If you have ever heard the Altec Lansing ACS48 2.1 system, then you know what I  mean when I say: These are the BEST PC SPEAKERS EVER!.

OK then..!     I know it's been many YEARS since these were released, but this is VERY IMPORTANT!  I have a set of these and do not ever' want to let them go... (they are and always will be the best PC speaker set ever made)  My issue is this:    the 3.5 plug from the LEFT speaker(into the RIGHT speaker) has gone bad.(the jack itself) I have attempted to hard-wire the jack into the RIGHT speaker, but not that easy! The speakers are some type of "common ground serial stereo" wiring that I am not familiar with. There is 2 wires from the LEFT speaker, a GREEN wire from the primary DIN wire that leads to the sub, and a GROUND that comes from the volume control PCB that is INSIDE the RIGHT speakers.   My questions is: How/Where do these wires go for me to hard-wire the LEFT speaker into the RIGHT speaker "and" have LFET/RIGHT SPEAKERS!   I can wire them to work together, but there is NO R/L.  It ends up being MONO!  Thats OK, but not good enough for someone that plays games and listens to music alot.     Please help! These are  THE  Altec ACS48's!!!  They can not go down!

After looking at your picture that you have. This is how i would start out  speaker (-)"B" to black wire"B". and the aqua blue wire "A" and speaker wire (+)"A" to PCB "A"

Thank you for your reply, but I dont quite follow. OR, I think I tried it already....   -/+ wires from LEFT speaker going to the PCB-black wire and the green wire do not create ANY sound from the LEFT speaker. Sound will only come from RIGHT speaker.                           It's really a pain what I got here....

Nah, J/k. That cfg actually turns the volume down all the way. Thats all. Thanks, tho. Got any more ideas?  Can a LEFT SIDE of the AMP go out? I would think it wouldnt play at all if the amp went out all.
Here are a few other pics of pcb, and 3rd pic is how I can wire them so the LEFT plays, but obviously plays as a second RIGHT speaker.   I just cant find the left side config!

Regardless, good luck with your fix!

On the far left or that fat solder point towards the middle? That one is the Black "ground" wire. The far left one would connecting to nuthin, its not linked on the pcb.

Meh, IMO if it were me I probably wouldn't bother fixing an old system like that... if you're a fan of 2.1 speakers, I'd recommend this set: http://www.amazon.com/Kli...-Speaker/dp/B000062VUO

Sorry to get completely off topic, I just had to share my burst of thoughts before they explode inside me You can't beat Klipsch for sound quality and quantity!! Power, Detail, Emotion... baby!!

You know, I think ya'll are right.   At this point, I think its time to let them go.   This is very sad to me, as I have had them since new... 1997.  Yes, thats right. These poor bastards have had to reproduce sounds from NIN to New Order, from Ministry to DJ Majik Mike. And of course, the ill'est of ill- the Beastie Boys.
Thanks for your input. I'll go check that 5.1 system, start looking at some Klipsch systems, and I have to go dig a hole in my back yard for a proper burial.    Thanks again.....

I would say pitch them, not because they are beyond repair, but to be honest, back in 1997, they had plenty of speaker systems that could out-perform altec lansings lineup for half the money.

When everyone was still buying Altec for the brand name, I was buying components and building my own sound system rather than buying pre built computer speakers. For the price of those systems you could build something five times better.

With that said, you would be surprised at how far audio technology has advanced since 1997...you can buy a set of computer speakers for $30 new now that can reproduce what a set of $80 speakers could do just 10 years ago.

If I was you, if you have a digital computer graphic equalizer program that you can watch your music play through, find out where the frequency ranges are of the music you listen to, and find out the ranges of the speakers you are looking at buying. There is nothing more disappointing than buying a really nice set of speakers that sound great in the store and have a usable frequency range down to 80hz, bringing them home, and finding out most of your favorite music has bass drops in the 40hz range.

And thats how I'd prefer to do it, components. But time/money/life puts something like that waaay back on the prio' list.  Back in the day, you couldnt SHOW me a better set of speakers than MB Quart.(for car stereo)  Now they sell at Target and cheaper ones sound just as good.
The the sub-100 frequency response of this old set of cones is what made me hold onto them. The sub is a 6.5" in a real wood box. And no small enclosure, I might add. Their range was excellent. If the sub was positioned right, the resonance could fill any room.
But now that you mention it, now would be a good time to break these down and build exactly what I want for my primary rig. Speakers are still, sub and amp are still good. I think I'll go grab an inexspensive pair of satelites and do some "real good" for myself.
    You sir, have inspired me.

