In my personal opinion 1080p gaming with a GTX 1080ti is a waste of your money. A 2k or 4k monitor is what you should go for, or consider waiting for DP 1.3/1.4 monitors to come out.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

32GB Ram is good for making the rig future proof and actually a need to have when running multiple game clients or games / other hvy stuff on the same pc - I tend to run 3+ game clients on some of the MMO's I play.

A pretty good 1440p 165Hz Monitor to get for reasonable low price is the Dell S2417DG, read the below review.

edit: didn't realize can't post links so added the google search hint :)

Personally went with a 4K IPS (Acer H277HK) and very happy with my decision. I don't play FPS competitive, and even regular FPS games (Battlefield, Overwatch, Battlefront, etc), while I notice the difference between 60fps and say 100 fps (having tried my friend's 1080p 144hz monitor), I don't really miss it or NEED it (though it is nice).

I find myself noticing the difference between 2K and 4K much more in games like Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Division, Battlefront, etc. And I'd say a good 60-70% of my games are more rpg/3rd person than FPS. Being able to run around New York in Division or Novigrad in Witcher 3 in beautiful 4k ultra settings is amazing, and the 1080ti gets a steady 50-60fps on both.

My plan is to keep the 1080ti/monitor combo for another 3-4 or 5 years until a 100hz/144hz 4k monitor becomes affordable, we have cables that can carry that bandwidth, and a single gpu solution can drive it.

Yeah... just slight overkill there.  ZOMG I gotta have the best GPU available even though it only takes like 20% of its output power to drive a 1080p monitor!  LOL

Yeah when I said 16GB is plenty for gaming I most definitely wasn't talking about multi-boxing 5 WoW clients.

32GB is something I'll probably do myself at some point down the road... it's not a pressing need though.  It takes all of 5 minutes to install a couple more 8GB sticks once the price drops from ridiculous.

Good plan... I'm thinking the same.  No regrets here either with 4k 60Hz IPS... I'm not a hardcore FPS player.  I'm more into RPG/3rd person games as well.  My Ti shows up tomorrow and I just installed Witcher 3 GOTY edition last night.  I'm looking forward to that one.

I'm loving my 1080 Ti on my 27" 1440p/144hz monitor.

For some of the more demanding games the framerate hovers at 115 with drops to 100ish. I expect new games will bring that down to ~60fps as they get more demanding. I would be disappointed with 4k framerates when they dip below 60fps personally.

My Ti shows up tomorrow and I'm confident I'll be happier than a pig in *#&# with 50-60fps in 4k ultra in the games I've purchased this week for my new build like GTA 5, Witcher 3, BF1 and RE7.

As said I'm not a huge FPSer... just don't have time to try to compete with the CoD kiddies which is cool because resolution is more important than refresh rate to me anyway.

Sounds like you have it figured out :) it's all down to personal preference.

Yeah outside of zombies on XBone the last serious fps multiplayer I've done was Medal of Honor and Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory like 15 years ago...  I'm so far gone now there's no hope of ever competing with the newest generation of all night FPS kiddies...

... which is cool because I'm more of an RPG guy anyway.  Of GTA 5, Witcher 3, BF1 and RE7 the only one I've even played yet is GTA 5.  I sent my 1080 back last week and bought the others this week for when the Ti shows up.  I went with BF1 because I  liked the theme and I am an old school fps player... I'm sure I'll have fun getting owned either way and I'm expecting all the games to be gorgeous in 4k.

I've heard great things about Witcher 3... some have said it's the best looking game environment to date.

I'd say PG27UQ for future proofing. If you need a monitor right now go with a PG279Q.

Wondering if they'll come out with an Ultra Wide version. I've already got burned on their 4k 60hz gsync monitor

To the OP and Demon,

Your best bet for long term performance out of your gpu is 1440p for the time being,  You will get more for your money in terms of performance, and the quality of experience.

You'll be able to run higher settings as new titles come out and challenge your card more and more, a good trade off when going 1440p instead of 4k would be going with a tech like G sync, an IPS panel or even a larger montor size to create a better gaming experience.

4k Is great, I have two panels here, for video and photo editing, and one for casual use as my main tv.  but the 1080ti's performance is at a point where in a year or so  you'll be turning quite more than just a few settings down to keep up to a minimum standard of gaming, wether that be 40, 50, 60 fps to you.

while 1440p will let you use higher settings and maintain this advantage in image quality AND framerate much longer,  looking at all the benchmarks and now having played with a Reference 1080 ti there's not a lot of headroom for future game titles and the demand they'll place for performance.

