AMD is giving final touches to an AGESA microcode update that fixes the issue of underwhelming Precision Boost behavior on its 3rd generation Ryzen processors. Version ComboAM4 1.0.0.3ABBA is being pushed to motherboard manufacturers to integrate with their UEFI firmware, and one such dispatch to MSI got leaked to the web on ChipHell. Tom's Hardware grabbed the BIOS as it was compatible with the MEG X570 Creator motherboard they have, and tested the Ryzen 9 3900X and Ryzen 7 3700X with it.

In its testing, posted in a mini-review article, Tom's Hardware observed that with AGESA 1.0.0.3ABBA, their 3700X sample was correctly hitting 4.40 GHz across the board at stock settings. With the older 1.0.0.3AB, it would touch 4.375 GHz. The Ryzen 9 3900X behaves slightly differently with this microcode. Tom's Hardware was able to raise its peak boost frequency from 4.575 GHz to 4.625 GHz (above the 4.60 GHz specification), but in certain tests such as POV-Ray and CineBench, its boost frequency decays down to 4.250 GHz. Overall, the reviewer tabulated improved performance on the chips with the new microcode. The new microcode also apparently changes the processor's thermal thresholds.

The only thing from the article I could not figure out is if this update has every single tweak done to it

I say at least at this point that these early test results will not effect much until things are finalized.
In either case its possible this will solve some of the complaints against AMD and hopefully will pop AMD back into some peoples good graces.
Again new tech, new issues so personally I am not bothered by any of this.
I am very happy with my AMD setup and I dont need it to overclock to its max frequency.
Hey a 1TB hard drive isnt really 1TB and 8 gigs of ram really isnt 8 gigs of ram.
Having round numbers does sound better on the box so I am not as fussed about this. its not false advertising or misleading when you actually know that there is a cap.
Though maybe AMD should lower the clocks on the side of the box just in case

From 4.375 GHz to 4.4 GHz? Well, I am glad that they are fixing it, but I wonder if the difference is really measurable in day-to-day use.

Yeah i agree, thus is another reason why this doesnt fuss me too much.
I mean for the money right now the zen2 platform still runs great even on stock and while yeah overclockers are being let down for me who rather overclock the GPU then CPU this has been like a dream as even at stock my 3600 runs buttery smooth

So, I wonder why the 95% affected were making such a big deal about it.

The differences will probably vary according to motherboard and CPU cooling.

Well thats a fairly normal thing, i mean you get a good mobo and cooler of course its going to do better.
But i do wonder how many people have gone to x570 much less the higher tier $350+ motherboards.
I mean for all we know most of the people complaining might be pairing a 3700X or a 3900X with a bloody MSI b450 Tomahawk.
I am unaware of how well x570 is doing as a platform because if you have a existing ryzen system you can up the BIOS to support zen2 so yeah these claims still dont hold a lot of water if you dont have a large pool of data with people with higher end parts.

Why is everyone freaking out?  We don't patch our games and or windows?  This is how the future will be like.  Military hardware will get updates too.

When did I ever say that?  You're adding words just to up your fanboyism and I don't care to be honest.  When did I ever say that I agree with updates that degrade your spec'd performance you were promised for?  I'm all for updates but not for skewing with the performance you paid for and were promised, that includes intel.

You are so right. AMD is adapting Nvidia' s shady practice. If Nvidia is allowed to do these practices, what makes you think others won't follow.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Yeah butagain it would not be the first time the box wasnt accurate concerning a product when when it comes this close is it really an issue?
Again i feel i must use the hard drive analogy, I bought a 3TB hard drive and yet when i bring up the information about it its 2.72 TB.
I guess now I want to sue seagate because they decided to round up?
Should I ignore the reality of how hard drives work and demand seagate give me money for this so called issue?
Should I go buy a WD drive instead fully knowing that they too have the same issue?
I mean granted seagate hard drives are not so great anyhow but if this was a WD drive the same rules should apply.
Though maybe i would be a little more mad as WD drives are pricey (mainly due to the failings of seagate)
