrets!

But from what I hear, AMD is better now a days... idk I've never used AMD.

Welcome back BF3PRO! The Craptacularone is or was into mountain bikes, he makes an appearance now and again. :) Sounds like you are doing well, good deal. If you haven't looked at GPU prices yet, you maybe in for a surprise/shock. The performance is upped as per series, and ray tracing is a new feature used in some games.

Welcome back, glad to see you're doing well. Looks like you have been busy.
School, working, family man now, keeps you pretty busy I imagine.
Not seen Greybeard in a while. Not sure what happened.

The hardware has advanced quite well over the last couple years.
Intel has a couple 6 core CPUs with no HT for a little over 200$ The i5-8600k and 9600k.
Both can get close to or hit 5ghz. Z730 or z790 chipset There are better CPUs for those sockets 8 core with HT for under 500
Amd has picked it up some, the Threadripper series and the new 37xx series making Intel step it up some.
GPUs the GTX1080Ti used for under 500 is a good video card, the 20xx series is pretty good too, but the higher end $$$$$ cha ching
They are pretty good and data computations, folding and crunching.
AMD has stepped up their game there too, prices are fairly reasonable.

Have a budget in mind? What will you be using it for, gaming, rendering, data computations, all of the above?
If playing games, what games and what resolution do you plan on playing at?

Good luck with what ever you decide.

Mostly rendering/editing mountain biking and cycling tutorials. I study exercise science and physiology and want to be a cycling coach. And I dabble in guns a little bit and there’s a heavy single threaded app called Gunstruction a that’s super cool but takes a lot of single thread performance. As always the games I’ll play would be the BF titles but I’m not a big gamer much these days. I remember when I cared about pushing 1080 max BF4 at 115-130fos on super cool to me at the time 144hz Asus VG 24.

What hardware do you have now that can carry over? I take it you have a GTX1080, that is still a good GPU for what you do.
    Budget in mind?
The i9-9700k is an eight core with no HT for 370 or so.
I would think for what you're doing a hexcore i5-9600k
The z370 and 90 can be had for 150$ or less that work quite well
My Asrock z370 is very stable and I paid 125$ So is my EVGA FTWz370.
Those EVGA can be had for less than 100 on Wednesday's sale day, refurb. but has a year warranty. May still have some this Wednesday
There are really good deals on used x99 xeon V3 CPUs that have 6/12 or 8/16 cores.threads and they are unlocked.
X99 boards can still be had for a reasonable price.
Not sure what you have now.

I don't have any of the newer AMD CPUs myself, I did get an AMD Radeon VII GPU. Works great for data crunching I do.
Its double precision calculations can't be touched for less that 4x the price, 4k$ Nvidia TitanV
Not gamed with it yet, but I see no reason it won't do well @ 2k 144mhz

On Wednesday starting 12AM PDST they have sales on Bstock and some other stuff with free shipping.
Last two Wed. they had z370FTW MBs for sale at a good price. I think it was 99 or 89$, not sure.
Also you will need DDR4 memory, the new i5-i7-i9 Coffee lake CPUs like fast ram. I been using Gskil DDR4-3600 2x8gb for about 70$
The MVME drive are really fast, and prices are down. I use a 256gb NVME for the OS and main programs.
Samsung OEM, fairly cheap and very fast and Samsung quality 256gb NVME 34$
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/MZ-VLB2560-Samsung-PM981-256GB-M-2-NVMe-PCIe-SSD-Solid-State-Drive-FRU-00UP488/283426237940?hash=item41fd852df4:g:5VwAAOSwrv5clEz9

Then use a larger spinner for the file storage.
If one or two TB are enough, NVME can be had under 100 and under 200.
Any larger, I would use a spinner.

Looking to build a PC and haven’t built one since I had a 4820K and haven’t read up on anything since January 2018. Is Intel still not knowing what’s up with the line between their Enthusiast and maintstream?

I think I’ll do the i5 and put the money towards a good GPU and RAM for my purposes since I do plan on editing a lot of footage. Things have changed since my X79 Dark man. With the 6 core i5 should I get one
With hyper threading for editing or are the cores strong enough?

    Welcome back!

If you are doing high end gaming, you want either a i7 9700K or i9 9900K. Right now the i7 9700K is at a really good price if you have a Microcenter around. Otherwise, the best deal I have seen is a i9 9900KF for $430 on Newegg. Any of those should be good enough for streaming or video editing. The i5's are a little weak in that area but still do a great job on gaming. The main thing Intel has over AMD is the max clock speed and the ability to have that max clock speed on all cores.

    AMD's Ryzen 5 3600 is a pretty good buy, really similar to a i7 8700K in performance.

Vega 56 is a pretty decent GPU for the $225 range. The RTX 2070 super or RTX 2060 super are the GPU's I would recommend looking at.

As for RAM, best range for your money is in the 3600MHz range. You can get 32GB for around $150, just make sure whatever motherboard you get supports it.

    Main PC | Secondary PC
    Intel i9 10900K | Intel i7 9700K

MSI MEG Z490 ACE | Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Master
ASUS TUF RTX 3090 | NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super

    Samsung EVO 970 1TB and Crucial P5 1TB | Intel 760p 1TB and Crucial MX100 512GB
