https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-ryzen-4000-desktop-cpus-release-date AMD's 4th generation Ryzen desktop processors are expected to launch around September 2020. These processors will be socket AM4 multi-chip modules of up to two CPU complex dies based on the "Zen 3" microarchitecture, combined with an I/O controller die. The "Zen 3" chiplets are expected to be fabricated on a newer 7 nm-class process by TSMC, either N7P or N7+. The biggest design change with "Zen 3" is the doing away of CCX arrangement of CPU cores, with each chiplet holding a common block of cores sharing a last-level cache. This, along with clock speed headroom gains from the new node are expected to yield generational price-performance increases. The "Zen 2" based 8-core "Renoir" die is also expected to make its socket AM4 debut within 2020, succeeding the "Picasso" based quad-core Ryzen 3000-series APUs. This is a particularly important product for AMD, as it is expected to compete with Intel's 10th generation Core i5 6-core/12-thread processors in terms of pricing, while offering more cores (8-core/16-thread) and a faster iGPU. The 4th gen Ryzen socket AM4 processor lineup will launch alongside AMD's 600-series motherboard chipset, with forwards- and backwards-compatibility (i.e., "Vermeer" and "Renoir" working with older chipsets, and older AM4 processors working on 600-series chipset motherboards). AMD was originally expected to unveil these processors at the 2020 Computex trade-show in June, but Computex itself is rescheduled to late-September. Personally I feel AMD should release sooner but the Corona virus has caused many delays in the tech industry.

What NM will the CPU I/O die be? IIRC the 3k series still used 14nm for their I/O. If I'm wrong please correct me. Based on that assumption I'm guessing the I/O die will be 7nm. If so I bet the X670 boards will use 7nm for their "northbridge" as X570 used the same 14nm I/O die on the motherboard as the I/O on the 3k series chip.

Nice. Staying with AM4 socket as rumored. Hopefully I get to play with CPU OC as this last round has been boring. Then again, memory overclocking has kept me having fun and busy.

It was a pretty safe bet, all things considered. DDR5 will require a new socket for Zen 4 Q4 of next year, so changing sockets back-to-back is expensive and a bit silly.

I dunno about that, AMD still may use a similar socket to AM4 and offer limited DDR5 compatibility for current chips like the 3000 series or 4000, could do that with the chipset in theory. I mean there have been times both intel and AMD was able to make some processors supported with newer ram, the intel core duo comes to mind as some of those used the same socket as first gen i7's. AMD also did some tricks too with the Athelon II

Nay, I had a E6300 Core 2 Duo, and a first-gen i7 920. C2D used the old LGA775 socket. The socket changed to LGA1366 because the i7 900 chips were the first to integrate the memory controllers. Even on the same generation of memory, when AMD changed from single-channel to dual-channel IMCs they had to change from socket 754 to 939 to add enough pins to make it possible. Every change in memory generation necessitates a new socket, and DDR5 changes a lot of the underlying technology compared to DDR4. Far more than the change from DDR3 to DDR4... really excited for those Zen 4 benchmarks.

Even so some core 2 duos were able to work on both DDR2 and 3 so it may not need a socket change, one can still affix some of the responsibility to the chipset to offer limited backwards compatibility. Never say never after all. I mean it doesnt matter anyhow as thanks to covid and economics the popularity of DDR4 will stay most likely for a bit longer and the industry may have to sit on DDR5 for a bit as it will be too expensive most likely

T hose who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way. Affiliate Code: 3T15O1S07G

Shouldn't the Zen 2-based APUs for AM4 comes first, and filed under the same Ryzen 4000 series, like the laptop SKUs? We can't just assume Zen 3 is coming first just because they will be called Ryzen 4000 as well.

Difficult to say what AMD will do with the Corona virus causing delays of tech everywhere.
