Got a few Amazon cards for Christmas and trying to figure out what to "burn" them on. Thought about getting a drone off and on for a while now. Thought I'd see if any of you guys are using them and have any recommendations for 250-350 (or less of course). I've looked at a ton of review lists and the Amazon reviews for all of them are mixed with the same issues across the brands like "fell out of the sky for no reason" "return home made it go fly off in a random direction with no control" "flew once then wouldn't sync" etc. so I'm really not sure what to go with. edit: should specify I won't be using VR goggles (yet at least) and am looking for photo/video purposes not the racing style.

I personally won't be spending for a drone for a while till the tech gets better and when I do, it will be a premium DJI. The cheaper ones I worry have high chances of being fly aways and don't want to be liable if one does plus, I live in a popluated area. If you're out in the sticks, I don't see why not as long as you're not near a airport or just off limits airspace. I almost forgot. DJI actually has a low cost drone ( Mavic Mini) but they're smaller than the bigger ones they got. Also check out their other cool accessories they got.

Yeah that DJI is on the list of the few I was looking at. It's definitely a budget buster at $400 though. Was also looking at Holy Stone HS720, HS700D, and Potensic D60 & D88

I've wondered about drones for awhile now, and it seems the FAA has made, and is making more laws governing it: https://www.faa.gov/uas/recreational_fliers/ Seems to shows that's it's popularity is still growing. Seems you can't fly them at airports and other locations where it might cause problems. And passing an online safety test in the future too.

Yeah, right now for entertainment purposes it seems pretty simple, and then drones like that DJI Mini come in at 249g and don't need the license.

If its your first drone buy a couple on the cheap side with camera streaming to your phone. Wrecks happen until you get the hang of it. Buy ones that have replacement rotors available and not those that have rotor guards as those with guards are are much more susceptible to light wind. You will get your jolly's from a small $60 drone without a doubt and have the practice in before maxing a budget. Edit*** Get an extra battery or two so the downtime of charging doesn't daunt the experience . Buy the spare rotors at time of purchase too. <\/,,

Do you use drones? Any recommendations in that price range? I looked at a few lists of "best drones under $100" and they all seem to be super limited (~80m real range (100 advertised)) etc. with super short battery life and long charging times. Seems like a recipe for frustration leading to giving up and moving on to some other hobby really quick, but that's just my impression based on reviews and stuff.

I have no experience at all to offer. I am interested in getting a beginner drone, in the near future. I was also looking at the Holy Stone 720 and 700 [among others]. Personally I would definitely get an extra battery as suggested. Looking on Amazon they offer a bunch of accessories. One I thought would be a good idea, a battery lock. Brushless motors seem to be the way to go, more powerful. Watched a video or two on the mentioned drones. Let us know what you went with. I hope you have a good experience w/e you choose.

Thanks, I'm going to be heading down to a friend's place this coming weekend for a gathering. He's also a pro photographer and has started using drones the last couple years. He's pulled them out to play with in the past and let people try them out a little bit (extremely supervised, they're $2000+ drones lol). Maybe I can get him to pull one out and help me make sure I'm not gonna be dropping money on something that I end up actually not liking once I try it lol.

I bought my first at Barns n Noble lol for about $29. No camera and it fit in the palm of my hand. Flew it in the house and buzzed the kitties until one smacked it across the room and two props shattered. Picked up another one and frankenstiened them after the second had a similar fate outdoors with the lightest breeze. Its really all about the budget in the beginning. Start small but not as small as I did unless you find one at that price. You will need to be able to handle any drone with or without a camera. First person video may be appealing (and a Fn blast) but there will be times you will need to look up and fly it quickly. Weather the video locks up, it catches a wind or it clips a twig. I purchased my second drone at micro-center in Yonkers for around $60 or less, think it was called a cricket or something. That one had a decent range and a very clear picture streamed to my phone. In FPV I buzzed squirrels in the tree tops and it had great control. One day I sent it straight up to get a good shot of the Catskill mountains (40 miles away) and lost connection at about 1000 feet. It came crashing down and landed in a small stream. Took a while to find it but I did. I sent it up again and the wet circuits made it fly away over the treetops and into never never land. Then I bought a larger one for around 120 that had extra props included and had extra props available (bought those too). With that one, I buzzed the cats, the squirrels and my pit-bull. It had a better range, clearer image and did one click stunts but, had prop guards and was easily affected by the wind. Still have that one. Then I moved up to a $500 drone without the guards, cant recall the brand but after looking back, I think all of that happened within the first month or less. I will be stepping up again but not until I dust things off in the spring and getting the hang of things all over again. Moral of the story, start cheap because happens

