Hello, Had issues with my PC for quite some time now and I've tried to solve it myself for quite some time without success and it is very problematic as I use it for work. I believe it is related to the GPU I got last year (EVGA 3080 Ti FTW3, also bought a PSU at the same time). I will post full specs at the bottom of this post. The PC simply locks up while doing simple things like browsing a website or similar but so far never while compiling, running games or working in game engines. When it crashes it just freezes up (sound still keeps playing) then it takes a while then sometimes the screen gets a few artifacts then it reboots. I got the GPU in September and it ran fine until Nov or Dec but then I started getting crashes, first once a month, then once every 2 weeks and lately it has happened with a lot more frequency (every 2-4 days) and I've done everything I can to figure out what causes it, tried probably 10-15 different drivers, updated or removed a bunch of different software but since it takes days to see if it crashes it is hard to do that as I usually need the software I run. I've tested undervolting as well to see if the PSU was not strong enough but that seems to not be the case either. Here is output from windbg from a crash dump in case it could somehow be helpful: ******************************************************************************* * * * Bugcheck Analysis * * * *******************************************************************************

Try your card in different, known working good, system to see if card is defective (if problem moves to new system then its the card). If problem doesn't move with the card then it is something about your system. Do DDU (with safe boot) and try again. If problem persists it is not the drivers. Are you using overclocking software, like Precision X1? Remove it. If your system is overclocked there is a possibility your system is unstable, try without overclock and turn off fast boot. Some cards have problem exceeding Nvidia's base speeds and reaching manufacturer's "overclock". Use Nvidia control panel to put driver in "debug mode". If that solves it it is time for RMA. Some system configurations (motherboard/BIOS and/or card) don't handle voltage changes properly. Try with Windows "ultimate performance" power mode and Nvidia drivers in "prefer maximum performance". And then there is always a chance your Windows is foobared. Get different boot disk, install Windows from scratch and see what happens. Good luck!

Hey Kuro1n! Everything that ZoranC have suggested, but also can you remove your memory XMP profile for me and run it for a few days on default? Just as an extra test (yes you could run memtest too, but please try it like this first if you can) Looking forward to updates!

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the replies (the EVGA forum really is awesome). ZoranC Try your card in different, known working good, system to see if card is defective (if problem moves to new system then its the card). Good luck!
Unfortunately I do not have a good system to test it on however my system was running well for 3 years before getting the new GPU & PSU. I used DDU every time I installed new drivers, and I tried most of the major drivers from the release of the card until now. I have MSI afterburner installed for undervolting/downclocking it slightly for temp improvements although I have tested to uninstall it and running stock as well without any changes. Other than that my system is fully stock (except XMP which I will try to disable for a while, just figured that would not be it since it worked fine for several years). Thanks a lot for suggesting the debug mode thing, I will try that for sure! Didn't have a ultimate performance mode for some reason so didn't test it until now but figured out how to add it, will give that a go as well. About windows, yeah I am fearing that as I have a lot of workflow related setups it is a 2 day thing to properly get up to production speed for me again. But I am starting to think I might have to try that too, perhaps I will just buy another SSD to keep my old installation intact in case it is not the reason. Cool GTX What browser are you using that keeps crashing ? ANY OC settings on your PC ?
Tbh it can be a bit of any program, just not any heavy loads yet. I.e. it never crashed while gaming or even when running unreal engine but it crashed while I only had notepad or chrome running (and a bunch of background tasks). XMP profile for memory, rest stock. Epsolike Hey Kuro1n! Everything that ZoranC have suggested, but also can you remove your memory XMP profile for me and run it for a few days on default? Just as an extra test (yes you could run memtest too, but please try it like this first if you can) Looking forward to updates!
Yep will remove XMP right away (and run memtest over night), will keep you guys posted! Thanks once again for the replies guys! I've posted in other communities but never got as much support or as good advice as this. EDIT: Decided to reset bios to defaults.

One other thing to consider, as I've also had some crashing with the later Nvidia drivers on my 3080ti: Roll back to a known-good driver. In my case, it was the latest one in December they released (497?), but for some people, I've seen them using the 472 driver as their last good one. The advice above about doing a clean driver install is still a good idea just to rule out any quirkiness that may have crept in. DDU is a great tool for that, even if you're just going to roll-back drivers. Edit: Just a note, I was getting crash-to-desktop issues with various games, not the same kind of full crash you were getting.

