https://www.techpowerup.com/252475/amd-to-unlock-professional-features-for-radeon-vii-to-blunt-rtx-2080s-ray-tracing-edge

To add value and give it a feature-set edge over the GeForce RTX 2080, AMD is reportedly preparing to unlock several professional graphics features for the Radeon VII that are otherwise exclusive to Radeon Pro series graphics cards. These features will be released by simply adding Radeon VII support to the upcoming Radeon Pro 19.Q1 software suite. You uninstall your Radeon Adrenalin 2019 Edition drivers and replace them with the Radeon Pro 19.Q1 drivers to access pro features.

These include access to ProRender, certifications for various 3D, CAD, and CGI suites, SecureMI security, enterprise virtualization, and more. Over 320 professional applications are certified for the Radeon Pro 19.Q1 drivers, all of which will seamlessly run on the Radeon VII. AMD will also introduce a feature that lets you switch between the Radeon Pro and Radeon Adrenalin drivers on-the-fly (without needing reboots), so you don't lose your ability to play the latest games with day-one optimizations from AMD. These drivers will make the Radeon VII an incredible value in the enterprise space, as the GPU offers performance rivaling professional graphics cards priced well north of $3,000. It also blunts the feature-set edge the RTX 2080 holds over the Radeon VII.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

I guess it's good but it's not like these features are really that important to gamers who are the target market.

Looks like they are aiming at new target. Gammers are not the only people who buy GPUs
I think this card has potential for BOINC and Folding.

AMD is now saying this is a bad card for gaming, so maybe people will try to stop pushing this hot mess of a card as a gaming card. $700 for the Radeon VII for gaming is a joke, maybe they can get some compute people to buy up the cards AMD has made and get out of it as fast as possible.

Now AMD needs to figure out how to fix Navi 7nm process so it doesn't end up being a terrible gaming card like the Radeon VII.

Take it easy and stop being such a negative nancy. lol  I don't think the Radeon is a terrible GPU.  Where are you getting all this negative media from?  It's still in its infancy.  Let the drivers mature on both sides and see what the verdict is in 6 months or so.

Maybe it is my eyes, but I have always though AMD GPUs the display is more vivid, like the color pops.
I think that is the best way for me to put it. Maybe it is just the way my eyes sees things, I'm not sure.
I've always likes the way AMD cards display looked. I do have a mix of cards from HD7990, R9-280x to 1080 and 1080Ti
Each card has its pluses and minuses.

From the people that have had this steaming pile of crude in their own hands. Drivers are not going to fix a silicon issue. Best AMD can do is try to get features that were turned off to push this card on gamers and get compute user to buy them.

No AMD hasnt said its bad for gaming, nor is this a admission of defeat.
Plus you talk about how dare AMD charge $700 for a GPU when Nvidia gets away for selling a GPU that costs $2000.
The only reason why the Radeon VII costs so much is because of HBM and its not like they had the resources to devote to make it cheaper by going GDDR6.
Plus its got to mature a bit, hey not everyone was happy with nvidia when the RTX series first launched.
Hell they are still not happy.

That bold statement is what everyone, RTX owners alike, reviewers, etc. keep talking about, yet Kram still on denial about that.
It is so very obvious now...people selling their RTX cards due to not being happy.

It's called reading between the lines of the of AMD's position. They know it's a bad gaming card, it's gaming issues can't be fixed with a driver. Turn on features not needed for gaming and get rid of the junk they tried to pawn off on gamers for $700 to people that might want it for compute. AMD may be able to get rid of the 5,000 cards they supposedly produced doing this as gamers are not going to be buying this card. A company doesn't take a $700 card and turn on features that makes it work like their $3,000 because of no reason.

AMD is unlocking professional features on the Radeon VII to make it more appealing. Seems smart.

Didn’t Nvidia “unlock” the Titan X(P) and Titan Xp to perform better after the Radeon Vega Frontier/Vega 64/52 released.. I mean, Nvidia did “unlock professional” features, and they “allowed” the cards perform much better where they had legitimately been holding their product back on purpose through drivers.

