I always thought it was something along the lines of crunching tasks being like eating cookies or crackers and "crunching" or chewing on them. "Nom nom" as a way of making a joke of it. Your CPU/GPU is chewing up tasks like Hungry Hungry Hippos. It's also similar to "Fold all the Proteins!" Don't know if that's true (didn't Afterburner set it up?) but a more descriptive name might be better to lure new teammates.