Kuro1n Unfortunately I do not have a good system to test it on …
I can relate to that challenge. Kuro1n … however my system was running well for 3 years before getting the new GPU & PSU.
Answer might be in that but there is always a chance that is a coincidence. Kuro1n I used DDU every time I installed new drivers, and I tried most of the major drivers from the release of the card until now.
In my experience DDU -MUST- be run in safe boot mode while disconnected from ‘net, otherwise there is a chance Windows will get in the way, so if you haven’t done it that way already you should redo it. Also, if your previous card was AMD don’t forget to DDU AMD drivers too. 472.84 drivers were stable for me. I prefer not to install GeForce Experience part. Kuro1n I have MSI afterburner installed for undervolting/downclocking it slightly for temp improvements although I have tested to uninstall it and running stock as well without any changes.
I have no personal experience with uninstalling MSI Afterburner but some programs when you try to uninstall them through regular methods leave remnants behind (or they install more components than they told you, like RGB software, but omit that from uninstall) and require manual cleanup to be completely uninstalled. For example, I had to do that for Precision X1. So you might want to inquire around how to make sure Afterburner and everything else it might have put on is completely gone. FWIW, IMHO I don’t mess with undervolting. It is not worth my effort, stability first, everything else second. Kuro1n Other than that my system is fully stock …
Have you checked are there any updates for your motherboard BIOS? Also, you say it is stock but there is always a chance some default BIOS setting is not working good with the card. Make sure fast boot is OFF. This is frequent culprit of headaches. Kuro1n About windows, yeah I am fearing that as I have a lot of workflow related setups it is a 2 day thing to properly get up to production speed for me again. But I am starting to think I might have to try that too, perhaps I will just buy another SSD to keep my old installation intact in case it is not the reason. I understand your concern, I too am scared of possibility I would have to completely reinstall everything, it would take me many days to do it, so I have separate boot disk for experimenting. I use IcyDock for swappable boot drives. Kuro1n Tbh it can be a bit of any program, just not any heavy loads yet.
BTW, did I mention I recommend OCCT to test stability/integrity of video cards? Give it a try.

Yeah its full on system unresponsive kind of crash. Don't fancy getting another drive to figure this out but would certainly do that rather than reinstall if I those are my options. ZoranC
Kuro1n … however my system was running well for 3 years before getting the new GPU & PSU.

Yeah could be a coincidence, just seems unlikely for a system that has been more or less rock solid until then. ZoranC
Kuro1n I used DDU every time I installed new drivers, and I tried most of the major drivers from the release of the card until now.

I think most times I ran DDU under safe boot, not every time though. Was on a Nvidia card before this as well. I might try those drivers, I usually install experience since I really make use of shadowplay a lot but would consider not using it if it means stability. I remember trying no experience for a while but still had issues. ZoranC
Kuro1n I have MSI afterburner installed for undervolting/downclocking it slightly for temp improvements although I have tested to uninstall it and running stock as well without any changes.

Yeah I don't think it is the undervolt that causes issues as I generally downclocked my card as well. The only real difference is that the card ran 10C cooler but I've ran it stock enough times with crashes that I feel I can rule that out. Not sure if the installation got rid of everything but it seems it shouldn't leave stuff after some quick googling. I will see if I crash after bios reset + nvidia debug mode. Very sad though to run my memory at 2133 CL 15 rather than 3200 CL 14. :/ ZoranC
Kuro1n Other than that my system is fully stock …
Have you checked are there any updates for your motherboard BIOS? Also, you say it is stock but there is always a chance some default BIOS setting is not working good with the card. Make sure fast boot is OFF. This is frequent culprit of headaches.
Yep, everything is fully up to date. Double and triple checked everything. I will take a look at fast boot, I didn't check that out. ZoranC
I don't have that fancy of a setup but yeah, I really rather pay the price for a new SSD rather than reinstall everything to find out if that is the issue. ZoranC
Kuro1n Tbh it can be a bit of any program, just not any heavy loads yet.
BTW, did I mention I recommend OCCT to test stability/integrity of video cards? Give it a try.
I think I gave that a try at some point but maybe I should give it another go.

Hey, guys I wanted to give you an update, pretty sure the issue have been found. I followed the advice above and ran the GPU in debug and with XMP off, everything was fine until last night when my PC simply died and got 3 different BSODs one after another. One of them was "PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA", sounded very much like a memory issue to me. I then tried each stick one after another and found one where the PC wouldn't POST so that was most likely the culprit (seems like it was fine at purchase and during my memory tests (ran memtests for many many hours) but degraded over time until finally dying entirely). I will see if it runs stable with XMP on and half the sticks in for a while and come back if there is further issues but I reckon that was it.
Thank you all for your advice! :)

I'm glad you seem to have found the culprit, hopefully that will be the end of it :) Later, if you have time, I would be curious would that stick pass another round of memory tests. If it does I would report back which memory test you used so we can try to engage developer.

