OK.  I have found the sweet spot for my CPU.  7820X is solid and stays relatively cool at 4.6 GHZ at 1.17v.  That is with static voltage.  I want the CPU to power down when Idle and not stay at 1.17 all the time...is there a setting in Adaptive.  My bios starts at 1.200 adaptive.  How do I adjust it down???

Thanks

It does not go below 1.2v because generally speaking X299 is not stable below 1.2v. What are you using to test stability?

AIDA64, Prime and Cinebench 20.  Right now...CPU set at 4.6 and 1.172 and it is stable and doing well.

What kind of AVX offsets are you running? I don’t have that particular CPU, but I am struggling to see it stable at that frequency and voltage under load. Maybe you got lucky.... Try running OCCT (run the OCCT test) for an hour, see if it will pass that.

    For perspective I have my 9800x running;
    - CPU Multiplier of x44 with a Mesh Ratio of x29
    - AVX2 Offset of 0 and AVX512 Offset of 1
    - CPU VIN, 1.800v
    - VCORE, 1.200v
    - VMESH, 1.000v

Those voltages are basically stock voltages for the CPU, if I increase the multiplier I would have to increase voltage for stability. If you are able to run 4.6GHz at what is essentially an under-volt of 1.172v than you have some really good silicon or a chilled CPU, lol.

Those are some pretty high AVX Offsets for such a low voltage, IMO. I am going to guess that you were getting high temperatures in Prime95 which is why you are using those offsets? My suggestion would be to avoid Prime95 as it applies an un-realistic AVX load on the CPU. The truth is there are not a ton of applications out there that use AVX instructions and the ones that do, thus far are not applying loads anywhere near what is seen in Prime95. I would suggest using OCCT for CPU stress testing and only using Prime95 if you plan on participating in the GIMPs program. The paid version of OCCT offers the ability to run there in house CPU stress test using either no AVX, AVX, AVX2, or AVX512 instruction sets. Also un-like the 24 hours of testing required by Prime95 OCCT does the job in 1 Hour with most errors typically being discovered within the first 15 minutes of testing.

Changed my offsets for AVX back to 3, which is default for the board.  Downloaded OCCT.  No errors...highest temp was core 3 at 68C during the run.

Re: Adaptive setting for CPU on X299 FTW K 2019/11/03 05:20:21 (permalink)
Nice! One thing to keep in mind is that you need to run tests like OCCT x3 times; once with AVX disabled, once with AVX2 only, and once with AVX512 only. This is the only way to ensure stability across all instruction sets.

Another thing worth checking on is the TJMAX temperature set by the mother board. I have not used the X299 FTW K, but can tell you that the X299 Dark does not set the correct TJMAX value, at least for the 9800x, and this results in temperature readings via applications\BIOS to be incorrect. Depending on what the value is currently set to it could be resulting in temperature readings that are actually cooler or hotter than what you think. The Intel Core i7-7820x has a TJMAX value of 99C, you can use HWInfo64 to see what the current value is set to. After installing and running HWInfo64 right click on any of the CPU Core temps and select "adjust tj max" the value that is initially displayed is the value that the mother board has it set to. If that value does not read 99C than you will need to check in the BIOS to see if you can manually configure it to the correct value. If you are not able to change it within the BIOS you can change the value within HWInfo64 however keep in mind that this will only adjust the value within that one application and all other applications will still read incorrect values.

As a side note its generally not recommended to exceed 80C with X299 due to the instability that comes with the higher temperatures.

Found my TJMAX was set to 105.  Under advanced menu...on X299 FTW K, you can adjust TJMAX under CPU settings.  Now 99.  When I first purchased the 7820X, I spoke with a few people that recommended keeping the voltage of the chip under 1.20, which would help control temps on the chip.  I have rarely seen 80C.  I have been toying with the chip a bit more lately.  Normally, I kept it at 4.3 GHZ and voltage on AUTO.  Usually saw top temps in the 70's....hit 80C a few times...but rare.  Now locked voltage at 1.72 and see low to mid 70's.  All in all...seems to be working fine.  Thanks for the tips...

AVX512 test...never saw temps over 77C.  ACX2, saw a few spikes where a few cores hit 85C (momentarily) but never sustained...back to 75-78C range.  No AVX Momentary spike on core 2 of 84C but lasted a second. or two...gone.    Core 3/5 maxed at 82C for a moment.  99% of the time, cores in low to upper 70's (most consistent range 73-77).  No errors in any run thus far.  Reported voltage 1.18

Hi bobmitch, do you mind posting your overclock settings in bios? I have the same board and cpu and trying to overclock mine. Thanks in advance!