*Adding this before posting... I was remembering right and didn’t want to say the wrong thing... Nvidia did unlock “some professional features”. www.techpowerup.com/235701/nvidia-unlocks-certain-professional-features-for-titan-xp-through-driver-update%3Famp

So, AMD is going to quickly make this card a little more appealing, unlike Nvidia, who can’t even get their own promised features out in mass 6 months after release. Bravo AMD, that is a smart move.

Weird how some people are trying to act as if AMD is doing something that Nvidia wouldn’t do to gain marketability for their product.

    Agreed.

And it's not just AMD and NVIDIA. This is extremely common practice all over the hardware industry. Multimeters, Oscilliscopes, even the humble Raspberry Pi; they all provide examples of advanced features locked behind a paywall accessible by a software unlock key or paid firmware update.

And for Kram, the thing about the Radeon VII being horribly broken and unfixable via drivers .... What?! Unfounded, baseless gibberish. Give it time. Anyone has the tiny chance of saying crazy things and ending up being completely right by pure dumb luck, but come on man, you have to realize that everyone perceives you as just plain crazy, right? It's completely baseless and you have zero evidence, but you just keep repeating it over and over again. But NVIDIA's 2xxx series cards? No, those aren't and never were "a complete mess". lol

I am going to say that NVIDIA's headquarters is going to burn down in 6 days. To me, all signs point to that being true. But, come on man, you have to know that is crazy talk. If it ends up happening in 6 days, it's not because I had any idea of what I was talking about.

You can think I'm crazy all you want, but AMD did not unlock these features of their $700 Radeon VII with performance rivaling professional graphics cards priced well north of $3,000 because they see a bright gaming future for the Radeon VII. One would expect AMD to offer up drivers that fix the issues before they let a $700 invade it's $3,000 card territory.

You make a good point here.

Why would they shoot self in the foot by eating up their own enterprise line?  I think that's a fair question but than again, are they trying to give you the "Titan" experience at a much cheaper price?

Thing is they are talking about a fall release of Navi. So wait 6 months for it to mature would put it close enough I personally think people would be better off waiting for the fall when Navi might be released.

I really wanted AMD to do good and bring a fight to NVIDA but really they are offering the same price as what you could get a 1080ti for two years ago. The 2080 offers features that most would see worth the extra to have and games don’t crash like they do with the AMD drivers. Sure it might be able to be patched but why wait when NVIDIA has pretty stable drivers today?

As for developers adopting the card that would be good but really doesn’t cause the war with NVIDIA that pushes development to go into overdrive and prices to drop. This really doesn’t gain any brand loyalty to anyone but NVIDA for gamers.

Why did NVIDIA unlock the Titan Xp's professional features? Was it because those video cards were a "complete mess" of "broken silicon" which "couldn't be fixed by drivers"? No. So, there are other possible reasons. Let's not jump to wild conclusions.

I think that AMD is simply desperate to bring a fight to NVIDIA. I think that is the simple answer. Just like that is the same answer for why NVIDIA did the same thing for the Titan Xp.

The Radeon VII still lacks features, performance, and precision of AMD's true professional cards and therefore won't gut their professional card's marketability to those who need/want them.

And, now, the most obvious counterpoint. If the Radeon VII are indeed secretly a "broken mess of bad silicon which can't be fixed by drivers" and "AMD knows it", AMD would NOT be unlocking professional features on the cards. Unlocking features doesn't fix bad silicon. Defects and returns cost money and cost reputation. If the unfounded bad silicon claim were true, the last thing AMD would be doing is trying to make the cards more marketable at launch in order to sell more and create a larger PR backlash.

Nvidia did it to get rid of the cards as the Titan V was coming in 4 months, which took everyone by surprise and they didn't want to get stuck holding a bunch of cards that are selling at $1,200.

The AMD Radeon VII card hasn't been on the market a week, unlike the Titan cards. All honest gaming reviews shows this card has some serious issues and again one would expect AMD to offer up drivers that fixes these gaming issues before they let a $700 invade it's $3,000 card territory. Quote from the techpowerup link.

These drivers will make the Radeon VII an incredible value in the enterprise space, as the GPU offers performance rivaling professional graphics cards priced well north of $3,000.

So your argument that this card won't cut into their higher priced professional card's is invalid.

What world are you in that you think team green unlocked features to move cards?
It’s widely accepted and known that it was done to counter the Vega Frontier and Vega56/64...
