Hi all

Anyone else with the FTW3 getting stupidly high idle temps with no overclock?  Arrived yesterday, running at 60c with zero load. Never drops.  Ramp the fans to 80% and it will drop to 40c after a while. Set back to auto and it goes straight back to 60c.  Running in a Lian-Li o11 Dynamic XL with balanced air profile, 9 fans in total with airflow direct to the card. My old 2080ti OC from Gigabyte idled at 35 in the same case. Fault? Normal? Dried out thermal paste? It shouldn’t arrive like that. Im not getting the boosts I should either. 17500 or so in time spy is bad.

Ryzen 3950x, 64GB 3600, on an MSI Godlike.

Cheers.

What do load temps look like? 85C instantly?

If not, set to the OC VBIOS and reboot - you're in 0 dB mode with the normal VBIOS, and 60C is when the fans kick on. With the OC VBIOS the fan speed is set to a minimum of 33% (and a more aggressive overall fan profile).

Just wondering, is your motherboard PCIe 4 capable?  Mine, on Intel board and Precision X1 not running, seems to idle around 44° C and the fans are not spinning..  Ambient temp is probably a factor in some variances.

Same 60C here. and as soon as I play Red dead 2 the temps go to 75-82C in a few minutes. This card runs really hot and I'm second guessing my purchase.

I have been using my FTW3 3090 for about 12 hours now and my idle temps are between 29c-32c. This is with the bios switch set to OC.
Under load 75c is the highest that I have seen. This is with an +80/+850 overclock. The top power draw on the card is 450w.

My previous card, an EVGA 1080ti SC2, was running way hotter and louder than the 3090.

Thanks all.

So, under load, goes to 73/4c and stays there.  Clocks stay at 1950 and minimum hit 1930.  Not bad, but won't boost above I assume without tweaking.
It is running on PCIe 4 on an MSI Creation.  3 individual rails from the power supply (only 1000w but seems okay).

Ambient temp ranges from 18-21 (as the heating fluctuates).  CPU is sitting between 35/7c right now while replying, maxes at about 64c under 100% load.

I'll try the OC bios thanks.  The fans are constantly stopping and starting.  Can't be great for the motor or bearings.  Like others regretting my purchase a little.  You'd think at this price the experience would be better than an ASUS TUF.

Airflow is good in the case I believe.

What case and airflow setup btw?

Take the side of your case off, if temps improve you know you need more airflow - the slow increase over a few minutes to 82C seems makes me think that. If it were instantly 82C, that would point to bad contact of the heatsink to the GPU die.

Same case with same fans with my 1080ti hybrid I was getting 30-35C idle and 40-45C under load with RDR2. My room temp is 70-73F at all times so I don't think my case cooling is that bad to be honest.

And yes I tried the OC bios and what it does is ramp up the fans sooner so you get slightly better temps at the expense of more fan noise.

My case is a Cooler Master Cosmos C700P.
3 fans for intake and 4 fans for exhaust

I had a 250W 1080 Ti set up with a AiO water cooler that exhausted heat out of the case, so not much of that heat was left in the case. The 3 fan, 450W 3090 FTW3 does not exhaust heat outside of the case - it dumps it all into the case.

Again, I suggest you take the side of your case off and see if temperatures improve. If they do, you need more airflow or a re-arrangement of the fans to optimise airflow to better suit that 450W being dumped into the case.

Edit: also, my 3090 FTW3 runs at 68 to 72C depending on the game and room temperature with the OC VBIOS with more aggressive fans. But it does look like 72C is the temperature target with auto fans, at least that's what I am seeing.

Something is wrong with the card. I run a 3090FTW3 Ultra (OC w/ 500w BIOS *cough* doesn't work *cough*) as well on an X570 w/ a 3900XT in a Lian-Li o11D (non-xl) w/ 3 side intakes, 2 bottom intakes, and 6 top exhausts (push/pull rad) and I idle ~28c w/ a room temp of ~22c, load she hits ~68c. No way in hell the card should be idling at 60c.

Sadly seems like it.  OC BIOS, fans still only go to 10% and flick on and off.  Under load they work, but back at 60c.

That really helped!

I thought I selected wipe all settings on the new driver install.

Testing, thanks.

Just wanted to update my post here, changed my config a bit in my R7 and dropped about 15 degrees C.

Originally I was running:
3x 120mm fans top exhaust
1x 140mm fan rear exhaust
2x 120mm intake fans on the front, mounted to kraken x62 in push config
1x 140mm fan in the basement intake

I changed up the following, everything else the same:
2x 140mm intake in push config to 4x 140mm intake in a push/pull config
1x 120mm in the basement.

This drastically helped reduce my Temps, now I have head room to OC again. People in this thread are correct, these cards need air flow.

Hello there. I have the same problem idle is really hot constantly go to 60°C so fan start spining and stop too much.

I reset nvidia pannel setting it seems to be be less agressive in curve temp but still goes to 60°C and start spining

I must set fan speed to 30% to have a decent idle temp (30/33°C exactly).

My card is one month old so totally new with black plastic accent not the red one from 2020 version.

My configuration :
Corsair Obsidian Series 500D RGB SE With 3 fan front set to minimum speed and one at the back minimum speed too.
Watercooling in pull configuration Silent brown noctua fan.

Proc : I7 6850K (2011-3 socket)
Motherboard : MSI X99A MPOWER
Ram : 32 GB DDR4 corsair
power supply : EVGA Supernova 750 G2

The pci express in my motherboard seems to be Gen 3 (PCIe 3.0 x16). Is it a problem ?
