Thought I'd ask my fellow EVGA Forum members for their experience, thoughts & recommendations on Brands and review sites

So,  my 4 year old Yamaha RX-A820 is acting up - no sound output till "warm".

Seem to take about ten minutes for it to "warm up" before I get sound to the speakers, been slowly getting worse - no idea why.

This unit has always sat behind an APC brand UPS to get clean power and no surges.

I'm looking for a new AV receiver; I've done some basic Google searches

Features that I want:
1) HDMI 2.0a in/out
2) 5.1 or 7.1
3) 4K Ultra HD & HDR
4) HDCP 2.2
5) <$600
6) built-in wireless would be nice to have

I'm currently looking at:

Sony STRDN1080 7.2 Channel Dolby Atmos Home Theater AV Receiver

Denon AVR-X2300W 7.2 Channel Full 4K Ultra HD AV Receiver with Bluetooth

Denon AVR-X3300W (sale price $599)

Getting ready to push the button - buy the Denon X3300W

Who would you by from ?

Crutchfield - free two day shipping and 60 day return window ($10 fixed return shipping cost)

OR

Amazon Prime - shipped by Amazon - sold by - ListenUp

I found mine at goodwill for $20 and I've had it for about 3 years now. It's a Sony STR-K502. Definitely not what your looking for but I found it interesting that being from good will that it has lasted this long.

If you wanted to repair your current receiver, I would recommend replacing all of the electrolytic capacitors inside and also replace any other type of high voltage capacitor you find inside; even if it isn't electrolytic.  It usually doesn't cost much in the grand scheme of things and odds are that the issue will then be resolved.

Otherwise, another method of troubleshooting is to spray -- only the low voltage components inside -- with an upside-down can of air duster in order to freeze components and locate a component which has a temperature-related failure.

Odds are, though, that your issue is just a failing capacitor or set of capacitors and the air duster troubleshooting method would prove inconclusive.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

    Details about this RX-A820 "issue"

Cold start, in "Radio mode" - I get sound quickly, 2 minutes -- only IF -- I use "Purer Direct" Mode

---> however in any other mode NO sound till it "warms up"  Then it all works fine - all day and night and on restart as long as it does not get "too cold"

If I select "TV" viewing and use "Purer Direct" Mode ---> NO sound till it "warms up" (takes about 9 to 10 minutes)

I've tried many of the (7) HDMI inputs with no change and Both HDMI output; also tried total reset to factory default

When I bypass the RX-A820 everything else works, however the TV speakers are not as nice as the stereo speakers

Get this unit for 550, even has stuff you didn't know you wanted.
The amp is solid and the Dac(s) does a pretty good job too.

I work in AV and we used Marantz before we replaced our "low end" gear with Integra.
And by low end I jusy mean its not rotel, classé, or anything over 2k.

Which one, how old is it ?

I've not found any good review sites, especially on how long they should last.

Not very happy with the Yamaha having issues in year 4, not at that price range & protected by a UPS its whole life

Exactly why I'm Not looking at another Yamaha AV Receiver, not a good experience - previous tuners I've had for much longer, I gave away to family still working as new.

I am happy that I bought it on sale at the time for (50% of MSRP) but the Sony it replaced (didn't have HDMI) I gave to my brother and it is still going strong

My only concern with the Integra is that they are owned by Onkyo and Onkyo's reputation for reliability has been less than stellar.

Thanks Tweaked, confirms what I've seen about Onkyo

Seems Denon has a following here on the Forums

    Looking @  Denon AVR-X3300W  ($599 sale price)

    Amazon Denon AVR-X3300W
Fulfilled by Amazon -- unfortunately not sold by Amazon --- do not recognize any of these vendors

Crutchfield and B&H have the same price

Trying to decide how much of the specs is marketing hype and how much really matters in how it sounds

But it is covered by Amazon Prime.
I would check with ListenUp as an authorized seller for Denon

Personally speaking, I picked up a Sony STR-D1060N for $160 in January (open boxed and clearanced), and it is an awesome receiver. More capability than I need right now but I'm very happy with it. I would say the Sony are worth keeping in mind, but if it would be the same price bracket I would vote for Denon over the Sony.

    Thanks Halo

Denon AVR-X3300W ($599) --- vs---  Sony STRDN1080 ($598)  ---> close price last search -- not looking at reconditioned

Want clear sound for daily TV (comcast) and Blue-ray movies

Denon X3300W  (lower models do not have the 4K 60hz Up-Scaling)
"4K Ultra HD/60hz full rate pass-through with HDR, bt.2020, 4:4:4 pure Color support
    with full HCDP 2.2 support. 4K/60hz Up-Scaling"

Next TV will be 4K, however Comcast does not support that resolution -- why I'm looking hard at the Up-Scaling feature

Sony STRDN1080, does not specify the hz of their unit (Crutchfield says 60Hz)
"6-in/2-out HDMI connectivity with 4K/60p (4:4:4)5 pass-through, HDCP 2.2 support, and HDR support"

Dolby® ATMOS and DTS:X ---> Not a required feature for me - Probably Never use them (overhead sound effects)

So, I'd love to find a better Value (Save some $$$) receiver as long as the 4K is well supported especially Up-Scaling

I bought a Denon AVR-S720W last November for HDR. It's a cheaper one and doesn't do upscaling, but it's been great. I had a Denon AVR-X2100W before this one and never had issues with that one either. The only reason I had to buy a new one was for HDR.

I use mine for XBox One S (4k, HDR blurays), PlayStation 4 Pro (4k HDR), PC (4k), and a Roku (4k HDR).

The only issues are with the Roku. They have a lot of handshaking problems with 4k and HDR, but that's on their end and they are releasing updates to try to improve that stuff.

I would buy from Amazon. Never a hassle from them on anything and if the item shows up damaged etc. the return process is easy and painless.

I would buy from Amazon. Would be nice if it came directly from them, but should be about the same. Hope the new receiver lasts a long while for you.
