Just did some reading about what was up and coming.  AMD going from 12 to 7 seems like a pretty big leap. Apparently it's still going to be on the AM4 socket and hit the market next year.  I assume there will be a new chipset optimized for it and some have said that they expect some older AM4 mobos will be given new bios updates to accept it.

    yes I will upgrade.

I think that's when I'll get out of this AM3+ socket and do a new build.  I've been looking at full tower cases, but don't need the extra space for components, they just usually have better ventilation.  There was one full tower case from Rosewill I looked at that had a 230 in front, on top, and in the side panel with a 140 in the rear.  Been looking at the HAF series from cooler master for mid-tower options.   I'll probably reuse the 1080SC2 and the cpu cooler from my current setup and get another cheaper cooler to keep this rig running with the 1050 as primary gpu.

You’re really in for a treat if that’s your primary machine. The jump to DDR4 and a 6-8 core cpu are noticeable. Nvme drives are pretty cheap too for OS drives.

What CPU are you running now?

Not sure what nvme drives are.  I have a 500GB SSD for my only drive.  Heck, I just last month upgraded from a Phenom II x4 965 processor and a Radeon HD 5770 to an FX8350 and first a GTX1050Ti, then after a bit of buyer's remorse and a week or two of going back and forth on it, a GTX1080SC2.

It's not about need now is it?  For what I use my computer for, a tablet will do.  In fact, for the last 3 years I only turned my computer on if I needed to print something.  I did everything on my Samsung Tab 2 9.7.  I'm just getting back into the hobby again since April or so.  I ended up formatting and installing Win10 from Win7 and now the original Crysis game won't install.  LOL  I wanted to see that all maxed out on the 1080.  I got Crew 2 with the 1080, I'll see how big of a download that is when it releases.

Edit... looked up NVMe drives. I like it.  Two less cables to run in the case.
Edit 2... definitely using one of those, at least for my system drive.

Yes a CPU upgrade will do wonders, you can't max out a 1080 with any FX chip, Id expect the 1050 was bottlenecked by the 8350. Clock for clock its slower than Core 2

I'm looking forward to a new build, but will have to do a lot of reading when the time comes.  Doesn't look too much different, just new technologies like those NVMe drives that I wasn't familiar with.  Hopefully by next year they will have the occasional boot issues with them worked out.  I was reading that some mobos don't like to recognize them as an available windows drive without some setting manipulation/trickery.   I use my optical drive next to never too, so I may try to set it up as an external drive and just get it out and connect it up occasionally for the rare times I need it.  Will have to figure out how to do that later.

Yeah a FX-8350 paired with a GTX 1080 is a bottleneck in of itself. I run a A10-6800k @ 4.9 GHz and it bottlenecks my HD 5870. On the main note, 7nm should be interesting. More cores, higher clocks and hopefully higher IPC. AMD is just a stones throw away from Intel in terms of IPC (~5%). What's really hurting AMD right now in comparison though is the clocks. Intel can crank out 5 GHz easily from their 14nm+++++ (yes, it's a joke) process. If AMD can get Zen 2 to do high 4.8 GHz or so overclocks and deliver another 5-10% IPC uplift. They will have a product that bests Intel's all around.

I was reading today about the 7nm epyc and hope that isn't what will be seen first.  I'd like to use the latest 7nm when it comes out, but not if it's a $1500 server chip.  Considering that I already have the 1080 and the Noctua NH-D15S cooler, I hoped to get away with $1K for the rest of the system.

I loaded a fantasy shopping cart up with what I think I'd need to do a 2700X build today and my cart ended up at $1138 without a case or monitor.  I can only assume that the new chip will be at least what the 2700x is today.  Looks like I better plan to bump the budget up a few hundred.

     AMD 7nm CPU
    EVGA Supernova 850 G3 $79  ordered
    GIGABYTE X470 AORUS GAMING 7 WIFI $225
    CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB $219
Cooler Master H500 Case $100  ordered
    Samsung 970 Evo 250GB  $88
    WD Black 2TB HD  $119

Continually edited to update shopping list as my plan changes and develops

Skip the ASrock and go Asus. Their bios GUI and features are top noch.
If it exist asus will support it first.

I did a search for "best X470 motherboard" and that one popped up on several sites, although if you look long enough, opinions are as many as there are reviewers.  It's really just a placeholder for an upper end motherboard to get a grasp on cost.  I don't O/C CPUs, so what I'll really be looking for is stable and reliable with a MFG that supplies firmware updates for several years with new optimizations and developments rather than a bios that has every little O/C tweak available.  In the interest of cost, I am looking at a smaller NVMe just for the system drive and a mechanical drive for storage.  A 1TB mechanical can be had for $50-60.

Edit:  Decided on 240GB NVMe drive for system and 2TB SATA III SSHD for storage.. updated shopping list above.

I just got the Ryzen 5 2600 with an Asus ROG Strix X470-I with the Phanteks Enthoo Shift X Mini ITX build. I have to say that I am so pleased with this build. Right now I'm using a GTX 960 and will upgrade soon enough to a better GPU for QHD gaming. First I want to get a better PSU and custom cables.

If you use my code let me know so i can thank you via pm.

Well, to give you an idea about performance, when I click "play" for Crew 2, it takes about 30 seconds for it to come up.  After that, no problem.  The 1080 keeps the frames maxed at 60.
