I'd like to point out that the extra thick heatsink along with redesigned cooling should help keep the temps down. Yes it will take up almost 4 slots so that is the downside.

A large downside but yes...the cooling should be good...one would think..

With all the uncertainty of what NVIDIA was targeting for price, performance, and power draw, I think the AIBs didn't have much choice than to design for the worst case scenario.
Later on, if we see that cooling is better than necessary, maybe we will see some smaller models.

now we know why SLI was killed ... cant fit 2 GPU with the oversized coolers in MB  maybe by the 50 series Nvidia will move lower on Total Watts for this kind of performance

yeah, not a fan of the naming, but in the end, it's the performance I'm after....I just don't want a 3.5 to 4 slot card.

GPU's always seem to get bigger every year. I remember my first card voodoo3 3000 16 MB had just a small heatsink with no fans, then I upgraded to a GeForce 2 Ultra 64 MB that with a bigger heatsink + fan. I remember the GeForce 8800 I had being even bigger cooling solution vs the GeForce 2 Ultra, now the 3090 TI I use even dwarfs the GeForce 8800. Now that AMD has been in striking distance VS the 30 series Nvidia is forced to pull out more stops making GPS's that require more cooling, and RDNA 3 seems like a real threat to Nvidia's performance crown yet again.
I think GPU's will get bigger until competition completely goes away.

What has me going hmm, look at all the PCB's for these new retail 40 series cards, and where the 12pin is connected. It looks like they all said screw it and are using nvidia's PCB this go around then slapping on their own coolers and calling it a day.

I don't have a case that a 4090 will fit in or a power supply I want to run 4 8-pin cables from (I'd only buy one if I had a new power supply I could run a single cable from for one of these behemoths).

I have the asus strix on air and it stays as cool as the evga 3090 ftw was with the hybrid cooler, might even be cooler i'm shocked. and yes this thing is blazing fast games and benchmarks.
