I was sitting on the computer, watching YouTube. Suddenly my screens went black and I could smell something Burning. I looked into the computer and felt the heat from the gfx card. Removed it, and a small black piece fell out of it. It was black with some metalpins, and it seemed to have soth on it.

I,ve had this card for two years, and I,ve never had trouble with it earlier, I,m just glad I was next to the computer when it happened. But im unsure what to so from herre, and what caused it.

thats not good, sounds like a smd over heated and melted the solder, only thing you can do is RMA it if still under warranty, if it's not then afraid you will be buying a new card.

While I was back at one of the Miller Electric factories in Appleton, I watched one of the machines making PC boards for their electric welders. SMD components are feed on long rolls of tape with as many as 20 different lines for the robot to pick up from using a suction cup robotic arm. It drops it on the board at very high rate of speed. Once they are all in place it moves on to an easy bake oven and melts the solder all at once. That part of your board just got too hot.

That is me in the picture, anyone else ever pet a live Lion?

Aw man that sucks. Powerful card but the heat is sometimes too much. I think it is more of a card by card issue however, my evga sc has been very cool, but I understand other models are eh.

    Hello,

I had a similar problem just now... I game minimum 6-8 hours per day and sometimes even more.. I was playing a lot GTA V lately .. which bring the cards to knees in terms of heat... It was just fine yesterday , today I turned on the PC , gamed for a couple of minutes and PC suddenly shut down. Thought it was power , but after checking power and making sure it's fine , I removed both cards and the PC turned on, plugged in the second card into the first slot and bam turned on , I grabbed the other one and sniffed my way around it, and it does have a burning smell...

Tried to clean it and plug it back in, thinking maybe it's a dust thing , it powered on for a couple of minutes and then PC shut down again .

RIP Evga GTX 980 Ti SC ... Was a good 2+ years run .. but I expected it will last a little bit longer ... The other card is working ... hope it won't get fried too .

I think I will keep it running on default settings and won't mess around with power and temp limits ... I can't live without my PC...

Time for 1080 Ti shopping ... I was seriously thinking of buying 2 but I was having faith in my 980 Tis ... I think that's enough excuse to throw 1400+ $ on them :D

Hahahaha! Make sure you check the SLI box, and Make sure you explain it is part of an SLI setup in the description. Just trust me on this part.

My 980 Ti ACX 2.0 burned too, it was very scary as I was testing the power supply (wich I thought was the culprit about the system not powering up). A lot of smoke came from the VGA O.O

I am very disappointed about the poor quality of the heatsink of these cards, they are extremely hot even on a well ventilated case, something that I hate...90º easily in summer...But this doesnt apply to EVGA only, but other brands...you pay 600 € or more for high end VGAs and get chinese heatsinks and fans in return :(

On the other side, you buy a Supernova power supply and the construction is top notch...VGAs should be the same.

The second card is running WAY lot lower in term of fan noise, The defective card, the fan noise is SO loud even with normal fan profile. The second card is WAY lot less lower fan noise, and the air blowing out of it feels alot cooler than the first.

If the hot card is the top card, you likely already know that with any SLI setup that the top card runs hotter due to hot air rising from the bottom card. Even more true for non-blower style cards such as the ACX and iCX models from EVGA, as they exhaust hot air right back into the case instead of exhausting out of the back of the case like a blower card would.

I'm not saying that your card doesn't have an issue, just that having the top card run hotter than the bottom card is 100% normal.

Good info. In addition when your system is at idle the primary card (top slot) does all of the 2D graphics while the bottom card does nothing unless you start a 3D app/game that supports SLI.

That is quite weird, Im sure EVGA will look into it and make things right with their legendary customer service.
