Just received one of the new 970 SSC cards which I ordered directly from EVGA's European HQ. It's really nice! After installing the card and testing a few different games, I noticed that when the card is idling and the '0db' mode is active the fans are not actually completely still. They keep wiggling back and forth a few mm every 10-15 seconds. At first I was a bit worried they might be attempting to start and failing - i.e. I thought I had a pair of faulty fans on my hands. But when they reach 60-65 degrees they always start up no problem, as advertised. I've also tried using Precision to control the fan speed manually, and both fans are able to spin at the full range of speeds. So there's no physical problem with the fans as far as I can tell. Anyway I decided to try removing all the nvidia drivers. This solved the problem. Fans are perfectly still below 60 degrees. There's no twitching, wiggling etc. This is also the case when I boot into Safe Mode. Could there be something in the nvidia drivers that's conflicting with the card's BIOS-based fan control? On the face of it this looks like an incredibly minor problem, but it's bothersome for two reasons: firstly, the behaviour of the fans closely resembles faulty PWM fans that I've seen in the past (e.g. a duff stock Intel cooler in a system I built for a friend ages ago); secondly, with the side removed from the PC it sounds like the fans don't appreciate being turned on and off again at regular intervals - whenever they start moving and immediately stop there's a quiet whistle from the fans' power delivery system (the capacitors charging/discharging?) I've seen similar reports about the MSI Gaming edition. Using earlier revisions of the nvidia driver the Twin Frozr fans would spin up every thirty seconds then stop. In-game temperatures on my EVGA card never exceed 73 degrees. My PSU is a gold-rated 650 watt Seasonic. In the meantime I think I'm just going set a custom fan curve in Precision and hope that a future driver update fixes the problem. Has anyone else with a new SSC noticed the same behaviour?

My FTW does the same but I never heard a noise when they wiggled so it doesn't bother me at all.

I had no idea the fans wiggled on my new SSC until you posted lol. I set a custom fan curve to turn off at below 40C, and after watching for about 30 sec. the fans wiggle every 5-6 sec. but I can hear no noise once they stop right after load (even with my ear right up against it). I'm on driver 347.09.

I've got 2 x 980 SC ACX 2.0's and they do the same thing. I just figured it was normal and I ignore the issue. Ignorance is bliss!! They have a 3 year warranty so if the fans go belly up, I'll rma. Edit: I don't hear any noise from them.

Do you know if EVGA will just replace the cooler or do you have to send in the entire card though? Having to get back a refurb. card just because of bad fans is not good.

Well I think I'll hold off on a fresh Windows install in that case. Phew. I've just had another look and I think I may have been imagining the noise tbh. Can't hear anything now when they move. It's mainly the little wiggle I was concerned about. There's definitely something amiss because they don't do it at all until you install the nvidia drivers. I've tried 347.09 and 344.something. The driver wants the fans to spin, the fans refuse, over and over again... zildjian75, don't you have a 5 year warranty? I thought everyone who bought a 970/980 (until March at least) gets a free bump up to 5 years...?

I would assume you would have to send back the entire card and they would either send you a refurb, or fix the fans on the card, and send them back. Hopefully, it won't come to that.

Obviously I have no idea if this behaviour is doing any harm to the fans, it just doesn't seem good practice to keep repeatedly supplying a little bit of power to the motor and then turning it off again. Am I right in thinking all ACX 2 coolers do this?

5 year warranty!?!?!? That's great!! I was not aware of that. The 3 year mark is usually when I upgrade, but I guess you never know. If the warranty is 5 years, I'll take it... If it's 3 years, that's fine too.

I don't know if all the ACX 2.0 Fans are doing this, but you have a 970 SSC and I have 2 x 980 SC's so It's looking like it may be. I don't know if it's detrimental to the fans, but it can't be good.

How could a tiny bit of wiggling in the fans possibly be more detrimental than the fans actually running all the time?

I'd just rather they were turned off completely. At the moment it looks like they're being turned on and off every few seconds. That's not what they're supposed to do - they don't do it when I'm in the motherboard's BIOS and they don't do it in safe mode. The problem isn't that the fans themselves are wiggling, it's that some part of the card is being turned on and turned off at regular intervals. It's probably not very harmful at all, you're right.

Completely normal. Stop worrying about it and enjoy your new card!