Don't get me wrong... the Altec Lansings were great speakers... much better than the junk they make today. Don't toss them! Keep them around. But I was just suggesting newer and better speakers. Klipsch is my #1 choice because of their quality. I also like Bose (except for their steep price tag). Stay away from Logitech speakers though, I just think they are poorly made... muddy sound, boomy bass, nonexistent mid range/mid bass etc.

What about these? Anyone ever HEARD them before?

I grabbed the twins here off theBay, ($10.00, cant lose)for thier slim size and volumeknob/headphonejack/subwooferjack in the back.    Plan is to build new small enclosures for these and the Altec satelites for mids/highs on the desk. And use the Altecs 20-watt amp side for them and then leave the subs on the floor with thier own 40-watt amps pushing them. I actually have a 2nd sub somewhere in the house - I acquired it some years back. Could have been a decade ago...  seriously.
It will be hard to jugle the time to build it up, but I'll post pics here so you guys can check out my SLAMMIN LOUD pc stereo system!    Now if I could only find the tech-specs on the amps in the Altecs, I'll be in business.

From the looks of it, the drivers on those speakers look like 1 to 2 inch "full range" drivers, which is most likely gonna make the highs and mids production very muddy, ESPECIALLY when turned up. Kinda like the drivers used on the Logitech LS21 system. Personally I can't stand speakers without a dedicated tweeter for the highs and a mid bass driver for the vocals and warm mids. But then again, for $10 you really have nothing to lose...

What do you mainly use your speakers for? Music? Movies? Games? What types of music? Bass heavy? Treble heavy? Lots of vocals? Action movies? Drama? Talk shows? etc etc etc etc............ too much to list. It really depends on what you use your speakers for and the demands, for most mainstream users there's no need to go overkill, as long as you can hear what's going on... right?

I still say that for price to performance ratio, you can't beat the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system in the PC audio line. If you're willing to spend a bit more, dump the PC audio and get home theater speakers. Ever since I made the jump from PC speakers to a full blown 5.2 home theater setup I never looked back (displayed in my Mods Rigs btw )

Then again, I apologize once more for speaking from a "stereophile" POV... I hope you enjoy your setup! Post a vid if you wanna show how loud they can bump

You speak so highly of these, I'm gonna have to find a set to listen to.

And dont get me wrong, I like the fact that your "speaking from a stereophile POV".   Thats the point of asking a question, ASK a PRO! Right?

The Altec have a small tweater in them. Im a midrange to low frequency listenter, so I figure, in pairs: 2-tweaters, 4-mids, 2-mid/lows, 2-subs.   I'f I cap those tiny speakers in the Creatives somewhere around 2-300Hz, with a decent hpf cross, I should be able to keep them from getting too torn-up at high levels.

The Subs are the best point about the Altecs. Here is a really good write-up them from back in the day...  if you can read russian ----->  http://www.ixbt.com/multimedia/altec-asc48.shtml

OMG, look at the curve on the sub!   I told you guys they were good.  Its solid all the way to 30Hz. Awesome.

    Two words: Parts Express

If you want to keep the amplifier of those speakers and can repair any wiring issues and want to build your own, shop for driver upgrades...keep in mind though, you will need to do ALOT of research to find good drivers that will match, because most likely, the box your speakers were in were designed around the driver to make the speaker they used sound the best.

As far as new speakers go, sure the newer stuff is built with plastic and particle board, but it doesn't change the fact that technology has massively improved in 10-20 years. If you spent enough money on the best speakers and tube amplifier you could find/build 40 years ago, you can still give the latest digital technology a run for its money or beat it(providing your system is working well and the drivers are in good shape). However, saying that your $5,000 stereo from '71 can beat a $800 stereo from today still isn't saying much(when you consider how much $5,000 was back then).

