Hi there,

I've bought a GTX 1080 FTW, P/N: 08G-P4-6286-KR, which comes with 2 x 8 pin connectors.
I was wondering if I could use this card just connecting 1 of the 8pin connectors, if I don't want to use the LEDs or OCd the card.
I could try this on my own, but I just wanted to ask in case anyone knew beforehand.
Thanks for the help :)

JL

For proper operation, both plugs must be connected. If either of the plugs are not connected, the card won't work.

If you don't want have the LEDs on the card lit, you may disable them using PrecisionX OC

The card needs all the PCIe supplementary power connectors connected or you will see this when you boot your PC.

It will not work without two 8-PIN PCIe connectors plugged in. Plus, please, use two dedicated cables coming from your PSU. Not one cable which has two 8-pins connected to it.

I would not say that, but to be on the safe side and not cause any issues, even with a premium PSU, it is advisable. Though I ran into that issue by my 1080 Ti KP :x

PS: Dumb me, I just realized now, you are talking about the regular 1080, not 1080 Ti FTW3 :/ Sorry

Wow, ok, many thanks to you all for all the answers and even pictures
I honestly was expecting to be able to not use both, since I'm not going to use the LEDs or OCd the card, but I'll get them both plugged then

I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to use both? does your power supply not have enough?

No, you are correct about using two Separate PCIe Power Cables on this Graphics Card regardless of the Power Supply in use.
You can get away with using One PCIe Power Cable that using only 1 8-Pin and 1 6-Pin Connectors.
But any card that has two 8-Pin Connectors you should always use two separate Power Cables.

it will work just fine, I wouldn't worry all that much if you aren't planning to overclock, and if you do just add the extra 8pin.

It is Not an Extra 8-Pin Connector, the card requires Both 8-Pin Connecters.

Please never talk about things you have no knowledge about in these forums.  That is a great way to have a fellow member destroy their rig and cost them potentially thousands of dollars in damage that will not be covered in warranty.  Unless of course, you're willing to pay for that member's damages out of your own pocket?  No?, then please refrain from such advice in the future.

Another question. My PSU only has 1 8-pin out. And then I have a cable that will convert that two two 8-pins. This seems to be working fine at the moment. Do I need a new PSU?

My new G3 850W Supernova came with 2 X PCI-E(6+2)-PinX2 ( pretty much your 8 pin to psu to two 8 pins for the graphics card)... if your psu came with that cable, it should be fine.  I'm assuming this is the reasoning behind supplying these cables.

Without knowing more about your system setup the split cable should generally be fine. I've used them on numerous cards with multiple psus without problems in 8pin/6pin configuration. 8/8 I don't have experience with but would guess it would be okay as well.

It will not work without two 8-PIN PCIe connectors plugged in. Plus, please, use two dedicated cables coming from your PSU. Not one cable which has two 8-pins connected to it.

This advice is only relevant to low end/low cost power supplies.

    Garbage.

Stop speaking as if you're an actual electrical engineer who builds ATX spec power supplies.

Well, just for giggles are you?  If not, are you making the same mistake you're yelling at him for?

Not for giggles at all,  a properly built unit meeting A.W.G of 18  with 2 8pins on one wire can serve 300w on that wire just fine,  you buy cheap you get cheap however.

There have been some attitudes within this thread so please respect each other when posting even if you feel someone is wrong.

The answer by the EVGA tech in post number 2 is the correct answer. THE GTX 1080 FTW is a higher clocked video card and as a result needs the power of two PCI-E power connectors.

I've noticed that. I'm not exactly the the most cuddly person but I've noticed a lot more salt in threads and without being specific,  it might not  hurt to also remind some of the mods they represent the face of EVGA and not themselves and should conduct themselves with a bit more...erm courtesy. There's some points on both sides. Sure with a top end PSU you're probably fine using one cable with two PCIe plugs on the end. It is better, if you can, to use two separate ones for higher power GPU's. We've all seen this too many times to count, one cable twp PCIe plugs = crashing under load. Two separate cables = no crashing under load. There's no reason to me, to argue using ONE cable with two plugs unless you must. Two is preferred. Seems rather innocuous to cause an argument.

What made you think I was addressing a mod in this thread? I took the opportunity provided by RJ to address my concerns as it was related to his post.  And since I specifically pointed out , that I was not going to ID a specific person, why would you even ask?
There's no reason to create a new argument, right? Please don't even answer (it will just start an argument) and just consider why you should not have even asked.
