AMD's Elusive FidelityFX Super Resolution Coming This June? | TechPowerUp

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), the company's elusive rival to the NVIDIA DLSS technology, could be arriving next month (June 2021), according to a Coreteks report. The report claims that the technology is already at an advanced stage of development, in the hands of game developers, and offers certain advantages over DLSS. For starters, it doesn't require training from a generative adversarial network (GAN), and doesn't rely on ground truth data. It is a low-overhead algorithmic upscaler (not unlike the various MadVR upscalers you're used to). It is implemented early in the pipeline. Here's the real kicker—the technology is compatible with NVIDIA GPUs, so studios developing with FSR would be serving both AMD Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce gamers.

This is excellent news. Compatibility with NVIDIA GPUs is also a surprise to me.

No rush , since no one can get a video card for the past year anyways....

Best I found was at a mom and pop place at 2.5x MSRP.  As much as I wanted to get a card, I just couldn't.  Some other guy was standing outside holding 3 6900XTs, each was selling for $2500.  I couldn't believe it.

AMD always tries to be compatible with Nvidia. It encourages adoption by game devs if they can code for both cards at once.

Sounds like things are going to get interesting.

It was supposed to get interesting with BIG NAVI, but most people kept with RTX (well those who can get them anyway).  I like to see competition, hopefully this brings some.

I don't care as long as I can turn off either AI upscaling tech.

It's going to be interesting to see if it's actually going to be as good as DLSS.
From what I gathered, DLSS requires tensor cores to do the work while the AMD solution is going to be more software-based (or at least won't require dedicated machine learning hardware).

Therefore I'm skeptic it's going to be close to DLSS in terms of quality but we'll see. (but hey, I still haven't had a chance to try DLSS yet)

Same idea here. AMD is maybe a little bit faster in rasterization performance but NVidia makes that up with their cores for Raytracing and DLSS. So I can never imagine that they are closing that gap with only software optimization

If my card is fast enough I will also turn it of but in 3 years when I don't quit hit 60fps, then it would prolonge the life of my GPU so it's certainly a nice to have.
Or to compensate the frame drop when using raytracing

Yeah, it's the main reason I'm trying to get NVIDIA and not AMD.. but at this point I'd be happy with anything really lol

    Yeah same for me.
Tomorrow I will get my 6700xt delivered but I would really like an 3070 (TI) or 3060 TI.

Let's hope that will be possible in the near future at back to normal pricing

Amd is really closing the gaps with this, they still need to work on ray tracing though with their current gpus, they might do it with their new gpus coming though

That would Be awesome for competition and hopefully will lower prices. And Intel is rumuroured to have a High end proposition as well

It will be quite interesting to see the performance comparisons between DLSS and FSR. DLSS takes up a non-trivial amount of silicon. As a primarily software based solution (which is my understanding) FSR is certainly not computationally free.  There has to be some cost or limiting factor and it will be interesting to see how that cost is distributed in HW side effects (either in processing, memory, or storage).
While FSR has the advantage of universal application, if the side effects of a SW based solution may still be system dependent.  And if the limitation to performance boost is high enough, DLSS will remain as a preferred means of resolution upscaling.

Yeah depending on how well this software-based approach turns out, it may have an affect on future architectures for AMD GPUs.
