Hi guys, I am looking to upgrade my current rig which I built from 2009. I'm on a EVGA x58 ftw running a i7 3.2 6core 16gb memory. I am looking to upgrade either to the x99 or the z270. I know both run different processors, but I am wondering if the 1151 will be on par with a 2011-v3 presently? I do heavy photoshop editing and game often... so will the 2011-v3 suffice and last me the same amount of years as my 1366 or is there more of a future for the 1151? Thanks for your suggestions/advice in advance! -g

How many GPUs are you planning on using ? How much RAM can the software take advantage of - "heavy photoshop editing" ? Is M.2 fast as possible, a deal breaker ? if Yes, then Z270

2011-v (X99) replacement LGA 2066 (X299) suppose to be released 2H of 2017. It all depends on how much you want to spend and how soon you want to build it. Do you edit photos professionally, where time is money? If not you might be fine with Z270 system. I think ASUS, MSI and GIGABYTE are better for gaming, they seem to give you better audio software features than other mfg do. I just upgraded from i7-920 X58 to Z270 system earlier this month. I don't do any photo editing or video encoding.

What was your experience -- did you see a big improvement --- using the same GPU and different MB & RAM ?

Both X99 and Z270 (i7 only) will give you the performance you require for photo and video editing. What it really comes down to is the amount of PCIE lanes and resources you will need from the CPU and feature set of the motherboard. Also, do you plan to overclock?

I noticed a big difference. I went from i7-920 (2.6ghz) to i7-7700K (4.2ghz), also went from normal HDD to m.2 SSD PCIe NVMe.

The SSD does make a BIG difference (over mechanical drive) in how responsive the PC acts. My old X58 MB - OC the i7-950 to 4.2 GHz, so ...... Did you see better gaming / frame rates ? which games

The only game i been playing lately is Rust. I can notice a big difference in it. The only time i see fps spikes now is when the game is loading a big compound (base) with lots of people around it. That kind of load lag was reduced a lot.

Ahhh this has been moved twice and sorry for the delay for some reason I never got notifications on this. I have two evga 950's I plan on upgrading them sometime this year to hybrid water cooling. Well from my current memory configuration when I work on billboard size files (around 2gig) size .psb my system slows down considerably. When I play games is seems fine expect when I get random video lag spikes. I plan on doing video editing this year as well. I don't mind the costs, but I'd like to keep it decently priced. I was actually looking at the the i7-6800k 15M 6core 3.4ghz if i went with the x99.

I never overclock. I just want to be able to do heavy photo editing and some heavy gaming, and last me quite awhile like my current system has.

Nobody has mentioned Ryzen will be released on March 2nd? We will soon have the benchmarks and trust me they will be solid. It will be way better money spent. You're talking 8c/16t vs 4c/8t. Intel has been price gouging for way too long tbh.

Is it true that Ryzen will only support Window 10 like the Intel's Sky Lake or is it Intel's "Kaby Lake"?

It would appear it only supports W10 "officially". But that answer is kind of ambiguous to me... "AMD confirmed that it has tested and validated Ryzen on Windows 7, but that it won’t officially support the OS." and "At this point, AMD has “verified”, or tested, that a Windows 7 PC powered by Ryzen will boot. But will it take advantage of all of Ryzen’s capabilities? That seems less likely." http://www.pcworld.com/article/3167279/computers/amd-sorry-there-will-be-no-official-ryzen-drivers-for-windows-7.html

You have the FTW you can drop in a hexcore xeon w3680, it is an unlocked hexcore CPU that is unlocked. 4-4.3ghz is not an uncommon overclock. There are X5660 on ebay for under 50$, they are hexcores but are only BCLK unlocked. They too are an easy 4-4.2 ghz OC. Use a SSD for the OS and you will think you bought a new computer. The 6 cores and 12 threads will help with rendering. Use the money you save to buy a new GPU GTX1070 or 80.

I haven't gone AMD in such a long time. The only time i ever used it was when I was rendering 3d animation stuff for school, lol. Yeah, I kind of hate being stuck to an OS with a processor...I definitely do not want to go to W10 yet. So, what's the verdict? Wait it out or go with the x99?
