MD today announced four new desktop processors across three very diverse markets. To begin with, the company crowned its socket AM4 mainstream desktop platform with the mighty new Ryzen 9 3950X processor. Next up, it released its new baseline entry-level APU, the Athlon 3000G. Lastly, it detailed the 3rd generation Ryzen Threadripper HEDT processor family with two initial models, the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and the flagship Ryzen Threadripper 3970X. The company also formally released its AGESA Combo PI 1.0.0.4B microcode, and with it, introduced a killer new feature for all "Zen 2" based Ryzen processors, called ECO Mode.

The Ryzen 9 3950X is a 16-core/32-thread processor in the AM4 package, compatible with all socket AM4 motherboards, provided they have the latest BIOS update with AGESA Combo PI 1.0.0.4B microcode. The processor comes with clock-speeds of 3.50 GHz base, with 4.70 GHz maximum boost frequency, and the same 105 W TDP as the 12-core Ryzen 9 3900X. With 512 KB of dedicated L2 cache per core, and 64 MB of shared L3 cache, the chip has a mammoth 72 MB of "total cache."

Yes the new Threadrippers will be expensive but the additional performance along with PCI-E 4.0 on the new motherboards should make this CPU shine.

Oh wow.  Didn't think they would get this pricey but did predict they'd possibly head the old intel pricing scheme.

The 10980X is looking better price wise, that's IF another price cut is implemented but that's not looking possible with TR3 atm but maybe against the Ryzen 9.

I've been contemplating a new build for gaming mainly but productivity too. My heart says to go for the 3950X but my mind says I don't need it. I was hoping for a better price point. One thing for sure, I'm tired of turning down the eye candy to maintain 144 FPS on BFV with my 2080Ti/7700k combo the proc has got to go for gaming. Maybe as @RainStryke says 3900x is looking better and better.

I am in your boat as well, even at 4.9 my 7700 seems to be struggling.

Yep I'm at 5.0 and it just doesn't cut it with modern games. In-game my proc is 100% all threads and 2080Ti max hits 60-70% usage classic sign of bottleneck but I didn't see anyone say the 3950X would be overkill.  I keep hearing the 3700X is the sweet spot for gaming.
