I need a new quiet PSU for my 1999-era IBM Aptiva desktop PC. The motherboard is designed for a 20 pin connector and as you know, most PSUs have 24 pin connectors.I want to use a modular EVGA PSU because I’ve installed them before and I believe they’re the best.

Quick question - is doing this still supported? One can use a 24 pin connector with a 20 pin motherboard, you just need room for the 4 extra pins to hang off. Sometimes the connector will say 20+4, which I assume the 4 can be disconnected. I’ve seen photos of this.

The Aptiva desktop is running 2 Voodoo2 cards in SLI and the machine runs old titles like M1TP2, Mechwarrior2, and real DOS perfectly so the machine is valuable to me. Any advice on which PSU and connector I should use with this legacy PC would be appreciated.

You can use a 24-pin connector in the 20-pin mobo socket..The extra 4-pin part will hang out over the edge..There are also 24-pin to 20-pin adapters you can use.

    Thanks, Bob.

    I got an EVGA 500 W1, 80+ WHITE 500W, 3 Year Warranty, Power Supply 100-W1-0500-KR

I don’t like the idea that it’s a “budget” PSU but it’s got a real 20 pin ATX connector and real molex connectors that I need. I don’t like using adapters of any kind. The power should be more than enough for the voodoo2 cards.

One reviewer had a video of it being really loud. It’s only forty bucks so if it’s too loud, I guess I can continue the upgrade journey.