I wouldn't bother with anything less than a Phantom 4 Advanced. Wonderful platform. Go get your part 107 and it'll instantly pay for the drone with side jobs.

i flew a Dji standard 3 quite a bit. And it was meh. I never got the stated range out of it, and that was in clear line of site, no buildings etc. Lost contact with it so many times it was unreal. Ended up modding the controller to boost the signal output and while it helped, it wasn't always perfect. But i'll tell you it was fun to fly. this is a fly over of the Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio (I lived down the street) This is during reconstruction of the stadium. And the essential teardown of the neighborhood I loved. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDmU2kCQudI&t=53s

I have a phantom 3 pro. I like it. I use it our at the deer lease to look over the property. Used to fly it in town until I tried a beta software and crashed it. I rebuilt it, and it has all new parts.

Thanks, didn't buy yet, but got birthday $$$ to put towards it if I do :) Yeah I did get to try his drone out. He's using that Mavic Pro I think. It was really nice and got the hang of it pretty quick thanks to his instructions. He had me.......carefully.........doing loops around the trees on his property at the end lol.

Well, I think I'm going to go for the Mavic Mini if I pull the trigger. Was going to try and wait for it to go on sale but realized it's only been out a few months so guessing that's not coming anytime soon. Will probably pay extra for the "fly more" package. It's 499 vs 399 but comes with two extra batteries and an actual charger, a case, more props that the base package, and prop guards. One battery alone is apparently $70 so that seems well worth it and "theoretically" extends flight time from 30 to 90 minutes. Based on real world reviews I've seen of tests that means probably more like extending it from 20-25 to about an 1-1:15 depending on conditions. Between my Christmas money, birthday money, and some $$$ laying around from selling my H500M case, I just have to add on about another $100 on top of that to cover the rest including tax and a SD card.

Well, just pushed the buy button on Amazon. It's not back in stock until Monday though so it won't be here for a week. Picked up a 128GB card to go in it. Hope I didn't just throw $$$ away lol, but I'd been thinking for a while of getting a drone, and I didn't have anything else really to use the $$$ on right now.

The good news about the Mavic Mini is it doesn't need to be registered with the FAA since it comes in just under 250g. With that said I'd be interested in the Mavi Mini but can't justify it's price. Might look for a used one if the price is right.

Yeah if I didn't have the "free money" I probably would have done something cheaper, but the Mini seemed to be at a good spot with features without much compromise or reported issues in the reviews. Also, looks like it will be here Saturday now somehow. Amazon's listing (shipped/sold by) still says in stock Monday, but now my order says it's going to be here Saturday somehow instead of next week so yay?

Win-Win in my book. Yeah amazon shipping tends to do its own thing. The quicker the better. I sidetracked earlier while looking up on the Mavic Mini and noticed an accessory that some will add LED Lighting on them for night flying. Not sure if I would do the same as a novice but would eventually try it out if it is of course allowed. (Just watched another one of this guy's videos and he makes some awesome 3D printed accessories on etsy for this drone.)

Nice! I saw there's some accessories like filters for the camera lens and stuff. Not sure if the others in the price or or below that I was looking at have anything like that or not.

Got the drone on Saturday. Didn't get it charged/updated/etc. until just enough time to do the tutorial flight in the backyard and come back in before it was dark. Took it out for about 20 minutes on Sunday though. Flew great no issues, so now it's practice time and finding a video editing app to deal with the video.

That's great news! Keep us posted. Sorry if you already stated but did you end up going with the DJI Mavic Mini?

Yep went with the Mini. Cost more than I had gift cards/etc for but I think it was a good call as far as price vs features, performance, and reliability of the cheaper stuff. Part of that extra cost was the $100 for the "fly more" combo with the extra batteries/etc. I figured I'd want an extra battery anyway and supposedly just one costs the majority of that combo price difference and you get a bunch of stuff in the combo including 2 extra batteries.

IMO, I think it was a smart move to get the extras for the money. You basically ended up paying for the extra package, so that seems like a great deal. I hope you like it, and get some good use out of it. Have fun with it!

Awesome. I also like that combo kit but feel the price is a bit steep for such a small drone but agree, it's a great buy overall if you had to buy some individually. Don't be a stranger and share some nice shots and or video.
