I see plenty of threads and videos on the 3090 but not the 3080. What gives?

It's been really hard to get a hold of one. I'm still not even sure if they were ever sold on the EVGA store, all the ones I've seen people get on reddit were from like one day when Newegg randomly stocked the FTW3 3080s and then instantly exploded.

Strange that there is so many 3090s but basically no 3080s out there given they have been out for longer. I guess it could be because they spent a week redesigning where as the 3090 design was using what they learnt.

Evga basically pulled the 3080FTWs and remaking them with 2 MLCCs, which is why it's delayed. Best to be patient and wait for a stable card than to rush and get a shakey card that you need to throttle just to keep it stable...

The Newegg is the production model, no pre-production (6 cap config) models were shipped out to consumers, as previously stated by Jacob.

They seem to last like half a minute at Newegg when there was a release there last night and this morning.  So yeah.. besides step up, getting lucky, or paying 2, 3, 4, and 5 times the cards list on ebay.. not going to get one.  I suspect that at some point there's a performance tweak with some memory and the card is rebranded something else and sold for more money...  To a point people will pay it.  
 
And step up will likely mean next summer lol.. if its even honored at the price.