Yeah I certainly hope that is the end. I requested RMA so lets see how that goes. The memory test was memtest86 so it should have found it, or so I thought. Cool GTX bad RAM .. it happen update us once the warranty / replacement RAM arrives ... let us know your experience
Yes, unfortunately it does seem to happen but it was very gradual for me and impossible to really figure out. It's been 4+ months now of various issues. I will let you guys know how it goes though. :)

One from PassMark? If yes when did you run it? Only when you built the system or after the problems started?

Then you would do whole community a favor if you would join PassMark's forums and report that to them / open up the case. Almost everyone depends on their tool to test memory and I hope PassMark would like to investigate why they failed to detect it in your case. Please let us know what they found. BTW, which brand/model of memory is one that failed? You listed timings but nothing else.

TBF, no single memory test is going to catch every issue nor can you expect it to. You really have to go through a suite of them (tm5, karhu, memtestpro, etc.) And even then, they aren't really made to test the CPU as a whole when it comes memory stability. Massive reads, writes, transfers, moves, etc, are only synthetic in nature and do miss large areas of possible instability.

I'm looking forward to hearing what you found, especially because I use G.Skill. I hear G.Skill has good customer service / warranty reputation so if memory proves to be culprit you might want to reach out to them.

I actually went with the retailer I bought it from, if they prove to be unhelpful I would reach out to g skill however. I'll let you know how it all goes.

I have read this entire thread as Kuro1n's problem is EXACTLY the same problem I've been having. I built a new system about 4 yrs ago and it was top end back then. i7-4790k, Gigabyte m/b, 16gb of GSkill ram, 1080 ti Black SC, EVGA 1000 PS, etc. Recently, I decided to update the video card after finding my 1080 ti was starting to show artifacts on the screen. I could literally leave my system up and running for months at a time. It was as solid as any server. After installing the new 3080 ti FTW3 (no other changes whatsoever), I figured everything would continue as before but with better/faster/smoother game video, no more artifacting, etc. Indeed, I got all of those but out of the blue, random crash, freeze. As in Kuro1n's explanation, video would simply go away (black screen), sound would continue for a little bit, then go away, system was totally locked and there was nothing left to do but restart. Pressing the power button would turn off system instantly. Then another press and system would start and operate normally. It could work for days or sometimes just hours. I will run memtest and verify all my RAM as that's about the only thing I haven't done. I'll report back. I wanted to add that nothing is overclocked. Not the CPU, not the RAM, not the GPU. Pure stock on all. Even with the artifacting issue on the 1080 ti, the system never froze or crashed. Very strange that it's reared it's ugly head now after switching video cards. I'll post updates as I find things.

One thing you might want to look at is your power supply. Search YouTube for Gamers Nexus video on power transient issues that have been plaguing owners with new generation of cards for reason why. One way to minimize (but not completely eliminate) chance of transients rearing their head is to put card'd driver in 'prefer maximum performance' mode.

Pretty sure its not the power supply. When I put the 1080 ti in, I also updated the power supply to the EVGA 1000 80 Plus Gold. It's a 1000w PS and has a 10 yr warranty. I can almost assure you it is NOT the power supply. It could be the RAM is weak or has went bad and the stress of the new card causes the issue. I've got a bunch of new RAM here that I'll put in and try that next. I checked the event log and nothing shows up there besides a few related errors to the system shutting down incorrectly (which is to be expected). I'll get it figured out. But its a real pisser to have a perfectly solid system that has been giving no problems for years to have this happen after dropping in a top of the line, 4 digit $$$ video card. I wouldn't be surprised if the 1080 ti thermal paste has dried out and just a quick cleanup and installing some arctic silver might resolve the artifacting problem. If so, I'd put the 1080 ti back in and sell this 3080.

Have you watched the video I pointed you to? If you haven't I would watch it if I were you before dismissing possibility it is a power supply. Many people that had their systems ran fine with older cards experienced exactly same symptoms as you once they switched to 30 series. It didn't mean their PSU was bad, just that it couldn't handle transients new card was throwing at it.

Can you provide a picture of your set up? You are comparing two different generations of cards. The 1080Ti was such a efficiency monster.

