https://www.techradar.com/news/amd-ryzen-cpus-predicted-to-own-intel-even-harder-this-year

Investor confidence in AMD is high at the moment, and its share price is heading steadily upwards, with one analyst predicting that the company could be in for a big – or even bigger, rather – sales spike with its Ryzen processors this year. As reported by The Street, research analyst Mitch Steves of RBC Capital Markets believes that AMD’s “share gains in PCs will continue to move into the mid-20% market share range” as we go forward, and that he has “higher conviction in server units in both 2020 and 2021” for AMD to boot.

Recent figures on desktop CPU unit sales from another analyst firm, Mercury Research, pegged Ryzen chips with an 18.3% market share in the final quarter of 2019. That was up from 15.9% at the end of 2018, to give you some perspective on the expected acceleration of sales AMD could achieve according to Steves.

Obviously any analyst forecasting should be taken with a suitable amount of caution, though. In those recent figures from Mercury Research, AMD made even stronger upward progress in laptop processors, with a 4% year-on-year increase to reach a 16.2% market share – and that will likely worry Intel even more (because mobile chips are where the majority of sales are at).
All of this isn’t too surprising given the current picture of Intel’s CPU stock shortages, rumored delays to next-gen Comet Lake desktop processors (potentially down to power consumption issues), and AMD’s already strongly surging Ryzen sales – plus its incoming Ryzen 4000 products which are expected to provide a major performance boost (potentially up to 20% compared to 3rd-gen Ryzen CPUs).

Intel needs to respond to these threats, that much is clear, and another whisper we’ve heard on the grapevine is that the chip giant will bring its financial might to bear on the CPU market at large, throwing billions of dollars at pushing Core (mainstream) and Xeon (server) processors. This could mean some serious (further) price cuts across the board for Intel, but all this is shaky speculation as it stands.

I agree with the article. Intel's inability to provide large amount of processors for its OEMs is causing several of those OEMs to buy more AMD CPUs. Intel still has issues with 14nm and 10nm no where in sight yet.

With Intel still stuck at 14nm AMD has a good chance to catchup even further.

Yeah the new threadrippers are kickin tail in the time spy extreme cpu scores right now, the Threadripper 3990X just smoked the intel W-3175X by almost 4000 points. But the 3970X's are really strong in that category as well.

Its not even the end of the first quarter for 2020 and look the results. 😸
    Yay😼

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

    TechRadar....sigh.

So AMD will make the leap from 15% of the x86 market to 17%?  Good for them.

I'm sure come 5nm, AMD will raise it again to $999, I'm thinking they will make 16-core chiplets (mathematically, they should cover the same area as 7nm 8-core dies) and thus a 32-core AM5 flagship is possible, but they may debut with 24-core until Intel gives them reason.

    Mainstream 5nm 24-core at $1000, I see it happening.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

I really want AMD to push the envelope but I don't want them to ever become the #1 company since I am sure if they beat Intel that badly we would quickly realize it's not a utopia of cheap and powerful CPU's as they would raise prices and slow speed increases like Intel did.

We're comparing a 7nm 64-Core monster to a 14nm 28-Core CPU and all it did was beat it by 4,000 points?  Am I wrong here?

Exactly. It SHOULD crush that chip. What's the real concern is that Intel doesn't seem to have a response to "retake the crown" so to speak.

🤔 yes....it still beat Intel by one point though😼😹😹

not sure about the strange title ... "Ryzen CPUs predicted to own Intel even harder" ... but whatever, someone's idea of being "edgy"

AMD ‘financial analyst day’, which takes place on March 5 ---> we will see how good things are @ Red soon enough

Intel will of course not rollover & play dead - so maybe more price cuts ?

The higher prices are due to the high tapeout cost at TSMC.
