ASUS is making M.2 easier with their Z590 M.2 Q-Latch | OC3D News (overclock3d.net)

Over on the CableModders closed Facebook Group, ASUS' Technical Marketing Manager for the US, Juan Jose Guerrero III, revealed how the company would be making M.2 SSDs easier to install on their upcoming Z590 motherboard lineup.

If you have ever installed an M.2 SSD, you will know that the screws used to mount those drives are fiddly and easy to lose. That's where ASUS' M.2 Q-Latch comes in, making M.2 device installation a tool-free process. No more screws to drop or get lost and no need to find your smallest Philips head screwdriver.

Below you can see ASUS' Q-Latch system on the company's Prime Z590-A. Currently, ASUS has not confirmed which motherboards will utilise their new M.2 Latch system, though this system may only be available on premium motherboard designs. We expect to see these M.2 Q-Latch mounts on all premium Z590 products and future Prime-A and ROG series motherboards, though ASUS has not confirmed this.

ASUS' M.2 Q-Latch design is a small change that greatly impacts the PC building process. Too often have we dropped M.2 screws and too often have we heard of PC builders losing their M.2 screws. ASUS' M.2 Q-Latch system is an elegant fix for this issue, so much so that we are surprised that we haven't seen anyone else do this yet.

This is a very good idea in my opinion that I'd like all motherboard manufacturers to adopt.

Hard to believe no one has come up with a better way until now.
I actually had the screw mount hole in a motherboard pop right out before !.
I had to move the M.2 to the other spot on the board.... luckily the board had another one.

Brilliant. I lost the M2 screw on my last board. The connector should just be spring loaded and fold down, like some laptop memory DIMMS.

And how is the Q-latch for a short M.2 card not going to get in the way of a longer M.2 card? If you have to remove the short one to make room for a long one, that totally defeats the purpose of this design supposedly preventing the loss of hardware or having to fiddle with installing and removing hardware.

That makes it completely pointless.  It's a good start, but it needs to be improved.  A completely different design is needed.  Just use a non-metallic clasp which hooks over the end.  It can lay down flat out of the way when needed, or fold up and clasp the end when needed.

    For example:

I don't think that the laptop memory method would work well.  The boards are too long, and being unsupported that far would cause problems; especially when shook.  Additionally, with people being in love with M.2 heatsinks, having an unsupported end would make heatsink contact very bad.

I wonder if you can still use it traditionally or if you need to use the swivel. It may matter for a head sink like the sabrent rocket, etc. Either Way that is definitely a good upgrade for most users.

I don't get it. I mean Lenovo computers with m.2 for factor drives have had a simple plastic plunger for years now. No need to get overly complicated.