Most of the time, if you take a cheap pair of speakers, pull out the drivers, replace the crossovers/capacitors with higher quality parts, line any plastic or particle board with fiberglass resin or another strengthening/dampening material, and then use some acoustic dampening poly fiber fill, you will end up with a set of $50 speakers that can blow away speakers that cost 3 times as much. If you really want to go the distance, you can replace the weakest drivers in the system(usually the subwoofer) with higher quality drivers, and end up with a cheap system that will eat a pre packaged speaker system costing 10 times more.

P.S. If you really want to fix those Altecs, let me know, you are wiring it wrong, and that is why they are going mono.

If you have a Best Buy anywhere near you they should have the ProMedia 2.1 system on the shelves. Demo the hell outta it!

I indeed look up to people who do these small projects to fix/upgrade existing hardware, so I'll definitely stay tuned to what you do next! As for myself, besides PCs I usually buy everything else just the way they are and make no modifications to them. But don't be surprised if I start building my own subwoofers in the future... picture custom built 18" monster subs with giant ported enclosures and thousands and thousands of watts

Impressive frequency vs dB chart you have there! I'd say it's quite impressive for a system like that. BUT I can't resist and must show off the same chart provided by my subwoofer's manufacturer

This is a stock/unmodified subwoofer too! Sorry I had to show off

That   is   friggin       AWESOME ! !
So how BADA$$ does that sound TWO HOUSES DOWN?? Granted, I know people that store meat in refidgerators smaller than that, but it would make a nice seat. Does it?
The sub from these guys is only about MAYBE 1/4 the square of that thing...  but I'm glad to know my 14 year old sub has impressed someone TODAY.

Requital, I would be forever grateful if you could point me in the right direction. Thats the point of this post, but there is some type of serial stereo output I just cannot figure out.  Any help would be great.   What do you suggest?

LOL not exactly a nice seat but a good place to put a pot of plants on... that is, if you want it to fall to the floor within 2 minutes of some bass heavy action movie (U-571, Tron Legacy, Expendables, anyone?)

Oh yeah, bassy Rap music can really drive my neighbors insane... good thing I'm considerate, I even offered to hang their pictures back on the walls this one time LOL

It's not the end of it though, along with this I also have a Klipsch Synergy Sub 12 on the other side of the room, so a 5.2 system pretty much, it evens the bass out in the room by A LOT (reduces dead zones), and whenever I feel I want the cops to visit my place........... well you know what I mean

So, here is what I would suggest...put the wires back to their factory configuration. After everything is back where it was, check to see if the 3.5mm plug for the satellite speaker is a mono or stereo plug.

Test the plug to see if the plug is out or if that channel of the amplifier has failed. If you can wiggle the plug and get it to work, or touch the speaker wires to the circuit board on the back of the 3.5mm jack to the speaker and get get sound out of that channel, then simply order a 3.5mm jack or hard solder the wires in.

What I see in those pictures is a mess. If you wire a common ground, you share an audio channel. Before trying to hardwire anything, it is best to know if the jack is bad or if the amp is blown before I spend any more of our time on a set of old speakers :D

    @Requital
You do realize this thread is very old.

That said. I own a pair of these, and you like I can open them up check out how they are wired so the original poster northgalocal can fix his (if he kept them). The ACS-48's are truly awesome. I got these back in the 1990's and now my 15 year old son uses the hell out of them. They are loud, crsip and clean. The bass is thumpin hard and they are turned down to about 50%.

Someone above said that speaker technology has come a long way in the past 10-20 years. If so, it is hard to find it, especially without spending a fortune. Nothing I have bought in the last 20 years can touch the stuff I bought 30+ years ago. I have a set of Bose 901's I got in the very early 1980's that kick ass and sound as good as they did back then. Of course they are hooked up to a 250watt RMS, 500watt Peak Onkyo amp and pre-amp with the Bose controller between them. I also have a pair of Bose 301's in my living room I got in the mid 1980's that get comments from nearly everyone that walks into my living room as to how great they sound. They are on a cheap Technics receiver I actually picked up at the local recycling center (literally in the dumpster) a few years back and repaired it. I have friends with modern very high end systems and I am not impressed by the "new" technology. maybe they can make them cheaper today, but there is little made today that can even come close to the quality of things made 30+ years ago. Everything I see in the stores is crap and designed to barely outlast their warranty. I drive the piss out of my Bose 901's and they just beg for more, even 30 years later.
