Ok,

I think I am all set up I installed on WCG on 2 computers.  (setup username polarbeardj and team [link=mailto:crunching@evga]crunching@evga[/link]).
Installed BoincView and see both computers, now I guess I wait to see how things go?  I read through the stickies and
was a bit overwhelmed honestly, but I will eventually get it down.  Especially knowing that there is a good group of crunchers
here to help.

Feel free to chime in with tips or ideas of what I may need to still do, all help to get up and running properly is appreciated.

Don't try to learn it all in one day. Take it one project at a time.
You will pick up things as you go along. I've been doing this for a few years now and still learning things.
Some things you do not need to know, or may only use once in a while.
There are many threads where we did a project of the month or a challenge that have all kinds of good info.
Do a search and the thread will come up and most of the time an answer is right there.

app_config and cc_config files are files that tell a computers hardware what to do. IE: like run 2 task per GPU not just one
Or use all GPUs and so forth.
It's not that bad really, just ask if in doubt.

You know guys, we really need an updated guide with tips and tricks in one concise thread.
How to make an app_config and where it goes......
If project x will not upload add this line to the cc_config ..........

    Thanks for the replies.

I have my GPUs folding so will be crunching mainly with CPU.  I have one computer that I may try some GPU crunching on
when I get the internet at that location sorted out.

So is BAM a replacement for BoincView, or are they different things all together?

"So is BAM a replacement for BoincView, or are they different things all together?"
No, different things all together. Once Setup you add new Project to your Project Collection.
It then goes out to the Project and setup your account. So you use the same lower case email address password and user name.
You would then manage what host run what project and select use of CPU and or GPU and so on
I have never used BoincView. (
BoincView can monitor and control all your BOINC clients throughout your network. Every client can be managed via the client's remote control feature.)
I get to each computer to manage them for the most port.
If I have to manage a computer from remote so to speak I Remote Desktop to one of my computer that is NOT using the GPU for BOINC or Folding. From their I use BOINC Client and Click "New BOINC Manager window..."

Then you use the password Key use in this file on each computer... Their is a lot more to this.
In the folder ProgramData\BOINC the file  gui_rpc_auth.cfg and inside this file is your password key.
Looks like this ac2dad6db8a3dfeaccd0c3274dfb15ad and this is the password you use.

Sorry it take me longer to write in Posts....Most all of this is also in the Help.

Reading through this Area of the Forum you will see what we do and what settings we use and so on.
You cannot Fold on the GPU and Run BOINC GPU Tasks at the same time, even if you have more than One GPU installed.

I use BoincTasks as a lot of my computers and servers do not have a keyboard, mouse or Monitor.
I can see all my computers, after setting the password, IP address in BoincTasks, I can see and control everything on my main computer.

On each computer you need to add a shortcut to have it run,

Then I see all my computers like this.

    Hope this helps

    Welcome to the team PBJ.
I've been here a long time and just learned something new about remote access. Even old fossils can learn new tricks.

Yep, I am glad that we have some responsive people around to help point out the path.
Stumbling through the forums is definitely good as I believe you learn better when you have to work to figure something
    out.

But a little direction to find the critical base information to focus on is also a plus.

No need to worry about me trying to learn to much to fast.  I started teach yourself C++ in 24hours 2.5 years ago and havent got
to the end yet.  (I have short bursts of good focus sometimes lol)

I have it setup to advanced view, been messing with computers long enough now I prefer to have access to everything even if I wont be messing with it.

I have 3 computer setup now and have another Laptop thats been collecting dust that will hopefully be updated and online by tomorrow.

I setup BAM, now I think I will just let my WCG projects run and earn some badges while I work on taking in information and formulating a plan on what
    projects interest me.

    Great to hear

This is where you setup and create a Banner like the one below. http://signature.statseb.fr
Remember lower case email address and user name here as well. On the above site you use your user name to create an account and the same email as what you used on WCG and all other BOINC Projects.

That number in the upper right corner (148) is set by User of the Day UOD and comes from Projects that you have setup a Profile.
Without creating a Profile on a BOINC Project no one can vote for you so you would not see this number go up.

Keep a good eye if going to use a laptop. They tend to over heat, not many of use use a laptop.
Several of us have multi-socket servers got get the best bang for the buck.
There is a ton of good hardware selling on ebay for pennies on the dollar.
What really gets expensive is the electric bill. Several of us use the computers to heat our houses in the Fall/Winter.
Then we cut back in the Spring/warmer weather.

I have temperature monitoring going.  I am really not to concerned if I burn up that laptop as it has just been collecting dust for about a year now.
I figured if it ends its life doing something good it was not wasted lol.

As far as electric goes, I dont have to worry about that currently as its included in my fixed rent amount.  Soon when I decide to buy a new house (and
am more familiar with crunching) I will look into more efficient equipment if I want to put more resources to work.

    Nice!
It's good to see you get the big slice of pie. When will break into the top hundred? Note the point dif in WCG and FREE-DC?

Next year you should be hooked and completely dependent on distributed computing!
Next year's Formula BOINC race should be awesome too.

I had not even looked at the Free DC page yodap, I should be in the top 100 on that page in about 17 days if I do nothing but WCG projects.
Why do I need to wait till next year to be totally hooked, .
I had read somewhere about the points differences so have just paid attention to days credit for badges at WCG.

I just want to mention that running a few computers 24/7 will run up the electric bill.
It compounded in the warmer months when you have to run the A/C so it is not 100f in the house.

He doesn't have to worry about the electric until the landlord catches wind of what he's doing.

Yep, But its an RV.  I currently live in here in TX, And me being from Alaska I keep the AC on all year long until it gets down to 50 at least.
So they may not notice the 1 computer I have running there.  The other 2 are at an offsite location where I dont have to worry one way or another.

I will have to have a plan before I bring to many online however.
