Just a short and not so sweet message - One of my bigish iron folding cards, a 1070 GTX FTW (08G-P4-6276-KR) has given up it's grasp on the mortal coil this evening, as I fired up for the start of the month bulk run.  Not sure what killed it, but the card is completely dry (water loop) and I won't be able to look for scorching or swapping it into another slot until sometime this weekend as that requires me to remove the water loop and change the card back over to air for moving around to my other pc for full testing.  It was a second hand card gifted to me by one of you fine folders as a result of one of our folding contests (PLEASE forgive me for forgetting who it was! It's been a CRAZY last year and a half!). I can promise that it had a good home and did a LOT of good work while I had it.

So, for now, unless I CAN figure out how to save and resurrect it, I'm now down about 600k ppd for now.

If you drink, pour one out for a fallen card.

Sounds like it did a good job for at least two folders before it's death.

Unfortunately, it's just out of warranty (How's THAT for some monkey poo?) and we just don't have the money for me to pursue a replacement.

Yeah, this card was definitely worked hard, for sure. I'll make sure to give it a good go-over to ensure that it's not something I MIGHT be able to fix on my own (Those paths are VERY limited) before giving up this weekend. If not, it looks like I have a waterblock and possibly air cooler setup to put on e-bay.

It was a fine GPU, some say it gave it's all in a final effort to climb the mountain top of conquered core 22's. Alas, it was this effort that he shall be known as Captain Thirsty FTW!  Salute!

If you find that this card still works, you might want to look into the Arctic Cooling Accelero Extreme IV Heatsink / Fan Kit. I slapped one of these babies on my GTX 1070 last weekend, and it lowered temps down to ~49 degrees C. under full folding load. Caveat: the big heatsink for the opposite side of the card won't fit if you have an mATX motherboard, like mine .

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.

Re: Another card dies in the line of duty 2019/08/15 03:25:18 (permalink)
Oh, this card was watercooled, so I don't think it was thermal. Sadly, when we moved, I didn't have room in our vehicles to keep our pcs out of the storage units we used to ship (Uhaul pods) so they sat in Florida heat for a few weeks while we located this place and got our rental sorted.  I suspect that that long therm baking may have done something, or the move itself, the jostling. I did everything I could to stabilize and secure everything, but you just never know sometimes.

OR, it just could have been the poor card's time to go. *shrugs* It was a freebie given over by one of the generous members here that I got in one of our folding contests, so I'm only really out the time to disassemble and rebuild the WC loop to remove this card, plus a little lower folding numbers on average until I can figure out a replacement.

I WILL, however, keep that cooler in mind for my other box in the future.  Gotta love cooler temps no matter what. Oooooh! and it's a rear venter, too!

    Thanks for that info!

UPS has the card and it's on the way out west now. Just a waiting game at this point. Hoping they can tell me what actually went wrong and that the stupid thing doesn't simply decide that it's 'perfectly fine' after sitting in timeout for a week.

Is it just me or does anyone else yell at UPS tracking when something you're shipping or waiting for has arrived at the nearby UPS hub and then ages for a day? In this case, the video card is approx 30 to 45 minutes away from EVGA headquarters and UPS isn't delivering until tomorrow. *laughs* But this is me and my 'patience' I'm trying to show my kids as a good example.

That's pretty good. This is when I freak out. I'm home looking out the front porch at the road anticipating the arrival of that brown delivery van that never showed up yet. Then you get the text "Your package has been delivered, left on front porch".
    Whaaaaat!!! LOL

Ouch Turbo!! You might see me frantically run around my neighborhood glaring at all the front porches and knocking on doors. lol
I can relate D. Not to long ago I watched every update of a gpu and watched it zig zag from California to NY and arrive at my local PO.
Next update said in transit instead of out for delivery. Two days later it was scanned in El Paso, Texas,,,,,,,,,

LOL. My package/situation included a laptop. After talking to NewEgg customer service they had UPS backtrack my package and found it. Lucky for me the person they delivered to never opened the package.

The classic is when you KNOW something needs a signature so you basically set up an easy chair with drinks and a few sandwiches in easy reach RIGHT there at the door. In this case, it was the door nearest the street and to get to the other door, you HAVE to get by it. And I swear, there was one FedEx driver who would sneak around the back of the house to put the frigging 'delivery attempt made' sticky on that door EVERY friggin' time! "NO! I REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT! I WAS WATCHING EVERY APPROACH!!!"

Now we're on to the next stage - Delivery has happened. Resisting the urge to constantly refresh the RMA page waiting to see the process as it happens knowing that it COULD take up to 3 business days . . . "BUT IT SHOULD BE HAPPENING IMMEDIATELY! MY RMA IS SPECIAL!!!!"

The fun for me is waiting to see if it's another of the same card or if it's a different one based on what's available - I won't turn down an upgrade, for sure, but I just need to know if I'm stuck having to scrimp for a new water cooling block or just ordering a replacement set of the thermal strips to remount the same block. Also need to set aside some $$$ to get an Alphacool solution for my 2070. Apparently almost NO ONE is making blocks for the low end 2070.

Got the snipping notification from EVGA - They're shipping me back an identical card, so I don't have to replace that waterblock, just the kit to remount it (Thermal pads and as I was taking it apart, a couple of the washers look bad) so that'll be about $30 (Why does shipping have to cost so freaking much these days??) and I'm staring REALLY hard at my RTX 2070 and grumpy I don't have the $150 I need to get it under water as well, but you do what you have to, I suppose.

Now it's the waiting game. Will that card make it before the Hurricane?

Monday-Ish is what we're planning for, yeah.  Luckily, where we're at, we share the Utility grids with the local Emergency Services (Fire, Police, etc) and a training university for Public Safety, so we're in a sweet recovery spot should electricity be knocked out, so I have my fingers crossed we ride this out in style.

Keeping fingers crossed for PPCs as well - Got a good friend who works for them, so double good wishes that that area doesn't get TOO tossed around.

As a mental exercise to keep distracted as we wait, I've been poking at my current water setup and realizing I'd REALLY REALLY REALLY like to have my 2070 under water as well as the two other cards (Once the RMA returns, that is) so I can reduce the internal temps in the case and just dump all the heat out the radiator while folding.  To that end, I've put together a wishlist including the only compatible water block as well as a few bits and bobs that would help me finish out a much cleaner loop if any of you wonderful people are willing to give a Pimp a hand in finally getting this folding box completely liquified:

Thanks in advance if you can, and don't worry, I totally understand if you can't.  I wouldn't even be looking at this addition if EVGA hadn't stepped up and given me the RMA even after Warranty ran out, so an additional thanks to them!

That's good you can reused the original block. Saves a lot of $$

EK might make a block for the 2070, what part number is the card?
You have probably already checked though...  https://www.ekwb.com/configurator/waterblock/3831109813157

Here's the Corsair listing, I didn't know they had GPU water blocks.  https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Custom-Cooling/Blocks/GPU-Blocks/Hydro-X-Series-XG7-RGB-20-SERIES-GPU-Water-Block-%282070-FE%29/p/CX-9020008-WW#tab-gpu-compatibility
