I have the exact same problem... Whenever I minimize the game the coil stops but when I maximize it starts again... It's so annoying.

Coil whine is a bad thing and makes me unhappy.
Use the EVGA Precision software to limit frame rate and coil whine will become less.

Yep looks like I am going to have to drain my loop and reinstall the factory cooler for RMA... Sigh... Going to have to bypass the GPU part of my loop and just run the next card on air to be sure this doesn't happen again.
I've been leaving the battlefield menu up when its at it worst overnight, so far no difference. Gonna leave it all day today to see if it Quiets down at all. I don't think it will but anything to help from having to redo my loop again lol.

4 out of 4 have it now... Took three back that had coil whine. I now tried an ACX, coil whine too. It has the least for sure. The ASIC quality is 64 on this one though, the last one I had was 74%.

Come on people this became much bigger problem, what happen...
I didn't notice on mine, but I didn't OC almost at all.
Is it only on GTX780Ti or different series too.
Really bad, GTX780Ti and series 7xx are really nice card.
I will upgrade on Ti too. Because if I don't upgrade now I will wait next almost 2.5 year to the end of Maxwell.
No way to buy again first NVIDIA locked half products.

Re: 780 Ti Coil Whine? 2014/01/01 19:36:41 (permalink)
I just registered here to provide some info that hopefully will help you folks troubleshoot more accurately. I don't know if there is a problem with your EVGA cards or not, but I do know concretely that the Corsair AX series power supplies (and perhaps others in their line) suffer from well documented cases of coil whine. Just go Google "AX860 coil whine" or your model # and the words "coil whine."

While some amount of coil whine cases are to be expected from any large volume PSU manufacturer, a quick comparison of similar searches on other brands will show that these cases are far fewer in quantity and that the Corsair PSU's are troublesome. This is pretty surprising since the PSU is actually a Seasonic, which usually means quality but you cannot ignore the many pages of forum complaints in regard to this issue.

As for why you are just hearing it now? Well if you're upgrading from a different generation GPU (or upgrading multiple components at a time) you are likely adding more load to your PSU. It makes perfect sense then that you might attribute this whine to the latest component you added (your new EVGA card, for example) when in actuality the fault lies with your PSU. In browsing this thread it seems like the commonality is in fact a Corsair AX PSU.

Like I said at the start, I cannot claim the EVGA card isn't at fault - I don't know that. However I can certainly steer you in the right direction if you want to troubleshoot the issue and if you have a Corsair PSU that is exactly where I would start. Somewhere else in this thread a guy suggested using a cardboard tube (like an empty paper towel roll) to help you isolate where sound is coming from. That might be an excellent way to get a better reference of where the noise is coming from.

Good luck - please let me know if this was helpful or if you were able to isolate the issue. FYI if you are looking for a great PSU, I recommend the Antec HCP-850 Platinum or anything else well reviewed by jonnyguru.com.

Mine 4 coil whining 780 TI's were coming from the cards. I even put back in my PC Power and Cooling 910 Silencer to be sure. With both PSU's the coil whine was present. I took a piece of paper and rolled it to make sure where the whine was coming from as well.

that dont help, it even dont help a bit. This coil whine nowadays is not only in benchmarks where do u have a lot of fps like 200-300, the coil whine which i have now is in games, where i have under 40 fps. Iplayed ac 4 or tomb raider with max sttings and during the whole time coil whine, fps limter or vsync dont help. I tested allready 6 differnts gtx 780 ti with 3 differnt PSU, and the result is they coil whine all, some a bit more then the others but in the end they coil whine all. A lot of people dont notice that maybe because of loud fans or a silent case or maybe the case is 2 meters away from u. But if u have ur case on ur desktop like me its a pain in da ass

I've had 4 classy's. The latest, two Ti classy's and they both do it using (ax1200i) My cards are under water, the only time I can hear it is when running Heaven Valley with the window off. My second card though..The coil wine is extremely loud, maybe that might be why I'm having issues overclocking..not sure.

Here is an interesting find. I put the stock cooler back on, stuck the card in my girlfriends PC and the card is not as loud albeit still noticeable. I tried switching the power supply and it's still REALLY loud in my personal PC. I am thinking it could just be me due to how loud her CPU fan is but I really think it is quieter.

