Saved up the past few years for my first sports car and this shortage drove up the price :(

Dealers are definitely struggling to keep cars on the lots so the prices are bonkers.

I have a few friends that run car lots. They all say the same thing, the chip shortage wile real is being blow out of proportion to cover up for synthetically upping car prices far more then what the chip shortage alone would cause. They all state that they are having a hard time selling new cars wile used cars fly off the lot and they can't get replacement used cars in fast enough. Makes since, all the user car lots around here are empty wile the lots that sell new cars are packed full of new cars and have little in the way of used cars.

Apparently now my riding mower needs a new chip and they don't have any available because of this shortage!

lol what, lawn mowers have chips now? that is crazy.

Off topic people. Let's get back on topic. We are talking about chips for cars here.

Chip shortage will probably last for at least 6 months in my opinion.

I am all for going back to cars with no electronics other than the radio and a few indicator lights. We save very little MPG with computers over a mechanical engineered solution. Hopefully they begin releasing retro vehicles.

May the Schwartz be with you!

Why do we even need to turn our cars into computers more powerful than gaming pcs? When did listening to spotifiy on your phone become so outdated? :)

My lease is up in 30 days, and I want to get another Toyota Rav4 XLE. Go from 2018 to a 2021. I want to do payments to buy this time, but they haven't had the car in stock for a little while. I want to go to the same dealer. My family, and I have got cars from them more than a few times over the years. i wonder how much longer this chip shortage is going to last.    :/

New silicon factories are supposed to open in Q1 2022. So until then chip shortage still be a thing.

You're probably right about that. But there's also the fact that as the pandemic is dying down, factories are starting to operate at capacity again and also demand for electronics will also reduce a bit as people start to go out more.

Update:

Went to my local Toyota dealer earlier today. I wanted the Rav4 XSE, dark blue. Was wayyyy over priced. They did take $3,000 off, but was still $40,000 after all the fees were added. Wife talked me into waiting until December or January, and try again. Maybe the 2021's will be discounted when the 2022's come in.

I hope so.

For information purposes, a couple of weeks ago I had my truck in for service at the dealer where I purchased it in 2015 and had an interesting conversation with the manager.  Here are some salient points:

1.  They are the largest GMC/Buick dealer in the region and their allocation per month is 10% of what they normally sold.

2.  They receive a listing of incoming allocated vehicles and within 24 hours they are all sold, weeks before they arrive.  I asked how many are financed and their response was only a couple per month.  There are no discounts except for a couple GM programs and the military discount program.

3.  Most do not have the upscale displays and systems.

4.  Used vehicles are not a deal, they are going for high prices.

5.  They do not know when things will improve and the only information they receive is "soon."  They are expecting shortages into next year even with the new model year.

So in some sectors, the situation is still very grim.

My intuition is that it will take years before we get back to the point where new cars were as readily available as they were just a couple years ago.  Let's say the chip problem was solved, well there are 1000's of parts on the car that they could be experiencing delays on, which slows that assembly line down.

On a side note to buying new cars, I recommend to all my doing a TrueCar search.  They send inquiries to all dealers around you, then the individual dealers send you offers, which you can then use as leverage against other dealerships to find who is willing to give the best deal. Ive purchased 2 new cars with this method. Anyhow good luck in the search.

Thanks for the info Flint. That car I wanted would have arrived in November. I could have bought it today. Almost did, even with that price. Changed my mind last moment. I did hear next year will be worse. Hopefully I didn't pass this up, just to regret doing that later..   :/

Hopefully it will improve in the next six months.  The auto industry is a major contributor in the economic engine of a lot of countries, including the US and I can see governments taking steps to direct resources to the industry.

The GMC dealer I use has only laid off their part time sales employees. The service and parts department are intact and, besides limited sales, their full time sales employees are doing other duties.  Apparently they promised their full time employees that no one would be laid off and thus far have kept that promise.

I bought my 2018 Volvo s90 with 35k miles for $22k before covid. I see them going for about $38-40k with like 60k miles these days. Mind blowing.

When I was looking at Rav4 PRIME's, there were online communities (Reddit for example) that had VIN trackers showing which dealers were getting what stock. That degree of information provides you significant leverage in the hunt. There's no reason to pay over stick for a 'stupid' Rav4, let alone any other vehicle. Look for a dealer will quote you for a factory order, and provide an invoice in writing with 'out the door' price inclusive of all dealer feels. Before the vehicle is built, they probably won't be able to give you a manroney sticker (federally mandated price sticker in every built vehicle) detailing line item for every feature and price, but you can get a good sense of what your option is with that dealer. Remember, MSRP still leaves profit for the dealer. An honest dealer will be happy for an easy sale on a factory order and will be less interest in playing games.

Don't be afraid of shop around and to give them a hard time. Dealers are making big money off of these vehicles, be as cutthroat to them as they are to you.

Mazda here in Japan just cancelled my, already paid for, order for a new CX-5. Ended up just going with a new engine for my current CX-5 as I can't afford to wait 3 more months and $10K sticker increase for the newest model to be made. Guess I'll hang onto my current car until things get back to normal in a couple of years.

around me the dealerships didn't even open for memorial day, which is usually a huge sales event.  the lots were all empty unless you wanted a $60k pickup truck/jeep.

I have been reading that people are buying out their vehicle when they come off lease (at a price that was set 3 years ago) and immediately selling on carvanna for big profits.

Took me a month to get my new Subaru Outback Premium. The higher trims won't be in till Dec. I have to admit..it's a big change from my 2012 Corolla, it had just a basic interface phone media. The Outback? Onboard sensors, voice command, media galore, hotspot, wifi...that month of waiting was just for the chips..lol.

Luckily I bought a car just over a year ago so I avoided it but it has hurt a few friends who are looking at a car. Unfortunately I recently had a friend have a seal in the engine go out and now they have to decide if they want to have the whole engine pulled to replace the seal on an older car or try to find something new in this market.

Luckily my old car exploded Jan'20 and I had a new CR-V by Feb, before all the supply chain problems started started.  Also, unknown supply chain parties are stock piling chips instead of passing them along as usual.
