Personally I think the timing is terrible but ASUS wants gamers to mine cryptocurrency when their PC is idle. The crypto market has fallen about 80% since its peak in 2017, and this November has been an special tough month for crypto investors with Bitcoin going under $4,000 for a few days. They have partnered with blockchain technology provider Quantumcloud and they will encourage users to use their idle GPUs to mine cryptocurrencies. Yeah, that's right. There are no details on what crypto currencies will be mined with Quantumcloud's software, but at least ASUS is letting potential users know that they "won't get rich quick, but you can earn some easy money with your idle GPUs".

Ya gotta ask yourself why when the object of it is to sell more ASUS hardware and ASUS gets whatever cut of the money Quantumcloud makes. This is serving ASUS, not the customer. Here's a thought ASUS, make features that customers want, not self-serving nonsense like this.

"won't get rich quick, but you can earn some easy money with your idle GPUs"

    lol

More like lose more money to the electric bill.  Your idling GPU loses some money to the electric bill, but when mining, it will lose much more.  The cryptocurrency value is so low that you won't get hardly anything.

It never was a free lunch, unless someone gave you the hardware and they setup your mining software and monitored the system and if any issue came up they would fix it and your electricity is free.

Your post is like saying the cost of folding is free, which you know for sure, it's far from a free lunch.

Asus's premise is that casual mining cryptocurrency can be profitable .. and a good use for gamers idle hardware

I'm saying "Do Your Homework", because its a can of worm at best & a paperwork headache at a minimum

The only Tax advice I'm qualified to give is you should get professional help or get comfortable reading all the IRS publications

Some of the basic issues casual miners are probably not thinking about ........

    1) If you earn any $ from Mining its taxable

    2) Quarterly estimated taxes need to be filed or interest with penalties for those whom overlook their obligations

    3) Most people casually mining have No Idea about the IRS requirements for a business ....

    4) If the IRS determines your casual Mining is a "Hobby" & not a business - Then - All income is Taxable & None of the expenses are deductible

    5) Good luck proving your electric consumption in your residence is a business expense for you Mining activity ....

Short version ....  its Not Found / Free Money to be had ..... No free lunch ....

No one makes $$$ from mining. Even the IRS knows this. You might as well grab a pick axe and hammer away in some old mine in Cali looking for real Au.

As others have pointed out, your electricity bill will eat you alive for the few pennies of income you’d get.

Although... I did read an interesting article about shale frackers having so much natgas in the permian and no pipes to move it - they’re simply flaring it off... perhaps move to midland texas with a gas generator? lol

I used to mine. Now I compute.

It's cryptomining science at the expense to your power bill. The intent is different but what the hardware is doing and your power bills is about the same.

Brad is right on this one. However, like MasterMiner said, nobody is making $$$ mining, but he should have added nobody is making $$$ mining with a GPU, unless they get free electricity.

The difference between mining and folding/crunching is intent, not technical.  Miners mine hoping to make money.  What I do is a charitable contribution to advancing medicine.  I'm reimbursed some of my expense through EVGA bucks, but it's mostly intentional charity to advance science with no expectation of profit.

I would be surprised if it's really that much. Bitcoin is down about 50% in the last two weeks. So if it was $40 today it could be down to price of electricity or less in a month. Back when Bitcoin at a high miners probably didn't even make enough to cover the cost of equipment before it crashed.

That mean she need to work at least month to profit 20$. One card.
That's higher than you pay more for electric bill than profit.

Depends on what your electric cost is, but true for MOST of the US.
A few of us (and most serious miners in the US) live in areas where electric is mostly hydropower and VERY cheap for the time being.

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

I doubt electricity is much cheaper than in my country.
Usually is around 20 euro monthly when computer work normally.
Difference is visible even if you turn off PC over night for 3-4 euro.
I would pay at least 35-40 if computer work 24h full load.

To be honest and fair with so much profit to pay only electric bill I would rather mine to help research for cancer and etc.
I hope they not cheat thousands of people who give their hardware power to help in finding different cures and not use their power for something else.

I doubt electricity is much cheaper than in my country.
Usually is around 20 euro monthly when computer work normally.

A meaningless figure for comparison - how much do you pay per KiloWatt Hour?
As soon as you mention Euro, I become 99.99% certain MY rate is lower, and your rate is a LOT higher than in 2 counties next door to me (but their rents are higher than where I am at, so it balances out).

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

    It's 7 euro cent per KW/h.

Which is pretty close to 8 cents US per dollar - or almost DOUBLE the 4.7 cents US per KWH (ALL extras like taxes included) I pay where I'm at (residential OR small business rate) or the 3 cents (again, ALL included) in the 2 counties next to me with the cheapest power in the US.

7 cents EU is good to excellent for a EU rate though from everything I've read - but I moved OUT of Iowa to Central Washington because the ballpark 7.5 cent US per KWH where I was at in Iowa (9 months of the year, 3 months was "summer rate" close to 14 cents US per KWH) was too high for a serious mining effort, despite being somewhat lower than the US 12 cent average.

Actually is 6.5 but I say 7. In Europe go up to 20 and 23 I think.
You could save if you do some things over night, after 12h is half price.
But my monthly bill for electricity, water, cable TV, cell phone, ADSL, and other taxes is around 100 euro monthly.
20-30 euro is electric bill depend how much I spent that moment, never over and never below.
In that 100 euro is included and heating during winter and heating so strong that you need to keep slightly open window constantly or you walk around in T-Shirts and underwear. But that depend of territory and buildings, part of town and only in bigger cities and not all buildings.
Other people who need to use electricity to heat self spend even double electric bill or 2.5 times higher than during summer.