That's interesting. Even more interesting are the guys that have tried 6 different cards across 3 different PSU's. I'm not saying you didn't, but wouldn't it be a good idea at some point to just start filming that with your cellphone even? I mean complaints on a forum are one thing but if you have documented evidence like that and you post it on Youtube it's much harder for a company to brush it under the rug. Perhaps some of you guys that have been going through them repeatedly should try this out.

Have any of you asked EVGA for a refund? If they refuse contact your credit card company. American Express is baller at standing up for their customers. You paid for a top of the line, flawless GPU. If that isn't what you got they can process a chargeback for you and you can try your luck with another manufacturer. At a certain point if you are sure the company's product is bad you gotta try to get away from that company, right? Just sayin you guys seem much more patient than I would be. :P

I came from two evga 580s with no whine on air or water
as soon as I put in the 780ti and start up any game I can hear it whine slightly. Kinda sucks I just turn up my volume lol.
I have a corsair 1200 wat PSU and I would think that the 580s in sli pull more power. Either way I probably wont RMA, and just live with it.

You guys making it hard to wanna pull the trigger on two of these cards, my Titan had some slight coilwhine when running 3D Mark but that was it, I could live with that but not in games.

Re: 780 Ti Coil Whine? 2014/01/10 02:31:51 (permalink)
I started running  yesterday and that is when I noticed it, a very high pitch whine, it doesn't do it on any other games only Star Trek Online which I don't know why it only does it on that specific game but I hardly play that.

If I turn down the power target to 60% in EVGA Precision X I still get the whine but its so quite that you really have to listen for it and when I have my headphones on there is no way I would be able to hear it. Because it nearly goes away when I turn the Power Target down that is leading me to believe its my PSU, I have a OCZ ZX Series Gold Rated 1250 watt PSU. I upgraded from SLI 560 Ti's the Saturday after Xmas, so I've had the Card for about 2 weeks.

I don't want to go through an RMA and get another card that could possibly have a high coil whine, that's even if it is the card.

my 780 sc acx had no coil whine. and coming from my stock ref 680 that had it REALLY bad. i was in heaven.  i just stepped up my 780 to the Ti and i can say that my Ti has VERY VERY slight coil whine. nothing to complain about. you really have to try to listen for it. as long as it stays like that ill be happy.

as for people complaining about it. yes i agree, if you're paying a lot of money (400 bucks or more) you should get a card that does not have this issue. but at the same time. that is why i AWESOME never buy reference cards. just  for the fact of the stock components that are placed on the card. also go for a classy or something that has high end chokes and mosfets. i hate to say this. i've AWAYS been with evga ever since my first computer i built  with a 7900 GT KO, i may be getting a Direct CU II card next time i buy a card. not just for the cooler, but also for the non ref PCB and components. i don't see many people complaining about coil whine with those cards OR other non ref cards. i know it sucks but the cost difference is usually only 20 bucks or so more and if I'm already paying 500 + bucks out , mind as well spend the extra 20 bucks.

Yeah, I agree. However, non-reference boards always use some cooling setup that is better aimed at open cases and single card setups. In my multi-card, mATX vertical tower (Silverstone FT03), it makes more sense to go with a blower setup.

That being said, my GTX780 Ti is squealing softly. It's annoying, but I hope it will stop doing so sooner or later.

EDIT: wow, I have an annoying sig. I'll get rid of it.

EDIT2: There, that's better.

eVGA FTW!

I used to have Corsiar AX950 with no issues at all while having 2 reference 780tis under 80 degree Metro 2033 , I switch to a 3970x recently so I changed my PSU to AX1200i as well. Now the coil whine appears.  They do come from the graphic cards while gaming. kind of weird.

All,

I figured out how to get rid of coil whine, it has to do with the fan speed of your CPU, just set it to normal in BIOS. It worked for me....

For those that are using an EK block and back plate for their WC setup.  I found the buzzing/whining to be caused by my back plate.....I used the small plastic washers that were for the block installation and placed them under the screws for the back plate.  After a couple RMA's this turned out to be the solution for me.  Guessing something on the EK back plate is just a tiny bit off in manufacturing?  Either way.....it fixed my issue.  Good luck!!