Played around with sli 1080's last week and the Ti for a few hours last night.  It really seems like we're still a year or so off until 4k performance is at a point where cards will hold their own as new titles come out like we see at 1080 and to a much greater extent, 1440p now.

Any Asus Z270.  Their power delivery and Bio's are hands down the most refined.  Other mfg's have had issues with excessive voltages on auto settings as well, Asus has the least problems when it comes to things like that.  Level1tech's has a great video roundup of Z270 chipset motherboards on their youtube page, it's well worth your time.

nothing wrong with that decision.  Good thing is that pretty soon the next hot GPU will be out and you can probably get another 1080 Ti for a good price.  Now, that in SLI would be good with 4K and high FPS if you wanted it.  If not, one 1080 Ti works as well.  Good problem to have

I also have been looking at upgrading my monitor , but trying to stay on the cheaper side of things.  Would a monitor like "ASUS PB277Q 27" WQHD 2560x1440 75Hz 1ms"  be a decent entry into the higher res monitors without breaking the bank?  Thanks

Its ok based on reviews but only 75 hrtz. Depending on your GPU you may want to go higher. 1080 or 1080 ti go higher hrtz. 1070 or below and you plan on keeping that a while, then its a good choice in my opinion.

I am running a z270 asrock k6 was about 160 and has a nice vrm design but its colors are not for people who dont enjoy red and black theme. the asrock taichi has one of the best vrms out there but is a little more and in a white color theme. asus also has some very nice mobos like others are reccomending

Hello all,

I just ordered the 1080 Ti SC2. I am going to be upgrading my PC a bit as well (will by i7-7700K, 32GB DDR4 RAM, etc), keeping my 1200watt PSU.

My question is, when I upgrade my 1080P monitor, should I go for 2K or 4K? I know the Ti can crush 2K and reviews I have read have stated 4K should be no problem. The problem is 4K monitors are only running at 60HZ until the new ASUS 4K 144HZ monitor comes out Q3 this year (will probably cost an arm and a leg). I prefer great graphics, colors and less motion blurr when playing FPS type games. So I think I would be more inclined to get a 2K monitor. The 1080Ti should be able to crush games for the next 3-5 years at 1440P resolution, going above the 60FPS range.

I worry that the 1080Ti may struggle 2-3 years down the line with 4K at 144+ Hz when games start coming out and demanding more power.

Any thoughts?

TL;DR
2K or 4K for future proofing a system?
(Prefer great colors/graphics over resolution)

So, what's the final word?  What did you decide to go with?

The 1080Ti should be able to crush games for the next 3-5 years at 1440P resolution, going above the 60FPS range.

before buying my monitor I did extensive research and decided with it due to all the great reviews I read and saw on youtube.  It's the Acer Predator XB271HU.  In case you are still deciding

Yeah I'd like to know that too.

I installed my 1080 Ti last night... ran/benchmarked GTA 5, RE7, Witcher 3 and all were getting 55-60 fps in 4k Ultra.

Is it safe to assume that the 1080 Ti will struggle with 4k at 144+ Hz in 3 years?

Ummm.... Probably?

Good thing I live for now and not 3 years from now.  I prefer resolution over refresh rate and gaming at 60Hz in 4k is just gorgeous.

with the latest games at that time, without a doubt.   I have not gone 4K yet since I still like the way 1440P looks at 100 or more FPS.   Some heavy graphics games still get about 75 FPS with the 1080 TI so I am good with that.  Perhaps next year I'll jump to 4K and get an additional 1080 TI to run in SLI.

Much like I am good with 55-60 fps in 4k at 60Hz...  Based on what I ran last night I'm pretty sure the Ti will meet my gaming needs for a while... and when she starts to struggle there's always SLI to consider.  At this point I don't consider SLI a wise investment on my part... or at least not until a better card comes out and the Ti price drops.

The Ti is currently capable of 4k ultra gaming at 60 fps.  I'm happy.

This is exactly they way I would look at it if I was in your position.  in a year, you'll be able to get another 1080 Ti at a good price and run in SLI or get the latest and greatest GPU at that time and sell this one.   Good thing is these GPUs always sell on places like EBAY; always good demand for them.
