Hi. I'm pretty much brand new to overclocking. Just bought a FTW3 1080 Ti I've reinstalled a fresh Windows 10 Pro with latest Nvidia driver, latest EVGA precision xoc and switched to Slave Bios. If I change my power target to max 127 and core clock +50 my PC crashes and reboots. Am I doing something wrong? Seems like everyone does way better then this. Fan speed probably around 80% in the high 60s Celsius sometimes it doesn't crash immediately but then I start running 3dmark and it crashes/reboots my PC Specs: I7-3770k stock that turboboosts to 3.9ghz 16gb DDR3 Z77 Sabertooth Mobo Any help would be much appreciated

What is the card boosting to w/o overclocking? What power supply do you have? Did you try this; Basic troubleshooting steps. Windows clean boot, clean driver install, debug mode, etc.? (Specifically #2) BTW auto-rebooting your PC may or may not be bad, in my experience the NVIDIA driver should just crash and restart. - Grab HWiNFO64, run a benchmark and check the +12V, +5V and +3.3V rails without the OC applied (they need to be within +/- 5%). If you do all those steps and it still crashes please try setting ONLY the power target to 127%. It should not crash, if it does there is a issue.

also what seems to work better for me gaming, if it's clocks you are looking for is voltage slider to 28%, unlink, power target to 130, temp target set to 72 and set it to priority, set your gpu offset to +35 and memory to +200 remember your new card will take time to bed in as it's new, use the primary bios and remember to reboot after you install XOC EDIT: 3dmark/benching will always spit the dummy if you gpu clocks are even a smidgen high, try a lower clock till you find it's stable and then work up +10 at a time till it plays up again as the card beds in you'll be able to increase again. softly softly catchy monkey

Rebooting when going to run graphics extensive apps usually means power supply is not strong enough and crashes machine.

+1 Could also be defective pci-e cables, or a defective video card.

I'll check on everybody's feedback when I get home, but I can say the PSU is a Corsair AX1200 and the only other things in the case are a xonar sound card and one SSD so I should have plenty of power. Games don't crash I only have issues when I OC.

Sounds like the card is the problem if you only reboot when overclocking the card. I'd suggest running the card in another pc to see if it reboots a different machine while overclocking. If another machine runs the card while overclocked without rebooting the pc you'll know it's a psu related issue.

Hwinfo showed +12V, +5V and +3.3V all about at that level after running a non-OCed 3dmark. I have a EVGA GTX 690 that I have never overclocked. Maybe I will put that back in the PC and try to OC and see what happens. It probably eats as much if not more power then the 1080 ti. Before posting this thread I had reformatted my PC with fresh Windows 10, ran DDU becuase of a auto-installed old video driver, running latest video driver and precision XOC. Anybody have any other thoughts or do I need to return the card and get another?

Groto Anybody have any other thoughts or do I need to return the card and get another? Try the card in a different slot / Different PCIe power cables / Stress test your CPU / Different power supply / Reseat every connector & card in the system, including the CPU / Try the card in a completely different PC. The last one would narrow it down immediately.

I disagree. If the PC runs fine at stock GPU speeds for this card then nothing is wrong with the card. You didn't mention which PSU you have installed. What is the model and make please?

The FTW3 is already running at pretty much max. I think the only way you are going to be able to squeeze more out of it is under water. As for it not rebooting when it's running at stock, that makes me think that the card is fine and it just can't handle the manual overclock. When you don't manually overclock the card, does it still boost like crazy? And what are the temps and max boost that it hits? Not every card is guaranteed to be able to be manually overclocked. As baconinabun said, dial back the overclock and start it in steps of 10. Treat this like you would a CPU overclock. You don't just go balls to the walls right away. Babysteps man, babysteps :)