ZoranC, yes I've watched the video which further leads me to believe the power supply is not the issue here. Not that it couldn't be, but the EVGA 1000w has more than enough headroom to handle the transient spikes talked about in the video. It could also be my Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3 motherboard but for the most part, its rock solid. I know there can be conflicts between older components and new which are not easily found and can be very subtle. I haven't overclocked anything for a long time now. I used to but everything is plenty fast these days. That being said, I did something you recommended in your earlier post. I put the card in "prefer maximum performance" mode, and so far not a single occurrence of black screen/lockup has happened. I'll continue monitoring. I did want to state that when the black screen/lockup has occurred in the past, the system never shuts off. The power supply keeps the computer going, it's running but totally locked up. It takes a manual press of the power button to shut down. In the video you recommended, it showed the transient spikes shutting down the system completely. That is not an issue here with the 1000w PS. Also, every black screen/lockup has occurred doing simple things like watching some videos on ESPN or Youtube. Not stressing the system in any way... It's a head scratcher for sure, but I'll get it figured out.

Hmmmm … in that case you might be right that it isn’t power supply per se but it still could be transients, just different kind of transients, and it MIGHT NOT be the video card itself, keep reading … CactusCat Also, every black screen/lockup has occurred doing simple things like watching some videos on ESPN or Youtube. Not stressing the system in any way... … That being said, I did something you recommended in your earlier post. When browser is playing videos system might not be stressed out -BUT- few things are being thrown at it. First, browser uses codec that tries to use multiple cores. Next, codec might use AVX2/3 instructions. And once things are handed off to GPU acceleration drivers/card might not handle ramp up from idle to full throttle as they should (for example if card is unstable at “factory overclock” speeds). To find out what is affecting you you will need to check all parts of the chain: First, check your card thoroughly using tools like OCCT and others. Even if that comes back fine consider possibility your card is unstable at speeds over Nvidia reference ones. Put drivers in debug mode and try using your system again. If that resolves it then you have bad card, talk to EVGA. Consider possibility it is your particular browser. I had series of issues with Firefox that weren’t showing up in Edge and vice versa. Consider possibility rest of your system is not as stable as you think it is. I had series of issues similar to yours but only in Firefox. Disabling GPU acceleration in Firefox made it go away, enabling made it return. When comparing system behavior between Edge and Firefox when GPU acceleration is enabled I noticed CPU frequency drops to level that indicates codec’s use of AVX2 instructions shortly before issue happens. My mb’s BIOS default offsets were bit more aggressive than Intel’s default ones and I had them thoroughly tested thinking they are rock stable but I backed them off to Intel’s default ones just in case and issue went away (to knock on the wood). Why they were passing extensive stress tests like P95 and OCCT with flying colors but failing in browser? God knows why exactly (my theory is that regular stress tests focus on just one component at more or less steady state while real life system is going through rapid random transitions involving multiple components that no stress test out there I know of is exercising). So your browser might be exposing weakness/instability in your configuration you aren’t aware of. In any case, EVGA tech has gracefully reached out to you above so if I were you I would give him a chance to help you out. I would love to hear what it was in the end. Hope you sort it out :)

Excellent points all. And indeed, Firefox is my default browser. And as of this post, still no black screen or lockup. Nothing more done than the 'prefer maximum performance' mode in the Nvidia control panel that was mentioned earlier. Since everything is plenty fast already, I went ahead and turned off the gpu acceleration settings in Firefox. I'll monitor and post back soon. And yes, the fact that EVGA tech reached out is awesome. I'll work with them. I've only needed EVGA tech one time in the past and they were amazing. Fixed my problem over the phone with one suggestion. Appreciate all the advice and replies.

Keep in mind that by setting driver to prefer maximum performance -and- turning off GPU acceleration in Firefox you are changing two variables at the same time and one of them might be redundant (if you are turning off GPU acceleration it is kinda pointless to put driver in max mode if rest of apps are stable). If you are familiar with performance monitoring tools you might want to track clocks your card is achieving -WITH- acceleration enabled when preferring maximum performance vs. not preferring it and comparing values when it crashes to see if you could be having card that can't reach EVGA's factory overclock. Almost forgot, two more things I did: I completely uninstalled Firefox, performed manual cleanup, reinstalled latest version, and turned off Win10's game mode. I'm also not running any aftermarket software for video card (like Precision X1). Good luck :)

P.S. You will want to enable GPU acceleration down the road if you can. Codecs benefit greatly from it and visual quality of what you are streaming will in general deteriorate if it isn't on.

One thing to keep in mind, if the "Prefer Maximum Performance" is your only fix, the card now will always be set on the default Boost Clock and will use more power, over a period of time you will notice this on your energy bills too.
