Was expecting much stronger gaming performance and with some exotic cooling it may still be possible...... but at least we have an alternative to non-existent AMD 5000 parts. (Edit: nevermind looks like some AMD 5000 CPU's are in stock and at MSRP) Also for those out of the loop Rocket Lake tops out at 8 cores, this is due to it still being 14nm and a backport. https://www.anandtech.com/show/16535/intel-core-i7-11700k-review-blasting-off-with-rocket-lake A Comment on Gaming: Core LatencyUsers looking at our gaming results will undoubtedly be disappointed. The improvements Intel has made to its processor seem to do very little in our gaming tests, and in a lot of cases, we see performance regressions rather than improvements. If Intel is promoting +19% IPC, then why is gaming so adversely affected? The answer from our side of the fence is that Rocket Lake has some regressions in core-to-core performance and its memory latency profile. Conclusion Our results clearly show that Intel’s performance, while substantial, still trails its main competitor, AMD. In a core-for-core comparison, Intel is slightly slower and a lot more inefficient. The smart money would be to get the AMD processor. However, due to high demand and prioritizing commercial and enterprise contracts, the only parts readily available on retail shelves right now are from Intel. Any user looking to buy or build a PC today has to dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge their way to find one for sale, and also hope that it is not at a vastly inflated price. The less stressful solution would be to buy Intel, and use Intel’s latest platform in Rocket Lake.

vegajf51 but at least we have an alternative to non-existiant AMD 5000 parts. What the heck are you talking about ? Ryzen 5000 (except 5950x) are available in nearly all shops - except Amazon - in Germany.

Well honestly I haven't looked for anything but the 5950x at MSRP so maybe a bit out of the loop on that, as you are correct, just looked and amazon has the 5800x at MSRP In my defense, the review said the same thing so I am not the only one. LOL

Are these "exceptional" latencies intrinsic to the chip/architecture? Or can Rocket Lake still be salvaged with microcode updates? I'm very disappointed after reading this article. I was putting off my build for RKL, cognizant that it was a stopgap until Alder Lake. However this is just such an incredibly shamelessly stopgappy stopgap.

That's a good question though highly unlikely, it's just a symptom of the new architecture. I am sure Intel will refine it for alder lake but they pushed the skylake arch so hard and far that it does seem disappointing in comparison. AMD had latency issues with early Ryzen architectures too, going wider with more cache usually does sacrifice latency, but gains in other areas. In intel's defense gaming has always been their strongest area, its somewhat understandable that they sacrificed increasing in that area to be more competitive in others, especially with AMD be so competitive in HEDT and Server.

Looks like Microcenter has the Ryzen 7 5800X in stock in some stores and in the UK overclockers webstore there are 10 in stock. Until Intel can bring their die size down to 10nm or lower for their desktop CPUs I personally don't see any reason to recommend the Intel i7 11700k at this time.

I read that article - hard to believe that a new processor is actually WORSE in gaming than it's predecessor ... .. they say the 10700K is better gaming than this 11700K ... WOW .

Stock on the Ryzen 5600X / 5800X have become more consistent. 5900X and 5950X have been showing up more consistently now, too. AMD online has 5800X's in stock pretty regularly now.

Well it's certainly not what we were expecting as Intel's answer, however it's really not all that surprising considering the backporting and core latencies incurred. For those of you that looked at only a few of the graphs, the 11700K is overall faster than a 10700K by something like 2% if all game tests are considered then averaged out. Not exactly earth shattering but faster none the less. I think Hardware Unboxed did a good summarization piece on it in that they say you won't be able to tell the difference in games if you are on AMD or Intel platform. That's something I can attest to now as a matter of fact. If I were to invite you over for a blind taste test and asked you to tell the difference between my Intel i9 10850K system and my Ryzen 5900X system in games, you wouldn't be able to. It really just doesn't matter anymore as long as you have a current gen Intel or AMD platform there is virtually no difference in games in real world tests.

Good points there, most won’t be able to tell the difference between 140 and 160 FPS, so long as there isn’t any weird throttling. All the game results are close with current gen chips.

The chip was obtained at retail. A retailer has been selling them for over a week now. Says that on the first page.

Bios won't make much if any difference, the 11900k will be a bit better since it clocks higher but honestly they are just flat behind in IPC. Alder lake will go up against Zen 4 which is supposedly more cores and another large IPC boost(R20 single-core 700+ large). Intel just needs to put its head down and get to work.

Well, I guess we’ll find out in about a month if the right BIOS doesn’t matter. History would show BIOS makes a pretty big difference for both Intel and AMD especially on newer chips so I’m a little skeptical to buy that.

Yeah I‘m not sure what that argument is about lol. The new AMD processors are pretty good on new titles. I haven’t heard much about the weird stutter issues that some of the old amd stuff had issues with. Mostly probably just people needing to take extra care from a setup standpoint.

Thanks for the tip, bcoz i won't get amd they used old games to sell new processor, so intel is best for gaming.
Um what? Quite possible the dumbest argument I've heard yet.
Well it’s not an argument tho.
Yes it is, by definition, in a debate; like in a discussion in a forum.
ASRock Z77 • Intel Core i7 3770K • EVGA GTX 1080 • Samsung 850 Pro • Seasonic PRIME 600W Titanium My EVGA Score: 1546 • Zero Associates Points • I don't shill

Daviddswenson Also states they know they aren’t using the proper release BIOS.
Aye, but it's still the BIOS versions mainboard makers provided for the actual review samples they also have. A BIOS update may help tune the memory subsystem but it's unlikely Intel will have any microcode updates to change the processor itself. What neither Anandtech nor Hardware Unboxed has mentioned so far is Intel's paradoxical design strategy. Rocket Lake features AVX-512.... but why? Alder Lake reportedly doesn't have it. But it doesn't really matter if ADL has it or not, because either one of two things is going to happen. Either AVX-512 is going to be adopted and then dropped in a single generation, or Intel will keep it on ADL and waste all the die space it gained from using those little cores. So either way, Intel seems to be flailing around making nonsensical choices again. Intel wouldn't have launched something that was a performance regression if ADL was just a few months away, so it seems like ADL will be 2022 after all. For Intel's sake I hope those higher cache and core-coherency latencies aren't present in ADL. Intel has always had issues with cross-core communication, and ADL's 8+8 design is going to really complicate that.
Have water, will cool.
