Originally... as with most people... I was initially excited about a new graphics card release and almost joined countless others on the hype train to preorder. As time progressed I started actually thinking of a few different things that make this release kind of stand out and make me feel like waiting may actually be worth it here. Hear me out:
Nvidia was originally banking on the fact that there was going to be 'steady' demand for their GPUs so they start producing a ton of 10XX cards and even had said that there were no plans for a new card yet (clearly they could just be lying but read on).
The crypto market crashed and suddenly GPUs weren't in as high of demand as before and now Nvidia realizes that they themselves joined the hype train but are now stuck with countless 10XX GPUs that they need to move out of their inventory (unless they want to get a huge financial hit)
Nvidia realizes that they may be able to kill 2 birds with 1 stone (sort of, sell off new cards while selling a new one to some) so they hastily create/announce 20XX series cards and keep them locked under NDA because in all reality, their main selling points arent even available to anyone yet and while they do have RAW power when gaming, it genuinely cannot justify the pricetag (and they know this) so when the reviews finally come out, a ton of people realize it's freaking bogus (frame per dollar) and that the 10XX series is still more than capable. This leads to a massive influx of 'holdouts' who were going to buy 20XX cards and pushes them back to the 10XX series where they either upgrade to a different 10XX card or they buy a second 10XX card for SLI because 20XX performance is just not worth it at this pricepoint.
Meanwhile, there's still people willing to pay the early adopters fee with the 20XX cards and thus preorder their new product that is being released unfinished but those people will help pay the costs of fabbing this new product/technology (which eventually will lead to cheaper prices after they recoup some of their loss).
tl;dr - Nvidia created the outrageously priced 20XX series to push more people to 10XX series so they could sell their remaining stock and the 20XX series will drop in price after 10XX series cards are sold off.
Secondary thought, Nvidia has had a pretty similar release schedule for a lot of their earlier generation cards:
GTX 780 came out along with a Titan variant. Maybe a year later the GTX 780 Ti came out that hits/tops the Titan performance for less.
GTX 980 came out along with another Titan (X) variant. Again, maybe a year later, the 980 Ti came out that knocks on the Titan's door.
GTX 1080 came out along with yet another Titan (Xp) and again, a GTX 1080 Ti came out that was effectively a Titan Xp but cheaper which led to pissed off customers so Nvidia refreshed the Titan X to make it ever so slightly better.
Now we are here at the RTX series. We know that Titan is no longer a gaming product... so wouldnt it make sense that the RTX 2080 has been released and the current RTX 2080 Ti is actually this generations Titan (seeing as it's even the same price). If this is true, and we were to follow patterns, that means Nvidia would release a "same-generation King" within a year. This would then pretty much be the 2090 Ti or whatever but it would actually be this generations "real Ti" since we technically got the 2080 and the new Titan like every other release in the last 8 years or whatever. This 2090Ti would then be better performance than the 2080Ti, would push the 2080Ti down to the 'normal' Ti price point of around 800 bucks and this new 2090Ti would be 1200 bucks but would undoubtably be the king.
Maybe i'm overthinking things but i feel really underwhelmed by 20XX launch and Im hoping that holding out for the next release is going to be worth it instead of jumping on this bandwagon so early.