In my case raising core GPU MHz isn't the best way to improve performance (specific to my gpu ftw3). In fact it is only stable up to +26 MHz on the core in XOC. But all is not lost. I have had substantial gain in average frame rates by increasing the Power to 127% temp 89c (only possible on the slave BIOS). Also, I set voltage at +50%. All done with Precision XOC 6.1.13 (latest as of writing). Using the default vBios slave's built in fan curve. So on my card (it will vary from chip to chip) simply adding MHz to the core serves pretty much no purpose in terms of AVERAGE frame rates and graphical power. However the other settings (max power and extra voltage) have real world benefits. I put the core down to +13MHz with little change in average. It's the power and voltage that are important in my case (I OC memory by just 100MHz) So card is very stable with extra performance with those settings. Seems my chip is close to it's max speed (MHz) straight out the box. Not complaining though. Great card, just got a mediocre gpu chip in the silicon lottery. It's in cases like mine that EVGA's excellent engineering of PCB and other components shine - allowing higher power usage with great cooling. Not much can be done about a chips max MHz though, well unless LN2 perhaps, but I've never and never will do that.

Your FTW3 graphics card is already overclocked out of the box, and probably will not benefit much from additional overclocking. Your Intel Core i7 3770k on the other hand, especially since it has an unlocked multiplier, will probably give your system a much greater overall performance boost when overclocked. A lot more than trying to squeeze a few extra Mhz out of your factory-overclocked graphics card will do anyways.

Kingpins are only for users who want to use LN2. They are not for casuals. Serious. Unless you plan on using LN2 with your card do not buy a Kingpin. Past versions have had a heater on it for crying out loud. If you want something to overclock, return the FTW3 and get a Black or something like it. The FTW3 as mentioned, is pretty much already at max clocks.

Yes, I would have thought so. As alluded, I have no problems and good results adjusting max power and a bit of extra voltage, I add no more than 100MHz to vRAM, and the card simply isn't stable if I OC the core itself by more than 26MHz. That's the limit on my chip for core OC. I don't really know for sure, but suppose as long as core clock OCs are nothing or just a few MHz added then seems odd it reboots. Just an idea but perhaps don't OC the core at all. Use the power and voltage settings exclusively. Power up to max and some extra voltage is the only thing that gets me genuine faster average frame rates, and higher AVERAGE core MHz. I always record this stuff with HWInfo 64 and in my case it's clear increasing core does little. Your chip sounds the same, might have to focus on power and voltage and leave core at stock or small OC only?

If Windows error logging and recovery option is set to automatically reboot on error (default setting), then yes, it is perfectly normal for the computer to reboot from time to time when overclocking. If the computer runs fine when the card is not overclocked, there is nothing wrong with the card. ;)

On older video cards & drivers. Sure. On a 10 series card with the latest drivers. Nope. I've pushed my gpu overclocks too far before, and the only thing that happens is the display driver crashes and recovers. I've never had my system automatically reboot itself from a bad gpu overclock.

My computer with an EVGA GTX1080Ti Black, X79 Sabertooth, i7-4930k 4.2ghz, 4x4 Sniper mem 1866, EVGA 850w gold, win10. Was running GPUgrid, primegrid and folding just fine at 1950 or less. Seen others folding over 2000 to 2100, so I bumped mine up to 2035 or so folding. Ran a few frames, temps just under 70c,I went to bed and overnight the computer rebooted about 2 hours later. This system has been rock solid for a long time, GTX660Ti, 980ti, 1080 and now the 1080Ti So yeah an overclock too high can make the computer reboot.

ty_ger07 If Windows error logging and recovery option is set to automatically reboot on error (default setting), then yes, it is perfectly normal for the computer to reboot from time to time when overclocking.
+1 My experience exactly.

cdc-951 Blame Nvidia for locking the voltage down to 1.093 volts... Everyone doesn't want to cause an uproar about this to Nvidia
Adding voltage doesn't do much at all until temps are down around 10c or lower....and even then it's very small gains in performance all the way down to -15c, for sure...and most likely further. I only ever tested to -15c.

Decided to exchange the FTW3 for another to see if I get these random reboots when overclocking. I'll let you all know how it goes.

My exact experience on my X79 Sabertooth as well. If I push my 1080's too far the system will actually reboot. And fixing that overclock is so much fun...
