Looks like my two KPE's ( 75% & 75.1% ) turned out to be on the lower end for OCing, 1480MHz in SLI  I was really hoping for 1500MHz but I still have a lot more testing to do.

I still really like these card's none the less. Best looking GPU I have ever owned and very good performance in games, even at stock speeds.

Do you exceed 1500 MHz with a single card? What are your max. temperatures in SLI and single card mode?

Yes, both did around 1520MHz but I need to go back and re test both cards. I had issues with driver 353.30 and switched to 353.38, but all of my single card test where run with the first driver.

My max temperature when running a single card was 65C. SLI top card hits 78C and bottom stays at 65C.

If you're trying to add voltage try it with none. My 980 KP's will run 1506 at 1.20v with the memory at 2000 in SLI all day. At 1.212 they run 1525.

Run Vinces XOC bios ..... it'll allow about 1,000 rpm more of fan speed. Keeping these cards under 50c is big for stability.

I was able to get 1520MHz core and 2053MHz memory in SLI without any artifacts at 1.212V. When running stock voltage ( 1.187V ) it will pass all test, but the core will down clock some.

I was going to try out Vinces XOC bios this weekend, I just wanted to see how well these would OC on the factory bios.

Temps are really good on these card's. The max temp on the top GPU when benching is no more then 65C, the bottom stays under 58C. I can get the top to hit mid 70C if I run valley for 30 minutes +, which is still really good for an air cooler.

My old kpe 980's maxed out at 1530MHz in SLI, I can't remember the max memory I got. They where 77 and 69 ASIC.

Thanks for the advice ssiperko1

Vipergtspa have U put the KPEs under water or r u using the stock ACX cooler?

Koz I thought KPEs are meant for water?

Because I was going to get 2 classyz, but a user in another thread said I will get throttling issues if I OC it more without water.

Currently they are running on the stock cooler, which is doing a great job. I may put them in a water loop later down the road, if there is a water block that gets released for them. I know you can mod the 980 block to work with them if you need one now.

I was getting minor throttling with stock voltage, but when increasing the voltage to 1.212V there is none what so ever. My previous 980 kpe would throttle at temps higher then 70C, but these 980 Ti's do not. If they even get that hot.

I am loving these KPE. I would highly recommend them if you want to spend the extra money over the classy's. Perform great at stock and overclocked, stay much cooler then any other air cooled GPU I have owned, build quality is superb, and by far the nicest looking gpu out there.

Well I would grab 2x KPEs in a heart beat but its impossible for me. I live in Australia, EVGA don't ship here, and also there is always no stock and I never get e-mail notification sent to me. I maybe very far down the list.

So I would have to wait till KPEs actually are available here which I think will be a very long time.

The original 980 KPE isn't even available here in Australia yet, except from one seller at a ridiculous price. So I have no idea if I will ever be able to get a 980 Ti KPE otherwise I definatly would.

Its too bad though maxwell has done away pretty much with overvolting gpu's on water, had alot of fun overclocking/ov my 780ti kingpin. Hopefully
I will get a good card again this time around

Re: 980 Ti Kingpin 2015/08/06 20:09:18 (permalink)
Hey guys, Ive been looking at these 980 ti kingpins a bit over the last while.. they are so sweet looking... I just don't know if I should make the switch. Im worried even though these are kingpins it might end up being a downgrade. Id like to get some of your guys opinion..

Right now Im running a 4790k, 16Gb ram and 2 way SLI titanX Hybrids. They are freaking beasts and I love them. I play around with benchmarking a bit and overclocking, though it isn't by any means the main use for my cards. Im an absolute diehard gamer.. I guess as evidenced by the fact that I built this monstrosity of a pc strictly for gaming. So yeah, I regularly overclock my cards when playing the witcher or when doing benchmarking. I don't really have any need to overclock for any other games at the moment as I can do 4k/60fps on any game that's come out in the last year and of course before that. My cards regularly boost to 1510Mhz and pretty much stay there for the duration of my gaming/benching. I also usually do around a 250Mhz on the memory. Id like to try to push them a little harder but its really hard to find information on the proper way to go about voltage tweaking to get higher stable overclocks.. so usually I just set the power limit to 110% and a few times Ive added 12mv to the cards but I cant remember if it did much.

So yeah.. Id just really like to know, going by what Ive said here, if you guys think it would be smart or not so smart for someone like me, who likes overclocking but isn't exactly a pro, to switch my 2 titan X hybrids for 2 980 ti kingpins.

thanks!

So far I am stable at 1531MHz core 2078MHz memory, this is with the stock voltage and stock bios.

Pretty happy thus far, will continue to test them and see how far they will go.

Can any of you that own this card tell me if there is a fan header on it. I ordered one and ekwb cooling block and want to control my radiator fans directly from the card. (Not powered from the card )

The Waterblock covers the fan headers, so without modifying the waterblocks, you won't use the fan header.

Get a fan controller or run it off of a header from the motherboard. Since the card will likely stay under 45c during heavy benching loads anyway, it won't make a difference and controlling it from a fan header on the card will be pointless.

Are any of you guys familiar with the XOC KPE Bios?

https://xdevs.com/guide/maxwell_big_oc/

It has a newer bios version D0 vs 90 although it was compiled couple months earlier.

Safe to use on water cooled KPEs?

Thanks

Something unexplained is happening when I use Precision XOC or Classified voltage tweaker to raise the voltage of my 980 Ti KPE. I have now no problem raising the voltage via software and verifying it with a voltmeter but as soon as I run a benchmark or stress test with Furmark the voltage drops 30-40 mv if above 1212mv or if I set a constant voltage below 1212mv it goes up to 1212mv. Point is the voltage does not stay where I set especially when I want a constant 1265 mv I'll get 1230 mv. Not using bios mods anymore until I figure this out. This was on the standard OC bios for the 980 Ti KPE.

Any experienced overclockers please care to comment?

Thanks

May come off as rude, but I promise it is not intended that way. Take your questions to the “OC Lab” forum that was recently created. T|n and K|ngp|n will be helping out. Being that they are the masterminds behind this board, see if they can give you the answers :-)

I am getting ready to walk out of the door, but I can split your posts into its own thread in the OC Lab section so that you can gain traction with the experts :-). What do you think? It’s your post so I will leave it up to you.

Thanks

Disabling vdroop should fix the voltage drops. Running the xoc vbios should keep the card from raising its voltage since boost will disabled. On the standard oc bios gpu boost is still enabled which means gpu boost is still in control of the voltage.

I suspected vdroop was at play but 30 mv worth of it?? Thats a lot!

Thanks.

One thing I can't figure out. If my boost clock according to Gpu-Z is 1304 mhz why does it boost up to 1430 mhz under max load?

Also increasing the gpu frequency with Afterburner or Prec X by +25, or +75 or whatever doesnt add up in regards to the final Boost frequency...

Must be those clock states controlling the final boost frequency independant of the final gpu frequency right?

Wonder if theres any way to tell which clock state your at in Afterburner...

Thanks

GPU Boost is causing the gpu to clock up to 1430. No, there isn't a way to see that in afterburner.

So its going by the boost table in the firmware considering thermals and voltages and stuff like that?

I thought that the boost clock was set in stone in the boost frequency field of the common section under the Maxwell bios tweaker?

Thanks
