My lease is up in 30 days, and I want to get another Toyota Rav4 XLE. Go from 2018 to a 2021. I want to do payments to buy this time, but they haven't had the car in stock for a little while. I want to go to the same dealer. My family, and I have got cars from them more than a few times over the years. i wonder how much longer this chip shortage is going to last.    :/

If you are planning on buying a new car, the best time to buy is toward the end of the year during the holiday season. October is when the stock is discounted to make room for the next year models. Then comes Black Friday and the years end holiday deals.

I was hoping for a Memorial Day deal. Also my Lease is up in 30 days. I can't wait until the end of year.

 
The salesman called me earlier today, saying he had one, but he didn't know I didn't want the Hybrid edition. He knows I'm waiting on him to inform me when he gets the Non Hybrid in.

 
The salesman said they should get more in June. I hope he's right.

The problem also, of course, extends to replacement chips.  My neighbor's car needs a replacement ecu and his dealer has told him that he probably is looking at many months of back order.

Yep. If the chip in my current Rav4 goes bad, I'll have a hard time replacing it. Not good.

All the local dealerships lots are only half full around here. It's strange to see them so empty.

never buy a new car lol, especially with this chip shortage. On a somewhat related note, did you hear about how some people got in trouble for exporting vehicles to China for profit during the pandemic? 

 
I always get a good deal from them, since I have purchased from them before. Especially when I say, after going back and forth, that I don't think we will reach a compromise, start getting up to walk out, and then they usually give in.    ;)

Are cars on the same "return-to-normal" timeline approximately as GPU's right now, or is it worse?

Xray you could sit down with your salesman and do up a special order vehicle with the "exact" options you want. Toyota will happily extend your lease for a few months while you wait for your new one to arrive , win , win.  Just as long as the price is right and you are not leaving yourself exposed to warranty issues during your waiting period.   My wife had the same issue last fall while trying to find a new 4 Runner , she ended up with one a little more upscale than she wanted for the same money we were paying before.

Used truck prices are insane rn. I've been looking for awhile.

I've got filters/notifies set up with Carmax and Carvana.  I was hoping with the shortage my trade in value would go up significantly, but it's still only like $12-15k and the cars I'm looking at are in the $25k range.
 
The real thing is that I have no actual need for a new car, it's just kind of fun to shop.  I'd like a hatchback that's a little bit more peppy than my 2016 Mazda6 but that's really it.  I already have every other major feature I want and the car has no issues.  
 
If they could get the delta between my trade in and a new used car to like $5k, I'd probably pull the trigger.

Maybe this makes companies reverse the trend of putting chips into everything
