I know it is about time to build a new system, but this computer has been flawless for almost 10 years. I was wondering if anyone is running a 2080 super on a x58 and if there would be any issues.

I'd would assume you'd bottleneck but than again, running on 4K screen as seen in your sig, you might not if that makes sense. lol  In general, older hardware with the new stuff can get finicky.  Somethings they might not get along with so be prepared and don't be surprised if that happens.

X58 are one of the best stable systems I've had experienced and still run one as my backup rig.

That is what i was thinking about, compatibility. Thought maybe someone here had already tried with a EVGA x58 board. I guess the thing to do is get one,  then have an excuse for upgrade if it don't work well with the x58.

    Precisely.

I'd try it on mine but she's in a custom loop so you know how that goes. lol

on a 2560x1080 monitor i was hitting some times 97% cpu usage with 2070 on battlefield 5 ,other games was just fine ,so for my setup for sure with 2080 i would bottleneck.
as said above i dont think that will be your case since you are on 4k monitor.

I'm running a x58 with NO problems using a 2080ti XC Black. Get the 2080 ti over the 2080 super. You will be happier and with the 2080ti Black XC you can OC it to just under a FTW performance.

I am also running BFV (65-90 plus fps using half monitor refresh rate) and MW COD (70-120 plus fps) at all max settings and SofTR at mostly ultra settings with one or two settings just below ultra and getting (65-80 plus fps). 990x chip at 4.14.

Not sure how your case airflow is but the 2080's push out some hot air. The blower type 2080's will push the hot air out the back and seem less powerful than the open 2080's. You may need to keep a side panel off with a high air flow fan strategically placed for best air circulation.

I would also recommend a RAM set of 24GB's as 12 GB's can run low with BFV.

As far as Bottlenecking my CPU can reach 100 percent but does not affect game play. With a 2080 you will have to reduce quality settings to maintain fps but a 2080ti will keep the fps higher and with higher quality settings with the above mentioned fps. I exchanged my initial purchase of a 2080 to a 2080ti and there was no issue with the x58 and much much better game quality/performance.

You will be better off with the 2080ti and if you decide to upgrade system you will have a video card that is still capable two-three years from now.

Thanks for the replies! dc8flyer you have similar cpu clocked about same as mine. Thank you for  the  performance report on your rig. I do keep a side panel off  all the time as my cpu is overclocked on air, so heat is not a concern to me. Glad you reported no issues with your system. Only thing is now I'm not sure which card I want.

    Thanks again to all.

That platform is so old, seems silly to pair a RTX 2000 series GPU with it. If you find your self in the market for a new platform, I would suggest looking into a Ryzen 7 2700X or Ryzen 5 3600, a B450 motherboard and a 2X8GB 3600MHz memory kit. Right now you should be able to get those 3 things for about $300 to catch you up to the most recent stuff.

Reference CPU review to see how they all stack up:

    GET THE ti VERSION!
You will want it when you find out you'll have to reduce settings to run the games. It will also keep you from having to go thru the upgrade process a month or two later.

I also wanted to mention that if you want to increase your CPU performance 30 percent or more then disable the Spectre software installed on your CPU by Microsoft. You can turn it on or off anytime you like and when off you will see a tremendous improvement in game playing. The MS software has a proportionally more severe affect on older chips.
